So I googled, “How to Make a Cheer Bucket” and came up with about two hits.

Craap. That meant I was on my own. Turns out, though– they’re not all that difficult. You just hit the after homecoming sales, pick up some cute dangly football stuff and some cute cheerleader stickers– grab some fuzzy boa material and some of that cute colored/patterned duct tape, and you’re good to go.

First things first– you need a bucket. You can find these at wal-mart and I went with green because– hey that’s the team color– why not?

Then take some of that duct tape and tale around the bottom. It’s harder than it looks, because the bucket isn’t straight– now take your boa, wrap it around the top, and tie some super cute football mum things to it.

For the top, we just used a bandana and a piece of round foam, my husband drilled holes in the bucket lid and tied the bandana together underneath the lid.

As for the handle– that’s just tulle, various ribbons, and christmas tinsel tied in knots.

Pretty easy if you ask me!

  2. maybe this is a stupid question, but do the lids on these close or just sit on top?

  3. I’m having a little trouble picturing exactly how you did the lid. Can you give more detail? Why did you need holes drilled in the top?

  4. Our cheer group have been using this idea for a while but they are around toddler age, so they have a hard time opening the lid…. does anyone have any ideas?

  8. Hi… I live in Texas where football and cheer leading are BIG! My daughter’s cheer for our hometown youth football association. It is a “requirement” to have a cheer bucket for each girl.
I thought it was ridiculous at first but have grown to love them. They store their pom poms, water bottle, sunscreen and after the game uniform and shoes all in one place. Also, our squad is ages K-5 so the little ones get tired. They sit on them in between cheers and during time outs, injuries, etc.
You can also buy a bar stool cushion to avoid having to make one yourself.

  9. I can agree with the recent commenter. I can’t imagine myself bringing a bucket for cheering. but I like how the bucket looks and it has a great potential for decorative purpose in special occasions.

  10. Most cheerleaders use cheer buckets to carry their poms and megaphones in them. It also can be used as a seat for when the little cheerleaders need to sit for a minute. I am a cheer coach and we talked about making some buckets for our girls this season, but didn’t. After seeing how easy it can be we will definitely be making some next season!

    1. @Kayla,

hey my niece is 6 years old and got on the comp team in her area!! would it be worth making her one! I like the idea for her to sit and put her pom poms! I was in cheer grade 9 but it was just for fun with the school and football games!

  11. I haven’t used a bucket as a cheer leading tool before. But I like the way you made the bucket look. With a little change in the design’s theme, I think it would be a great decor for the holidays.

  12. so, what x-actly does one do with a cheer bucket? I like it- I like it a lot. I can think of lots of fun uses as gifts to “cheer” someone up – but obviously, you meant the “cheerleading” kind of cheer. anxiously, awaiting your response. 🙂 It really does look fabulous! btw- I’m a new follower- you started following me on Twitter & so I’m checkin you out – Thanks!!!
