Hollywood couple, Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara (can we call them Phooey??), welcomed a new baby boy last month, and they named it after Phoenix’s late brother, River.
This news hits me right in the feels. River Phoenix was / is one of my favorite actors EVER, and his death marked the first death that hit close to home for me.
I’ll never forget the day I found out that River Phoenix had passed away of a drug overdose, outside the Viper Room in West Hollywood, California — in fact, I visited the spot of his death, to pay my respects, in later years.
Joaquin’s call to 9-1-1 at the time if River’s passing, which news outlets repeatedly played over and over in the days following the death, will haunt me forever.
It was quite obvious that Joaquin and River were close, and it was very apparent that the events leading up to the death of his brother, and the death itself, had a heavy impact on Joaquin at the time.
I have often thought that the situation has clouded over who Joaquin has become as an actor to this day.
It is crazy sweet that Joaquin and Rooney would pay such a touching tribute to River, in such an intimate way.
Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara met when on the set of the movie Her, in which they both had acting roles. They have since been in three more movies together: Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, Dominion, and Mary Magdalene.
Little River has some mighty talented parents, as they have both been nominated for multiple Academy Awards, with Joaquin winning the Best Actor Award for his portrayal of the Joker, in the movie of the same name.
The news of River’s birth was spilled by Victor Kossakovsky, the director whom Joaquin partnered with on the documentary, Gunda.
He just got a baby by the way. A beautiful son called River.Victor Kossakovsky at the Zurich Film Festival
Congratulations to the happy parents and their baby boy!
