It’s safe to say that snapchat isn’t going anywhere. What was once an app that we demanded our children not download to their phones has become a fun, easy place to share pictures and videos about what’s going on in your life every day.

As a mom, understanding Snapchat isn’t JUST about knowing how to use the app. It’s also about knowing the ins and outs of the social media platform that is the very most popular with teens today. If we aren’t snapchat friends you can just click here to follow me right now.

Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Snapchat:

The thing about snapchat is that there isn’t really a user manual. It’s one of those things where you just sort of download the app and then play until you figure it out. Which, if you’re anything like me– that means you are totally screwed.

When you open the Snapchat App, the camera is like normal– facing away from you. But you can touch the little button in the top right hand corner to turn it around into selfie mode.

You can also use the flash. Just hit the little flash button and it will toggle both front facing and back facing flash on and off.

Click the little ghost to add new friends. It will bring up your snapcode (which you can take a picture of and send to your friends so they can add you easily) and you can add your friends here, too.

Snapchat isn’t just messaging one on one with friends. You can actually share snaps to your story that anyone following you can see. It’s almost like a Facebook timeline, but it disappears after 24 hours. And that’s pretty much the best part, because there is no pressure to take perfect pictures and curate a beautiful timeline. It’s just real, in the moment fun.

Filters are pretty much the coolest thing ever. Make sure you turn on automatic app updates on your phone so that you will get new snapchat filters when they pop up. There are always new ones popping up, and trying out new face filters is the best part of Snapchat. But, if you want to enable them, you have to do something special.

You can replay one message once a day. Which is good news if you are like me and you get distracted easily. I always start playing a video, and then miss it completely! So, if you get a video that you just can’t get enough of, then hit that REPLAY button. You get one a day!parents guide to snapchat

You can download your chats, and screenshot them too. Just click the little arrow button to download your snaps, and they will save right onto your phone. But beware that if you save or screenshot other people’s snaps they WILL get a notice that you did.

You can watch the stories of your kids, and your kid’s friends, too! So, this is my super-not-so-secret way of checking up on my daughter and all her friends. They all LOVE to send me their silly snaps, and that means I get to see what they are up to and who they are hanging out with.
