Oreo Truffles

Valentine’s Day hasn’t always been my favorite holiday. I remember in high school everyone would receive carnations in class and I’d sit there all grumbly and awkward about the fact that my crush didn’t notice me.

Wish I could say I’ve grown up some since then, but to be honest, even when I have a date for Valentine’s Day, I find myself anxious and nervous and, well, honestly, just wanting to break something. That’s why I love these Oreo Truffles. The very first step? Crush the Oreos. YES! I’m not saying you have to attack these with the same vigor I do, but just know that I’ll never judge if you do. Also, feel free to make these into whatever shapes you wish, wink wink, nudge nudge. Enjoy!

What You Need To Make Oreo Truffles:

How To Make Oreo Truffles:

Crush the entire package of Oreos into a bowl (or blender). This part’s the part that’s the most fun. I like to put them in a Ziplock bag and Hulk-smash them with my fists. Yes, perhaps a bit juvenile, but how often do you actually get to Hulk-smash things in your life? Basically never. Especially once you’ve become an adult. For some reason people frown on it more as an adult. Whatever, people. Still, for these truffles you can smash away every bit of pent-up energy until your heart’s content…and the Oreos are thoroughly pulverized. Also, I would never judge if you chant “HULK SMASH” over and over again whilst you are doing this.

Mix in a softened package of cream cheese. Not quite as fun as the smashing, but still very rewarding. You can either use a spoon and mix or squish it together with your very washed and clean hands. I’m a squisher, myself. It’ll take on the texture of playdough after a while and then you can do all sorts of things with it. I like to make inappropriate shapes, and then squish them away before anyone can see them. It’s like a secret pleasure, you see…

Next, shape the Oreo mixture into balls and place on the wax paper. I should note…the Oreo balls go terrifically with my inappropriate shapes however you should probably refrain from adding the inappropriate shapes to the wax paper if you have kids around. If there are no kids, feel free to make some inappropriately-shaped Oreo truffles just for the heck of it. Why not? You only live once!

Freeze for 10-15 minutes to help the Oreo truffles survive being dumped into the candy melts. If you don’t freeze them, you’re going to end up with lumpy balls…and no one likes lumpy balls.

Melt your first package of candy melts in a microwave safe bowl for about 30-seconds. Stir, then microwave for an additional 30 seconds over and over until the melts are smooth. Make sure to stir well between melting sessions or you’ll end up with burned candy melts that will make your house smell like love has died. No one wants a house that smells like the death of love, so just make sure to stir well.

One at a time, drop Oreo truffles into the candy melts, coat, and then use both forks to remove with ease. Add to wax paper and top with sprinkles immediately. You can do this more than one at a time if you want, but it’ll get messy and it’s just easier to take your time. Because the Oreos were in the freezer, you may need to soften your candy melts at some point as you go, but if you work quickly you might just make it all the way to the end without having to remelt them. Plus, if you try to remelt them there might be bits of Oreo ball at the bottom and again…death of love. So really, do your best to work as fast as possible.

Allow candy melts to harden and serve. These are best on the day you’ve made them, but they can be stored in an air-tight container for about a week if you must. Perhaps just don’t store any inappropriate shapes if you’ve got kids. Or in-laws. Or anyone else who might be snooping through your cabinets.
