Books That Rock – Hex Hall

For those of you who are new around here, I occasionally review books. And, since I know how much work goes into writing one–I only like to talk about the stories that made me fall in love with them. Who doesn’t love a book that rocks, right?

A couple of weeks ago, my twitter feed was all abuzz with one story. Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins.  Well, I headed out to my local bookstore to pick it up–because everyone told me it was the kind of story I’d fall in love with.

And let me just tell you–they were right.

When you read YA Paranormal stories, you assume that most of the time if it’s a dark subject matter, then it won’t be fun and snarky. But, if I’m going to read an entire novel, then I want to laugh out loud at least three times.

Hex Hall made me laugh on like every other page. Even in the scary parts–now that’s talent.

What’s it about? Reform school for witches, fairies, shapeshifters, and such. How is that not enough to get you to go read it?

Oh, and the author’s pretty cool, too. She tweets too, and when I got her to follow me back, I considered it a personal win. 🙂

  1. They’ve kind of moved me into the middle grade novelist category because my YA books are light and sunny and cheery…apparently YA books aren’t like that anymore. Who knew? I think books like the one you reviewed are refreshing…and you’d think teens would want to read more of that sort of thing but I keep picking up these YA books about cancer and death and pregnancy and such.

  2. Okay…I’ll have to check it out. After the last two I read I need a pick me up. I LOVED Shiver (Maggie Stiefvater) so I bought Lament and Ballad–which she wrote a long time ago. Depressing as hell. Did not enjoy them. The stories were great, until the end~then crash and burn. Just my opinion of course, I still love her writing. I need a book to cheer me up though!

  3. That sounds like an awesome book…right up my alley. Sigh. One more book to add to the list of ones i want to read.

I know I’m supposed to read a lot but I always feel guilty if I’m reading–like I should be working on my own book instead of reading someone else’s. Do you ever go through that, or do you just look at reading other people’s stuff as part of the learning process?

    1. @Callie Forester, you should skip all the other books in your list and just push this one up to the top.

I know what you mean, but sometimes the BEST thing you can do for your story is to back off and read some other really great ones. When you come back, your book will be even better!
