There are so many things I LOVE about the Holiday season, but it is definitely a tradition of mine to watch all the Holiday movies I can get my hands on.

This starts EARLY, with The Nightmare Before Christmas at Halloween, but goes into full swing during the Thanksgiving holiday.

You may not even be aware that there are Thanksgiving movies that are on the “must watch” list year after year, but I’m here to help!!

Here are 12 GREAT films you do NOT want to miss this Thansgiving season.

Dutch

This is one of my FAVORITE Thanksgiving films. It is a John Hughes film, so you know it’s going to be good! Dutch is about A priveledged pre-teen who is being brought home to his Mother’s house for Thanksgiving dinner. He doesn’t exactly want to participate willingly in his removal from boarding school for the trip to Mom’s.

You can purchase Dutch on Amazon, or you can watch for it to appear on TV sometime during the holiday season. It is kind of hard to find, but WELL worth it!

Pieces of April

This film, which stars Katie Holmes, is about a young woman who invites her dysfunctional family over for Thanksgiving dinner. She doesn’t at all know how to create or host a Thanksgiving meal, and that doesn’t make the family dynamic any better.

You can both rent and purchase Pieces of April from Amazon.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

This is, perhaps, the most iconic Thanksgiving film of all times. If you haven’t seen Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, you HAVE to watch it this year. It is another John Hughes film, and it is about two men who are just trying to get home for Thanksgiving. As you can imagine, nothing goes as planned.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is available to rent and purchase on Amazon.

Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

There are several versions of this film, but take my word for it, the ORIGINAL is the best! This film opens on Thanksgiving Day, as they are preparing for and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Miracle on 34th Street will have you whole-heartedly believing in Santa by the end of the movie.

You can both rent and purchase Miracle on 34th Street on Amazon.

Free Birds

This feel-good animated family film is about a group of turkeys who want to be spared this Thanksgiving. They have one goal — to time travel to the very first Thanksgiving, and change the tradition of eating the Thanksgiving turkey. You will LOVE watching this film with your family!

Home For the Holidays

In this film, Thanksgiving doesn’t exactly go as planned — I mean, does it ever? Claudia has just been fired from her job, and that is only the beginning of her Thanksgiving downward spiral. Can she gain a new outlook despite all her bad luck?

Paul Blart Mall Cop

I mean, TECHNICALLY this is a Black Friday movie, but I love to watch it every Thanksgiving season. When a group of theives tries to take down a mall during Black Friday, can Paul Blart save the day?

The Oath

This is not your traditional Thanksgiving movie. The Oath is a thriller / comedy about a future world where everyone must take a loyalty pledge during Black Friday. This causes problems, especially with one family during Thanksigiving dinner.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

Do I really need to say anything about this? Snoopy and the gang are back to celebrate the Thanksgiving feast, and you don’t want to miss it!

There is oh-so-much more to this film than the Thanksgiving meal, but you will get all the feels when you watch Michael Oher partake in Thanksgiving dinner with the Tuohys.

You’ve Got Mail

I mean, come on!! Who doesn’t love this movie?!? Yes, there are Thanksgiving feels in this film. Remeber when Joe steps in for a frazzled Kelly when she accidentally goes through the cashless line to pay for her groceries for Thanksgiving?

Son-In-Law

Hey bud-dy, you can’t miss this classic 90s flick this Thanksgiving! In this film, a college dorm RA visits one of his attendees houses for the holiday. It is hilarious, and if you haven’t seen this movie, go watch it!!
