But there are real, small money moves — switching banks, rerouting subscriptions, buying local on purpose — that actually redirect cash away from systems you hate and toward ones you don’t. None of them require a manifesto. Just a few deliberate choices.

Okay, so I am not here to tell you to delete your Amazon app. You won't. I won't. Let's be honest with each other.

But there's this thing that happens when the news gets bad and the corporations get louder and you feel like your wallet is just… feeding the beast. That feeling is not wrong. It's actually correct. Money is the only language these systems speak fluently.

The good news is you don't have to blow up your life to push back a little. Small, boring, unglamorous redirections of your actual dollars do more than a well-worded tweet. Here's what I'd actually try.

Is switching banks actually worth the hassle?

Yes — and it's the single highest-impact thing on this list. Big national banks pump billions into fossil fuels, private prisons, and weapons manufacturing every year. Your checking account is not neutral.

Credit unions are member-owned, which means the profits go back to you — lower fees, better loan rates, and zero board of directors trying to impress shareholders. Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) do the same thing but specifically reinvest in underserved communities. The FDIC's BankFind tool can help you locate insured local options.

Is it annoying to switch? A little. You'll have to reroute direct deposit and update a few autopays. Takes an afternoon. Worth it.

What does “buying local” actually redirect?

For every dollar you spend at a locally owned business, roughly 67 cents stays in the local economy, compared to about 43 cents at a chain — according to research compiled by the American Independent Business Alliance. That gap is not nothing.

This doesn't mean you have to buy everything at a farmers market in a linen tote. It means when you have a choice between the local hardware store and the big box, you pick the hardware store on purpose. Deliberately. Even if it costs two dollars more.

That two dollars is doing something the other two dollars was not doing.

Should you actually cancel your Walmart+ or Prime membership?

Maybe not cancel — but audit. The question isn't whether to quit cold turkey. It's whether your subscription dollars are the default or a real choice.

Prime, Walmart+, and similar memberships are specifically designed to make them your first instinct for every purchase. That's the whole business model. Breaking that reflex is the actual resistance — even if you keep the membership.

Try a 30-day rule: every time you'd default to a Prime order, pause and check if a local shop or smaller online retailer carries it. You'll be surprised how often they do, sometimes at the same price.

What about where you invest, if you invest at all?

This one feels inaccessible but it's not anymore. If you have any retirement account — even a small one — you likely have the option to choose ESG funds (Environmental, Social, and Governance). They're not perfect, and I'll be honest: some of them are greenwashing in a blazer. But they still generally exclude the most egregious stuff — weapons manufacturers, certain fossil fuel companies, private prison operators.

Log into your 401k or IRA and just look at your fund options. You don't have to move everything. Moving some of it matters.

And if you're not investing at all because it feels like a rich person thing — it isn't anymore. Fractional shares and no-minimum index funds exist. Money isn't as real as they want you to think it is, but it is real enough that where it sits at night matters.

Does paying in cash do anything anymore?

Actually, yes — and for a reason most people don't think about. Every time you swipe a card, the merchant pays a processing fee to Visa or Mastercard. Small businesses eat that cost hardest. Paying cash at a small business isn't nostalgic, it's giving them slightly more of the money you meant to give them.

It's also a weird psychological reset. Cash feels real in a way that tapping your phone doesn't. Spending it more deliberately is a side effect, not a lecture.

What’s the deal with subscription auditing?

Subscription creep is the financial version of a slow leak — you don't notice it until the ceiling is wet. The average person underestimates their monthly subscriptions by about $133, per a 2022 C+R Research study.

Auditing them isn't just about saving money. It's about noticing which ones you actually value and which ones are just… there. Spotify for a service that keeps cutting artist royalties? iCloud for a company that lobbied against right-to-repair for years? You get to decide what you actually want to fund.

Cut the ones that feel bad. Keep the ones that feel worth it. That's it. No spreadsheet required.

poll

Which financial resistance move are you actually going to try?

Switching to a credit unionAuditing my subscriptions like an adultBuying local on purpose (even when it costs more)Tipping in cash from now onLooking at my 401k fund options for the first timeNone of them, I am tired
pick your answer — no counts saved, just for fun

Is there a low-effort way to support workers directly?

Tip in cash when you can. I know it sounds small. It's not. Cash tips don't get skimmed by apps, don't get pooled through systems that take a cut, and don't get counted into wage calculations the way some digital tips do.

Also: if a small business has a direct website and a presence on Etsy or Amazon Handmade, buy from their website. They lose anywhere from 6–20% to the platform when you go through the marketplace. Google them first. Takes ten seconds.

Do boycotts even work?

Sometimes, and more often than people think — but only when they're sustained and specific. A one-day boycott of a major corporation is a rounding error to them. A sustained rerouting of your regular spending to a competitor or local alternative is a different thing.

The most honest answer is: a boycott works best when you replace the spending rather than just stopping it. If you stop buying from Company X and just buy less of that category overall, the signal is muddy. If you visibly shift to Company Y or a local equivalent and tell people why, that's louder.

But what do I know? I'm just someone who thinks money is a construct we probably didn't think through all the way — and yet here we all are, spending it anyway.

None of this is revolution. I want to be clear about that — I'm not standing on a chair about it.

But revolution isn't actually the bar we need to clear on a Tuesday afternoon. The bar is: did your money do something today that you'd be okay with? Did it land somewhere that felt at least directionally right?

That's enough. That's actually something.
