Did Will Smith’s Character in ‘I Am Legend’ Die?
A sequel to I Am Legend starring Will Smith was just announced and it has fans everywhere talking about it…
Reports confirm that Will Smith is set to star in a sequel to I Am Legend.
In addition, Michael B. Jordan will be starring in the movie, which will be written by the original film’s co-writer Akiva Goldsman for Warner Bros.
Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan both posted the announcement on Instagram with a single image and no caption:
While the announcement of the sequel has fans excited being that an idea for a sequel has been thrown around for years, fans everywhere have one major question: Did Will Smith’s character die? If so, how exactly are they going to portray him in a sequel?
Did Will Smith’s Character in ‘I Am Legend’ Die?
In I Am Legend, Will Smith plays virologist Dr. Robert Neville heroically saves two immune teens, Anna and Ethan after sacrificing himself with a grenade.
At the end of the movie, Dr. Robert Neville is in the process of creating a cure to the Darkseeker mutation, which makes all the infected vampiric but vulnerable to sunlight. When a hoard of Darkseekers track Robert, Anna, and Ethan to Robert’s basement lab, he gives a sample of the cure to Anna and Ethan and then sacrifices himself.
So did he die? It seems so.
However, a general rule of thumb is: If you don’t actually see someone die, there is a huge possibility they didn’t and they are alive. Although, I am unsure how they could get around a grenade not killing him.
I Am Legend Alternate Ending
In 2008, a two-disc special edition of I Am Legend on DVD gave an alternate version of I Am Legend‘s ending.
In the alternate ending, Dr. Robert Neville returns the Darkseeker he had been experimenting on to the attackers, who leave. Then, he reflects upon his experiments, realizing he’s become a monster himself in the eyes of the infected and abandons the cure to travel with Anna and Ethan to the survivors’ camp.
With that alternate ending in mind, there is a possibility the sequel will pick up from there.
