Watch The Magical Moment When A Prima Ballerina With Alzheimer’s Remembers Her Swan Lake Routine
Have you come across the video of the prima ballerina with Alzheimer’s yet? It’s absolutely amazing and struck a huge chord with me.
Marta C. González is a former prima ballerina with the New York City Ballet. Sadly, she spent her final years living with Alzheimer’s.
Last year there was a video made of her listing to Tchaikovsky’s ‘Swan Lake’ and you can see the moment her memory is triggered. It absolutely gave me chills!
I remember after my dad had his traumatic brain bleed that caused irreversible damage, most times he had no idea who we were. But my mom could play music that my dad had loved and it would turn something on inside of him.
The relation between music and the brain is an amazing thing. Even for people that don’t have issues with memory, you know a song will come on, and instantly you are transported deep into a memory from your past.
Marta was a Spanish ballerina and confined to a wheelchair as her brain was attacked by Alzheimer’s. But once the music came on, memories were unlocked and you can witness this beautiful moment in the video below.
She is listening through headphones and you can see the sadness on her face as something connects.
The magical moment
A moment later her hands and arms starting moving, she is actually reenacting her dance moves from her performance in the ’60s! It’s stunning and just a moment you really need to watch.
Sadly, Marta has passed away since this video was made. But what a gift she gave us in showing the power of music and what it can do for people.
In the video below they also included clips of her dancing in Swan Lake with the video from last year of her listening to it. Grab a tissue before watching. You can also see more of what Música Para Despertar does.
