It’s Bookanista time! Woohoo! My favorite day of the week!

And this week brings all sorts of win with Kody Keplinger’s debut THE DUFF.

I love/hate this author so very VERY much.

Love because this book is what all contemporary YA should be. It’s honest, real, and heartbreaking while still bringing the funny, loving, and caring that all of us strive to write.

And the Hate? Dude–Kody wrote this book at seventeen.

Let me just say that again for full effect. SEVENTEEN 1 – 7 !

It’s the story of a girl whose home life is less than perfect (but not so flawed that it makes her nuts or anything) who finds comfort in a most unfortunate way. And it’s told brilliantly. I caught myself re-reading pages just so I could live in the moment of each emotion a little longer before it was time to move on. Isn’t that what being a teenager is all about, anyway? Jumping from one crazy situation to another, and then wishing you were back dealing with whatever it was that you just ran away from?

  1. It’s unbelievable that Kody wrote this book when she was seventeen, and absolutely fantastic that everyone is loving it so much! I’ll have to get my hands on it soon.

  2. Sounds like a great book. You might also like Evolution, Me and other freaks of nature. I found you off Elana Johnson’s blog. Nice to meet you. Great blog.

  3. I love how you don’t even try to disguise your jealousy.

  4. Maybe we should all have written more at 17. Even if it wouldn’t have been publishable, we’d all be a lot better by now.

Not only did she publish at 17, but she made it into the Goodreads e-newsletter as someone to watch.

And this book is now going to be really high on my to-read list.

  5. I so agree. LOVE! And yeah, if she weren’t such a freaking fabulous writer it would be easy to hate Kody. 17????????????????

  6. I really want to read this book. I’ve followed Kody’s story of publication. It’s pretty amazing!!
