Lime Muddy Buddies are one of my new favorite obsessions! These easy-to-make snacks are great to keep on hand for a tasty treat any time of year, but they simply scream SUMMER IS HERE!

What are Muddy Buddies?

They are simply just Chex cereal which has been coated with a combination of chocolate, powdered sugar, and yummy flavor.

Our Lime Muddy Buddies are little bits of heaven that are tart and sweet with a white-chocolaty crunchy. Basically, it’s like someone said, “Hey, we want to know what women crave.” Voila! These squares of lime goodness appeared.

You put the lime in the Chex Mix and you shake ’em both up, you put the lime in the Chex Mix and you stir it all together! (Admit it. You’re singing it now, aren’t you?)

We are just getting started with the Muddy Buddy goodness! Crave even more Muddy Buddies? Check out our recipe for Bubble Gum Muddy Buddies … your taste buds will thank you.

What You Need To Make Lime Muddy Buddies:

How To Make Key Lime Muddy Buddies:

Pour the Chex into a large bowl, and set them aside.

In a small microwaveable bowl, microwave the white chocolate chips on high for 20 seconds. Now, stir those chips up. They should still be rather firm.

Microwave again for about 45 seconds. When you stir them this time, the chocolate should be more melted. If needed, microwave an additional 15 seconds.

When they are done, the white chocolate should be melted and smooth when stirred.

Pour the melted white chocolate over the Chex cereal, and stir (or fold) it gently together until the Chex cereal is evenly coated.

Pour the contents of the lime jello packet and the powdered sugar into a small bowl. Stir it together until it looks like green powdered sugar.

Pour the Chex cereal mixture and the green powdered sugar mixture into a resealable plastic bag. Shake it up until the cereal is well coated. If you don’t have a plastic bag, simply pour the mixture into a big bowl, and gently stir until evenly coated.

Spread the goodness onto a baking sheet to cool.

I dare you not to dig into it before it’s ready!!

Muddy Buddies Chex Mix Recipe Variations

Pro Tip: To turn these into Key Lime Pie Muddy Buddies, simply blend 4 1/2 cups Chex cereal with 4 1/2 cups Golden Grahams cereal. Follow all other directions as written.

The Golden Grahams will give it a graham-cracker-crust style flavor like you were eating actual key lime pie. You’re welcome!

Grate lime zest on the top for a pop of flavor and color!

Important: Don’t spend more than 1 1/2 minutes stirring the completely melted chocolate. It will harden on you.

You may call them muddy buddies, mud buddies, puppy chow, or even just little-squares-of-flavorful-heaven. Whatever you call them, these sweet key lime bundles of flavor will win over a crowd. Learning how to make them is so easy. Master it, you can do it again and again with many different flavors!

  1. Look forward to trying these! I have a key lime tree. A ripe key lime is yellow, not green. If you see a green key lime pie, the color is not from the lime.

  2. Hi there! I’m seeing everyone’s question about the green color. Instead of putting green food coloring in the melted white chocolate, I just poured KEY LIME JUICE over the top of it all after the cereal has been mixed with the white chocolate and tossed in the powdered sugar. It GREATLY enhances the flavor of it giving it a kick, and it also turned it green! Let me know if you want a picture of it!

  3. Lime jello? As a lover of true key lime, this is a sick joke.

  4. Your opening line cracked me up! We have been binge watching Bones and my 4 year old is obsessed with the ‘Sweets song’ (You put the lime in de coconut, drink it all up!) LOL Sharing your post! 🙂

  5. It would be nice if you’d answer the questions above. Mine were not green either. Did you use food coloring or some other kind of liquid to turn the Jell-O green prior to mixing it?

    1. Hey! So the original recipe called for “Duncan Hines Flavor Creations Key Lime Flavor.” Unfortunately, by the time we got ready to post the recipe (after the images were taken), that product was no longer available. I subbed in the Jello because most of the muddy buddies I’ve made used Jello and and voila! As weird as it sounds, the different color never hit me until I saw y’all talking about it. LOL!

You can absolutely mix a few drops of green food coloring into it to turn it green, but it’s completely up to you!

  6. It turned out fantastic! Crunchy, sweet with a burst of lime!! Sloo good.. I used the recipe with the golden Graham’s. Wasn’t very green but still yummy!!!

  7. Love the taste of these but how did you make them be so green mine were just White

  8. Hi Mary, thanks for the creative twist on a classic! This may be a silly question but how did you get yours to turn green? My jello stayed white.

  9. These were a bit of a disappointment. The melted white chocolate chips are very gooey. Makes it hard to coat the cereal without crushing it. It needs 1/4 c. butter or margarine to allow it to be more smooth and to coat the cereal better. Also, I added two boxes of lime jello instead of one. You couldn’t really taste the lime flavor with just one box.
