I think, yes some are so over the top, and clearly show a lot has been put into making these things. I have never heard of this before now. However, this is my sons first year playing football, and to be honest, I would love to “steal” this idea and make it a Great Falls, SC “Red-Devils” tradition as well! I think it would be fun, and being a thrifty, DIY mom myself, I can think of many ways to create those inexpensively, while actually making a fortune for the team!! I may just present the idea to the board; who knows! LOL! Thanks for the article!

Hi Laurie, thanks for stopping by! According to this youtube documentary mum tradition began at Baylor as a fundraiser. By the 1980’s it had shifted from a college tradition, primarily to a high school one. Love the Emily Gilmore, DAR reference. Classy and understated is more my style as well. You’re probably right, all cultures have their own traditions but some are definitely more over the top than other’s. 🙂

Are you sure it started there or was it near there? It reminds me of the quinciero celebrations, so perhaps it’s crossed cultural lines. Doesn’t every culture has over the top celebrations? Extravagance is often equated with happiness which, we all know, money can’t buy but, it can show others we can design great mums! Personally, I’m more the Emily Gilmore,DAR,northeastern type, and prefer a yellow flower mum with a bow in school colors!
