Stop what you’re doing and take a look at your desk. Is it messy? If so, don’t clean it because Science Says A Messy Desk Is A Sign of Intelligence so leave it messy and prove your a dang genius!

According to a research study conduced by the University of Minnesota and published in Psychological Science, reviewed the affects students had on creativity in relation to the state of their desk.

Working at a clean and prim desk may promote healthy eating, generosity, and conventionality, according to new research. But, the research also shows that a messy desk may confer its own benefits, promoting creative thinking and stimulating new ideas.

The study looked at those with messy desks and those with clean desks, asked them to complete tasks such as coming with a new use for pingpong balls.

What they found was that:

Overall, participants in the messy room generated the same number of ideas for new uses as their clean-room counterparts. But their ideas were rated as more interesting and creative when evaluated by impartial judges.

“Being in a messy room led to something that firms, industries, and societies want more of: Creativity,” says Vohs.

“Disorderly environments seem to inspire breaking free of tradition, which can produce fresh insights,” Vohs concludes. “Orderly environments, in contrast, encourage convention and playing it safe.”

So, messy desks can give you creative insight and is a sign of intelligence.

Clean desks are more of a way to play it safe and keep ideas conventional.

Although, neither is the right or wrong way to keep your desk, I’ll stick to having my desk messy since I can now use the excuse of it’s just me being “creative”. HA.
