Lunch shaming is when a school publicly humiliates or denies a full meal to a child with a negative lunch account — sometimes throwing hot food in the trash right in front of them. It’s widespread, well-documented, and several states have passed laws against it. Federal universal free meals expired in 2022. Kids are still getting cold cheese sandwiches instead.

So I was reading something the other day and it sent me into a full spiral, and I’m not even slightly embarrassed about it.

There are kids — right now, today — being handed a cold cheese sandwich and told to sit down because their lunch account is negative. Hot food gets pulled off their tray mid-line. In front of everyone. While the other kids watch.

We are not talking about this nearly enough.

What is lunch shaming, exactly?

Lunch shaming is what happens when a school’s negative balance policy results in a child being publicly humiliated or denied a full meal. It’s not a fringe thing — the USDA has acknowledged it as a widespread problem, and as of 2023, at least nine states have passed laws restricting or banning the practice entirely. But that still leaves a lot of states doing whatever they want.

The way it plays out varies by district. Some schools stamp a kid’s hand. Some hand them a cold substitute tray. Some — and this one genuinely keeps me up at night — throw the hot food in the trash right in front of the child rather than let them eat it.

Throw it in the trash. In front of the kid. Because paperwork.

Why isn’t lunch shaming a bigger conversation?

Honest answer — because it’s a lunch policy, not a headline. It doesn’t have the drama of a book ban, so it doesn’t trend. But the long-term damage of food insecurity in kids is incredibly well-documented. The American Academy of Pediatrics links childhood food insecurity directly to lower academic performance, higher anxiety rates, and behavioral issues.

This isn’t about being hungry for one afternoon. It’s about a kid sitting in class after being publicly told their family doesn’t have it together — and then being expected to focus on long division.

And before someone says “parents should just put money in the account” — yes, some should. But some can’t. And some don’t know how. And some have complicated situations where the account was supposed to be set up by someone who didn’t do it. Life is messy, and we’re taking it out on six-year-olds.

What’s the actual argument from the other side?

Here’s the real argument from districts, and it’s not crazy — cafeterias run on tight margins. School nutrition programs are federally funded but not infinitely funded, and when accounts go unpaid, the program runs a deficit. Someone has to absorb that cost. It makes sense because schools genuinely aren’t trying to be villains — they’re trying to keep the cafeteria operational.

That’s a fair structural problem. I’ll give them that.

But the solution to a funding gap cannot be “publicly withhold food from a child.” That is not an acceptable answer. The problem is systemic and it needs a systemic fix — not a policy that hands that burden to a kid holding a tray.

What are states actually doing about this right now?

A few are doing real things. California passed legislation in 2021 banning lunch shaming and later moved toward universal free school meals statewide. New Mexico passed universal free lunch in 2023 — every student, no application required. Colorado and Maine have followed with similar programs.

The School Meals for All coalition has been pushing for a permanent federal solution since COVID-era universal free meals expired in 2022. And that expiration is its own thing worth being furious about — during the pandemic, every kid got free lunch. Cafeterias didn’t collapse. Kids ate. Test scores didn’t crater because of it. Then it ended, and we went right back to stamping hands.

What can anyone actually do about this right now?

More than you’d think. Start local — most school board meetings are open to the public and genuinely under-attended. Find out what your district’s current negative balance policy is. Ask in writing. That question alone makes administrators nervous in the best possible way.

You can donate directly to your school’s lunch fund — most districts have a mechanism for this — or look into organizations working at scale. No Kid Hungry works specifically in this space and has a school meals program worth checking out.

The thing about this issue I can’t shake — it’s fixable. This isn’t some impossible social problem without a solution. We know how to feed children. We have food. We have kitchens. We have cafeteria workers who, by the way, hate enforcing these policies and have said so publicly more than once.

What we don’t have is the political will to say “no kid goes hungry at school, period, full stop, non-negotiable” — and then fund it accordingly.

Until that changes, at least know what’s happening. Because the kid sitting with the cold cheese sandwich definitely knows.

If you want to do something today — look up your district’s negative balance policy. Right now. It takes three minutes and the answer might genuinely surprise you.

And if you’re in a state without protections yet, your school board is a really good place to start making noise. They meet in public. They’re supposed to listen. Make them.

If my son asks for ONE MORE extra meal, or my daughter proclaims AGAIN in that piercing, whiny voice, “I’m bored,” I’m going to lose a little more than just my mind! They are going stir-crazy, and making me bananas.

Hopefully the kids will get so engrossed in these activities, they will calm it for half a minute so I don’t lose it. Hopefully you will find some use in them, too!

9 Boredom Busters To Keep Kids Busy, And Keep Mommy Sane

1. Obstacle Course

This doesn’t take long to set up, and you can use things you have around the house to get it ready. It can be done indoors if the weather is bad, but preferably the kids would get sunshine and fresh air by doing this in a safe location outside. Use chairs, hula hoops, step ladders, jump ropes, and maybe cans to run around. Really, the ideas are limitless. A quick Google search can give you some good ideas if you have lost your sanity enough at this point to be creative.

2. Mini Regatta

WARNING: this could get messy. You can set this up indoors in a bathtub, or outdoors in a kiddie pool. All you need to do is fill either large container with about 4 – 6 inches of water. Then let your kids’ imaginations go wild building boats. Supply them with things like aluminum foil, paper, pipe cleaners, crayons, glue, or whatever you might have on hand. Let them race their “boats” in the water when they’re done creating.

3. Talent Show

Tell each child they have an hour (or however long you want) to practice their talent. Then make a big deal about this “show.” You can even hand out prizes if you want. Cookies or a sweet treat are often a fun rewards.

4. Sidewalk Chalk

You can get this cheap at most any big store. My kids love to make hopscotch games on the cement with the chalk. They also like to split up the cement walkway into squares and draw a different scene in each square. Sometimes they trace each other on the driveway with the chalk, and then fill in all their features, including clothes, with the chalk.

5. Scavenger Hunt

This can be done inside, outside, or a combination of the two. Put items on the list that are age appropriate. If the child can’t read, you can draw an item on paper. Or, if you are like me, with NO artistic talent, you can cut pictures out of magazines , and glue the pictures to paper. You can be straightforward: a flower, a rock, a red pencil, etc. You can also make it a little harder: find something fuzzy, something rough, something purple, etc. My kids love this, and I often have to make several versions for them.

6. Wash a car

This may seem like manual labor, but it can be fun! Get the kids in their bathing suits, use a garden hose or bucket of water, give them each a soft sponge, and let them have at it. Keep in mind, it won’t be perfect. The goal isn’t a perfectly clean car, it’s occupied and happy children. You can even make a game of it. See who can wash all the windows on their side first, or see who can wash thier whole side first. Use your imagination here. The kids will love it!

7. Relay Races

This is pretty self explanatory. Have the kids start at one point and race a distance to another point. Make it fun though. Have them do things like run backwards. Maybe you can have them run, touch a tree, run around the garden gnome, and then back. They might have to hop the whole way, or bear crawl the whole thing. It’s up to you. Just keep it fresh and fun.

8. Paint with water

This activity requires different sizes of  paint brushes and a bucket of water. The kids can “paint” with the water on the driveway or any solid surface. The sun will dry the picture they have painted with the water, and it will disappear. They can “paint” any picture, have it disappear, and then “paint” something else. This is also great for children learning letters. They can draw letters over and over again.

9. YouTube brain break

Luckily, we can get YouTube on our television. It would work just fine on a computer, too, however. Just do a quick search for fun children’s songs or silly children’s songs. You can find “stations” that have a continuous play. Even my older daughter gets into the Hokey Pokey and Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes!

I wake up to my alarm going off.

After a night of getting up to go pee THREE TIMES in between fits of dreams and semi-sleep, it’s time to start my day.

I stretch in my bed, and notice the first twinges of pain in my back.

Reluctantly I stand up to start my day. It’s like I’ve been hit by a truck, and I can feel the stiffness consuming my being.

My back doesn’t want to bend at first, and my legs feel like tree trunks that are rooted to the ground.

Moving around to get my joints loosened, I notice I’m making old man sounds.

“Ugh, uh, oooh.”

Nice. How long have I been doing THAT without realizing it?

I take my flannel pajama clad, nightgown wearing self into the hall, and realize how I must look. I’m a mess of bed head, and my hair is sticking out every which way like a baby orangutan.

I have on no makeup, not even the remenents from yesterday … because I couldn’t be bothered to put any on yesterday.

My oh-so-stylish thick slip-resistant socks are starting to come off my feet, but I’m not bothered enough to fix them.

At what point did I start not caring, I wonder as I stiffly walk to the kids room.

When I go to wake up my kids, my mom comes out of my mouth. “Don’t make me pull you out of bed. Get up. School day. Get up, get up, get up.”

When did I turn into my mom, I think as I hold my sore back, and walk into the kitchen.

I start a pot of coffee, and throw two ibuprofen down my throat for my stiff joints. I tear off a wad of paper towels while I’m waiting for the coffee to brew, and start to blow my nose. I stop, mid snot spew.

Am I Turning Into My Grandmother?

I can specifically remember my grandmother doing this every morning when I was little. The flannel nightgown, the socks, the grunty noises with movement, the ibuprofen, the coffee, even the snotty paper towel.

When did I turn into a grandma?

No, I’m not talking about an actual, biological grandma. I’m talking about the persona of a grandma. When did I start dressing and acting the part. Why the hell am I making old person noises when I bend over, stand up, or go to sit down.

When did it come to this?

I look down at my nightgown and socks. At what point did I become so complacent that comfort … hideous comfort … was more important than being presentably my age?

Looking at my stiff body in the mirror I wonder, At what point did I let myself go?

When did I decide that stiff joints and pain were more important than stretching and taking care of myself?

I know exactly when it happened, although it happened gradually.

I can sum it up with one word: Kids.

I have become lazy with myself, putting my kids’ every need before mine. While I’ve heard my whole life, This is what a good parent does, when did it become okay to loose myself in the process?

I make a vow to myself here and now.

The flannel PJs and thick socks are going into the back of the closet. Better yet, I am going to Marie Kondo the crap out of my old-lady clothes, and get them out of the house.

I will work on yoga, pilates, or even walking daily to stretch the soreness out of these joints.

I will start respecting myself. Instead of going out looking sloppy, I will put on mascara (at the least) and do my hair to make me feel better everyday. I’m going to get myself back!!

I don’t want to continue on the fast-track to the grandma assisted-living facility.

Who’s with me?

You can prepare yourself and your child, but truth is, when the big day gets here, you won’t remember any of the things you prepared. You’ll want to hold on to their pant legs as they drag you down the hall, ugly crying, and not wanting to let go of your baby.

I’ve been there twice, so I can tell you, without a doubt, five things you do not want to do on the first day you drop your baby off at kindergarten.

5 Things To Avoid On Your Child’s First Day Of Kindergarten

Don’t Expect To Stay All Day – You can probably walk them to class, but don’t plan on camping out in the classroom for the day. It will just create more drama and stress for the teacher, the child, and also you. Make a quiet exit once your child is involved in the hustle and bustle of classroom activities. Now, if you want wait in your car all day crying torrents of tears, that’s on you. Pickup time will come soon enough, and you can hug on your new, big kindergartener the rest of the evening.

Don’t Make a Dramatic Exit – I know you want, on some level, your child to act like they can’t live without you. It probably makes you smile inside when your kindergartener doesn’t want to leave your side. Big, dramatic exits, however will just disrupt the class. It will probably cause tears, not only for your child, but for a number of other kids going through the anxieties of separation. That’s a good way to start off on the wrong foot with the teacher. Just say your goodbyes happily, and go. You may need to remind the child that you will be right back to get them after school. Don’t make it a big deal. Just go quickly and quietly.

Don’t Openly Weep When Your Child Goes To Class – I get it. You will probably have tears. I mean, kindergarten is a huge deal. It is a right of passage from preschool to school-age kid. I cried like my heart was fracturing in two. The thing is, though, I did it behind closed doors. If your child sees you upset, they will think something is horribly wrong, and they will be upset too. Keep it light and happy in front of them. They will feed off your energy, and be less stressed and happier too.

Don’t Tell the Teacher How To Do Their Job – You may think it’s imperative to tell the teacher that your child only reads while sitting on a soft chair. Maybe you want to make sure the teacher has bigger crayons, because that’s what your kid prefers at home. It might be that your child already knows their ABCs, and you want to make sure they get in an advanced group. Just breathe. This will all work itself out. Trust the methods the teacher has in place to do their job. They have each student’s best interest at heart. Now, if two months go by, and the teacher isn’t meeting your expectation, then talk to someone about the situation. In the first few weeks of kindergarten, though, just trust the process.

Don’t Give Your Child Sugary Treats In Their Lunch To Make Them Feel Better – What happens when you give your children sugary treats at home? Sugar hyperactive high, then a sugar crash. School is not the best place to make this happen. Give them good foods that will stabilize their mood and metabolism. Save the sweet treats for home time. If you want to send a treat, how about a little sweet note tucked in their lunch letting them know you love them!

Kindergarten gets here before you know it! One day you are rocking your baby to sleep, and it seems like the very next day you are sending them off, with a backpack that’s almost as big as they are, to a real big-kid school. Just breathe! Trust the people that are there to help your children transition and learn. Save the tears for after you leave. It will all be okay. I guarantee it!

100 Things To Put In Easter Eggs {That Aren’t Candy!}

100 Things To Put In Easter Eggs That Aren't Candy!

I mean, why should you have to choose when you could just be both? Ariel’s not a Disney Princess for nothing…in fact, I bet she’s probably got her own Magical Mermaid Crown stashed away somewhere, and if you want to claim your title as the best mermaid that’s ever existed, you’re going to need one too.

What You’ll Need to Make a Magical Mermaid Crown:

• Starfish
• Hot glue gun
• Plastic tiara
• Jute twine
• Assorted seashells

How to Make a Magical Mermaid Crown:

Take any decorative elements off of the tiara, like feather trim or jewels.

Cut a 4ft length of the jute twine and start twisting it gently but tightly around the bottom band of the tiara.

Once the bottom band is fully wrapped, use a dab of hot glue to secure both ends of the twine. You can also twist the twine underneath itself as an extra bit of reinforcement.

Carefully apply 2-3 inches of hot glue at a time to the decorative parts of the tiara.

Add twine over the top as you go, and wait for one section to dry before starting on another one.

Once the tiara’s silver surface is fully covered in twine, plan out how you will attach the seashells.

Putting the starfish right at the front makes it more dramatic, and laying out the rest of the seashells symmetrically will look pretty.

One at a time, add the center seashells to the crown by putting hot glue on the back of the shells and holding them firmly against the twine-covered tiara until the glue has set. Working from the center outward helps if you’re going for a symmetrical look.

After you’ve glued all your seashells, examine the crown to see if there are any additional spots where you can add some extra glue for reinforcement.

Pro-tip: For a bit of extra sparkle, you can get some glitter spray and coat the seashells with it before affixing them to the crown to make them really stand out.

What You’ll Need to Make a Magical Mermaid Wand:

• Wooden dowels
• Starfish
• Hot glue gun
• Sequined ribbon (optional)

How to Make a Magical Mermaid Wand:

If you plan to paint your wand a different color (and really, why wouldn’t you want to do that), place the wooden dowel in a container and paint the top half first. Let that dry completely before flipping it over and painting the bottom half.

Make sure your starfish is clean and that your glue gun is warmed up.

If you’re adding sequined ribbon to your wand, cut two 1-ft long strands. Put a line of hot glue about 2 inches down from the top of the dowel and wrap the ribbon around each side of the dowel so that it twists to the opposite side of the glue. This allows the ribbon to flare out instead of hang straight down.

Apply a thick line of hot glue down the center of the starfish and press the dowel into the glue.

Allow the first line of glue to dry, then seal the dowel further by adding horizontal lines of glue across the back of the dowel.

Pro-tip: You can use other types of ocean-related items as the centerpiece for your wand. Any pretty seashell with a solid back to attach the dowel to will do!

17. My daughter and I watch SimpleKidsCrafts all the time. The crafts are fun, easy and– you know, simple.
18. If your kids are into kid-created content then SevenAwesomeKids is one of the best. Each kid takes a day of the week and uploads that day, so there’s loads of content.
19. Jenny On The Spot is a super-goofy mom that will make your kids laugh, and you won’t be able to stop watching her, either.
20. EpicFunForKids is totally adorable, and if you have a Lego Lover, they won’t want to turn this channel off.
21. This science loving rapper is super fun to watch.
22. If you have older kids, they will love the Vlogbrothers. It’s two brothers who live in different towns and communicate with each other via their channel!
23. We totally love VSauce. It’s crazy cool facts you didn’t even know you wanted to know!

There’s a lot of stuff on YouTube that’s safe for kids to watch, but please remember to pay attention to what your kids are watching on the internet!

I don’t know if your sense of humor is anything like my sense of humor, but these movies are hilarious. And creepy. Two things I love, especially at the same time, which means I got to list some of my favorite movies of all time here.

I’m including a few kid-friendly options, but even those have spooky themes. If your kid gets nightmares or is easily scared, be sure to watch my recommendations before sharing with them. (It won’t be difficult. I made sure the kids’ options are fun for adults to watch, too.)

FUN MOVIES TO GET YOU INTO THE HALLOWEEN SPIRIT!

Zombies

Shaun of the Dead – An ordinary British guy and his best friend will try to survive the zombie apocalypse…after they realize it’s happening.

Zombieland – This coming of age comedy horror takes place in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, and amusement park. Oh, and Twinkies. The world is out of Twinkies.

Warm Bodies – Falling in love with a zombie would be rough…but at least this one’s getting warmer…

ParaNorman (kids) – A boy who can talk to ghosts must fight the ghost of a powerful witch who has raised hordes of zombies. A little on the scary side, so you might want to preview this one before watching with little kids.

Vampires

What We Do In The Shadows – A mocumentary about a house full of vampires and their day-to-day lives. There is nothing sleek or sexy about these fellas, and that’s part of what makes this movie fun.

Hotel Transylvania (kids) – Dracula’s daughter falls in love with a human who accidentally wanders into the family hotel. Enjoy a medley of monsters in this fun animated film. If you like it, try the sequel!

Witches

The Witches (kids) – Witches have a conference at the same place Luke and his grandmother are vacationing. Unfortunately, the number one goal of witches is to rid the world of children like Luke.

Hocus Pocus (kids and 90’s kids) – The Sanderson sisters come back 300 years after their death to suck the souls from the town’s children and gain immortality.

Ghosts

Ghostbusters – Ghosts are getting out of hand in NYC, so the Ghostbusters step in to rid their world of slimers, stalkers, and she-beasts alike.

High Spirits – Guy pretends his hotel is haunted. A couple of ghosts come to check it out and fall for two of the guests.

Casper (1995) (kids) – Loved this movie when I was young. A girl and her dad move into a haunted house to help the ghosts move on. Meanwhile, the evil owner wants to find the house’s treasure.

Madness

Tucker & Dale vs Evil – College kids go to a remote location and die in horribly gruesome ways, perhaps because of the two creepy hillbillies nearby. Meanwhile, Tucker & Dale wonder why all these college kids keep dying off around their new vacation home. This movie turns the “evil hillbillies” horror trope into a comedy of errors.

Cabin in the Woods – In this epic horror comedy, college students go to a cabin in the woods only to find something creepy in the basement. They unleash terror on themselves, not realizing that someone else is pulling the strings of their nightmare. This movie has been lauded for the way it approaches the horror genre and mingles the expected with the unexpected.

Arsenic and Old Lace – Don’t let the wholesome black-and-white fool you. Cary Grant is comedic gold as he has to deal with his sweet, doting, murderous aunties. Family-friendly with plenty of homicide.

Monsters

Monsters, Inc (kids) – A little girl invades the world of monsters, toddling around like a cutie while the monsters freak out.

Monster House (kids) – The house no kid wants to go near has a secret — it eats children.

Monsters vs Aliens (kids)- The government has a bunch of monsters in lockdown. Then aliens invade, and the monsters become heroes.

Scooby-Doo (2002) (kids) – Extra fun if you used to watch Scooby Doo cartoons, this live action parody has all sorts of in-jokes about Scooby and the gang. The kids will enjoy lots of slapstick and silliness, while adults catch little jokes just for them.

Editor’s Pick

Little Shop of Horrors – Down on his luck schmo finally gets chance with love of his life after talking plant brings fame, fortune, and a little murder to his flower shop in this must-see musical romp. My favorite scene features sadistic dentist Steve Martin who meets his match in pain-loving masochistic patient Bill Murry. I always end up in tears from laughing so hard!

When I was a kid, we’d all go out into the neighborhood, ON Halloween night, dressed in our hobo Indian princess pirate get-ups, knocking door to door and hoping we didn’t get kidnapped. Our food was either x-rayed by the local hospital (for fear of razors), or we threw caution to the wind and ate as much of it on the way home as possible so that we could avoid the ‘mom tax’.

You remember the ‘mom tax’, right? The amount mom charges for having to look for suspicious looking candy in your bag. Also, the houses were scary. Not all of them, but there was always that one neighbor who went over the top to try to scare the bejeezus out of us kids. And walking up to that door was a test of wills. If you made it, you survived, you got the good candy. If you ignored that house, everyone in school knew. I miss Halloween. I don’t know if it even exists anymore…

Halloween Was So Much More Fun When I Was A Kid

A big part of me thinks Halloween is just dead. I’m not sure it will ever come back to its former glory, or if we even live in a world where that is possible anymore. Now, kids don’t go to “Halloween Parties”, they go to “Fall Festivals”…and those festivals are all held ON Halloween night.

So the scary houses where people used to hand out the good candy don’t even bother anymore. Last year, despite the bloody handprints on my front door, and the gorified stuffed animals lining my front walkway, we had two trick-or-treaters on Halloween night. That was it. The rest of the street was blacked out, and kids either went to their church Fall Festivals, or something at school, or Trunk-Or-Treat, but none of them came to my house. What’s the point anymore?

What’s the point in decorating if you know kids aren’t coming? What’s the point in buying the good candy if all that’s going to happen is you’ll end up having to eat it during the weeks following Halloween. There’s no use in hanging spider webs, because there won’t be kids out to get tangled up in them. No use in dressing like a scarecrow and sitting still on your front porch, because there’s no one out there to grab and scare anymore.

And those few neighbors who do put in the effort? Now they’re likely to be harassed for it. Last year, Vicki Barrett of Parma, Ohio, was told that her decorations were so scary that the neighbors wanted her to take them down. When the neighbors learned that there was nothing illegal in Vicki’s decorations, they continued to harass Barrett and her family until they took down the decorations out of fear for her and her family’s safety.

How is that okay?

Now Halloween is so sanitized that I’m not sure we can even call it Halloween anymore. Gone are the good decorations, and candy. They’ve been replaced by safe church community rooms and elementary school gymnasiums. Now kids no longer have to face their fears to walk up to the scary house to get candy, they just go to the second grade teacher (who is dressed like a not-scary-at-all witch) and say, “Trick Or Treat!” and boom, candy. No tricks. Not even the fear of tricks.

Are we all so protective of our kids that we can’t let them experience any sanctioned scares anymore? Yes, the world we live in is a scary place, but in a time like this shouldn’t Halloween become the most important night of the year? It’s the night for kids to face those fears. The night where they can go up to that scary door and say, “You know what, world? I’m scared out of my wits but I’m going to face it.” It’s the one night where kids get to experience fear in the safe environment of their neighborhood, and are rewarded by candy for their effort. But all that is gone.

Can we even call it Halloween anymore if all that’s left are the treats?

As a parent, we want to do everything we can for our littles toward giving them a healthy and happy future. Part of that is building healthy habits and teaching them the best way to take care of themselves from a very young age.

But while it’s easy to frame good eating habits, and exercise habits for our kids, teaching them how to brush and keeping them excited about it isn’t quite as easy. While we have some control over what kids put into their bodies, and even keeping them active, brushing is very much a self-motivated activity. Sensitive teeth can be caused by a number of issues, but for a lot of people acid damages the enamel on their teeth and that’s why hot and cold cause so much pain. With kids eating acidic and sugary foods, or drinking soda that enamel wears down and causes pain. So kids might be reluctant to brush and might not even know why. Building those healthy habits while they’re young, and reminding them as they get older is an important key toward helping your kiddo’s have strong teeth for life.

Now That The Solar Eclipse Is Over, Here Are 10 Questions Your Kids Might Be Asking!

1. “Where did that strange and unusual plant come from? It’s really peculiar!”

That’s Audrey 2. She lives with us now. She gets a little ‘bitey’ though, so keep your fingers away…

2. “I took off my glasses and looked, will I go blind?”

As long as you didn’t look for too long, you’ll be okay. Normally the sun is too bright for us to look at it directly, but with the solar eclipse it was easier to look. Still, it takes more than a quick look to make you go blind.

3. “Will the dog go blind?”

Dogs don’t normally look at the sun, so they wouldn’t have looked at the solar eclipse, either.

4. “Why did it get colder?”

The sun’s rays are what warm our planet, and when the moon blocked them for a couple of minutes, they didn’t hit us as much. It’s like an umbrella blocking the rain.

5. “Did the sun hurt the moon during the eclipse?”

No, even though the eclipse changed the light from down here, it had no physical effect on the moon.

6. “Why was it so small?”

Even though the sun and moon are HUGE, they are very far away from us. So we might see pictures that make them look bigger, but those pictures were taken with special cameras. The sun is actually 92.96 million miles away.

7. “Why didn’t it last very long?”

Even though we don’t feel it, the earth is moving very fast. The longest anyone saw this solar eclipse was 2 minutes, 43 seconds. That’s because while the moon and sun are standing still, it only took a little less than three minutes for the earth to spin to a point where the moon was no longer covering the sun.

8. “Did the solar eclipse ‘do’ anything to us?”

Other than cause us to take a bunch of selfies in solar glasses, and create a bunch of pin-hole viewers, no. We’re good.

9. “When was the first solar eclipse?”

There have always been solar eclipses, though the first one recorded in history was by the ancient Babylonians on May 3, 1375. That was 642 years ago.

10. “When is the next solar eclipse?”

There are about 2 solar eclipses every 3 years, though they happen in different places around the globe. The next North American solar eclipse is on April 8th, 2024.

She defends this strange diet saying, “My daughter is growing like a weed and her doctor thinks she’s healthy, so what’s wrong with that?” Before she started this diet, the woman says her daughter was picky and would rarely eat the food placed in front of her.

Her inlaws are leading the witch hunt against said mom with her mother-in-law being her biggest critic.

“In my day, my kids were all fed homemade meals and didn’t take part in these ‘fad diets’ that kids today are into. It’s sickening that she can’t take the time to take care of my granddaughter properly.” The mother-in-law continues by saying, “In my day there was no such thing as picky eaters. Kids ate what was in front of them, or they didn’t eat.”

The mom defends herself. As a busy, working mom she feels justified in her decision on how to feed her child. “Sometimes its for convenience, sometimes it’s what she wants. Either way, she’s happy and healthy, isn’t that enough?”

While parents feel like they’re always under attack for their parenting decisions this moms decision could bring about life-long consequences for her daughter.

Nutritionist to the stars, Joanna Blythman, says we don’t need to be feeding our kids starchy carbs at all. That most kids do well on plant-based, raw diets.

Other nutritionists warn that restrictive diets can be harmful to kids, putting them at risk for nutritional deficiencies. That kids need starches and carbs in order to grow.

But is this mom going too far? How much is too much, and where do we draw the line?

Know Those Gross Moms Who Suck The Pacifier Before Popping It Back In? Turns Out Their Kids Are Healthier!

Ever wonder why kids today seem to get sicker than when you were little? A lot of it is the sanitized world we live in. Kids aren’t supposed to be this clean. Waaaaay back in the day kids were exposed to more germs. They ate more fermented foods (fermentation helped foods keep longer) which contained healthy bacteria. They also played in the dirt more and spent more time around animals. All that exposure to bacteria and germs was surprisingly good for them! Our immune systems need testing and growing just like the rest of us, and by trying to keep our kids safe and healthy, we’ve actually set them up to be more vulnerable to illnesses such as asthma, eczema, allergies, and more.

So yeah, that mom you always judge because her kids are a little on the dirty side? There’s a a good chance her kids are going to grow up with a more robust immune system because of it.

That’s not saying you need to let your kids get nasty, or let them stay dirty, but like your grandma always said, “A little dirt don’t hurt” and, in fact, it’s actually super beneficial!

So here’s what happens: our body has these little battle droids marching around looking for baddies to attack. They’re called “neutrophils.” A neutrophils entire job is to fight off the little micro germs we get from everyday grossness.

But when kids don’t get exposed to as many germs, neutrophils can’t do their job. So after a while they start getting grumpy. They keep on searching and searching for something to attack (’cause that’s pretty much their only job) and if they haven’t gotten to fight in a while, they go absolutely berserk on the first thing they come across. That means if your kid stays super clean, but then comes in contact with a little bit of pollen, rather than just a scuffle, the neutrophils drop atom bombs.

Boom. Asthma. And allergies. And major issues.

But if you work these little guys out, let them attack all the little bitty things your kids might do like licking dirty fingers, and eating food off the floor, and kissing dog’s on the lips, and other grossness, when the pollen comes along the neutrophil’s all, “Pfft. That little guy? He’s nothing.” And instead of a huge reaction, your child might sneeze.

A sneeze is WAY better than a visit to the ER.

So what are some ways you can let your kids get dirty without losing your ever loving mind? 

Let them play with animals.

5-second rule? No problem!*

Mud pies are our friends.

Hand sanitizer? Into the trash!

Don’t panic if your kid drinks after another kid.

Barefoot outside? Yes, please!

Clean, but don’t over clean.

Okay, there actually is a difference between good germs and bad germs…so maybe don’t go completely overboard, but don’t freak out every time your child has a speck of dirt on them, either. Robust immune systems come from exposure to germs…with no exposure, our kids won’t get the chance to build up their tolerance to everyday exposure while they’re little. And they need that in order to be healthy adults!

*Note on the 5-second rule: I’m not saying let your kid eat a piece of toast that fell butter side down. But if you see your kiddo drop a cookie and pick it up and eat it anyway…don’t freak out. They’re gonna be just fine.

1. Just tell them to mind you. I mean, I tell my dog what to do and he does it right away. Listen genius. A dog is not a child. As much as your dog IS your child, and I get that, your dog is never going to be a child. Your dog poops when you let him outside and tell him to go? Good for you! You tell your dog to eat his dog food, and he does? He minds. Congratulations! Your dog is still not a child. I’ll trade you: My children for your dog, one day. Trust me, just one is all you will need. Dogs are easy. Children, not so easy.

2. Your kids should be asleep by 7pm every night. Really? Well, thank you for your wisdom. I’ll keep that in mind as we are doing homework, doing chores, eating dinner, taking baths, getting ready for tomorrow, and trying to wind down from today. It’s always so peaceful and quiet here. You’re right, the kids should be asleep at 7pm. Thank you for your all-knowing wisdom. I’ll make sure your name is mentioned in the nominations for parent of the year. What is that? You’re not a parent? Oh, damnit! I forgot that for a minute. Your advice was genius. I must dislike my kids, since I didn’t think they needed the sleep. I’ll try to be more responsible in the future.

3. Your kids shouldn’t be allowed to watch more than 30 minutes of television a day. Well, oh brilliant one, do YOU want to watch them in the interim. Sometimes Mommy needs a break. Do I use the TV as a babysitter? No. Do I sometimes put a movie on, so Mommy can have sanity break? Most definitely. I know, I’m horrible. How dare I?

4. You know, you really shouldn’t let your kids have processed, sugary treats. Only give them foods from the periphery of the store, and you should never give them fast food. I can’t. I can’t even deal with you right now. Look, sometimes crappy food is going to happen. Mommy has a life, a busy one trying to wrangle two kids and maneuver them through life without becoming assholes. There are days that I can barely make it to bedtime, let alone cook a four-star, completely organic and nutritious meal from scratch before dark. There are days when I’m going to pull out the McDonald’s card. There are *gasp* some days when I’m going to let them have cereal for dinner. Yes, they get their fruits and vegetables, but crappy days are going to happen. Thank you for your concern.

5. You shouldn’t vaccinate your kids. You are just poisoning them. You are a brilliant dumbass. You’re right. I’ve done absolutely no research on this subject. I’m just going to fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants, and make the decision at the last second. I’m going to flip a coin: Heads vaccinate, Tails don’t vaccinate. I want to play Russian Roulette with my children and deadly diseases like whooping cough and the measles. I haven’t already, painstakingly agonized over this difficult decision. I haven’t outweighed the benefits versus the risks. Whew! Thank god I have you to tell me what I should do with my child’s health.

Your dog is looking a little hungry. Why don’t you take him to his dog food, and tell him to eat it. I’m sure he’ll mind. In the meantime, I’ll sit over here with my two feral children, and just keep messing up all your theories on good parenting.

YES, THAT IS WHAT I WANT TO SAY. Instead, I smile. I thank them for their advice, and let them go on thinking they know all things parenting. I don’t have to worry. In a few years, odds are, they will be eating their words when they have their own children.

Stay-At-Home Mom’s Viral Post About Summer With Kids Is Painfully Relatable

The post continues,

“Scene: I am cooking grilled cheese on the stove for the kids’ lunch. 8yo asks to go get the mail (the box is a few houses up the street). Not to ever miss out on anything ever, 4yo pipes in, “Me too!” Okay, fine. I give them the mail key and out the door they go. How could this go wrong? Such a simple task.

Hahahaha.

The thing is, my boys fight. All day. Every minute that they are awake. And sometimes in their dreams. So apparently a battle breaks out at the mailbox. (I still don’t know the whole story.) As I am cooking their grilled cheeses on the stove, my 6yo daughter (the reporter of all things non-compliant) comes tearing into the kitchen, yelling, “They’re fighting at the mailbox! And then mail went flying everywhere all over the neighborhood!”

So basically her kids are just like our kids…

“So I abandon lunch and sprint outside. I see both boys scrambling around from yard to yard, trying to grab pieces of mail. We live in Kansas where it’s windy 364.5 days of the year, so that helps.

My 4yo is now approaching the corner where our quiet cul-de-sac meets a very busy street, and I know him. He’ll think nothing of running directly into the street in order to capture that last piece of random junk mail that Mommy will be tossing as soon as we get home.

I am now chasing him, screaming his name, and also trying to pick up mail that is blowing all over the neighbors’ yards. I finally catch up to him, prevent him from darting into the busy intersection, and we all turn around to head home, hands full of papers.

But because he’s 4, refuses to walk anywhere ever, and is on an anti-shoes campaign this summer, my son of course runs down the street barefoot and falls. He rips open his foot on a rock or the pavement or whatever is in the road because THIS IS WHY WE WEAR SHOES.”

And now she’s got a bloody, sobbing four-year-old on her hands…

“So now I am half-carrying, half dragging a bloody-footed, crying 4yo, a crying 8yo who thinks he’s in trouble because of mail-mageddon, and piles and piles of junk mail and flyers that I will never look at ever back to my house.

Once the papers are tossed and the bloody foot is bandaged, we all smell the sulfur of burning grilled cheese and I remember what I was doing before this all happened.

So I did what any good mother would do. I scraped off the burnt parts, threw them on plates, and said bon appetit, kids. And I poured this beer.

So tell me, how’s your summer going?”

Literally, a little better after reading this. And I’m not the only one. Moms from across the globe loved Karen’s breakdown of what summer is like…

One wrote, “I just got all of the kids in bed and I feel like I *survived* something monumental. What a day! I can’t believe I have to do this again tomorrow…” Which, I think, sums up how every parent is feeling at this point.

My Teens Don’t Need A Helicopter Mom Anymore, And I Feel Like I’ve Been Retired

I’ve been a stay home mom since I was pregnant with my oldest, who just turned 17. So in me saying this, I have been truly blessed to have the opportunity to see all 5 of my kids firsts: coos, smiles, rolling overs, crawls, words, laughs, first day of school, all the milestones I have been a part of and now as they are getting older they aren’t needing me as much as I want them to, I’m having a harder time with it than they are. They are ready to go out and conquer the world, I mean I  have courageous and really independent children, and its not always that I don’t think they are ready for the responsibility, its all the unknowns of the outside that make me worry.  I could really drive myself crazy worrying about all the things that could happen.

I bet some of the most common characteristics of a helicopter mom is anxiety and worry. Pick something…seriously just pick something, and you will worry about it. Are you doing a good enough job, can you do more, the overwhelming anxiety does not make letting go easy. It just adds to the worry. Then theres guilt that goes hand in hand with this because you don’t want your child to see you stressing over the small stuff, and it causes them to now worry.

Where is there a balance in letting go and holding on? I don’t thing any parent has the perfect answer. You can read as many parenting books as you can get your hands on, but most is theory, and every child is so different that what will work for one will not work for another. Just having 5 of my own kids I can tell you this, once you think you have one figured out and try it with another child your approach won’t work, and you’re stuck back at square one feeling inadequate again, looking for any way to reach this kid.

All this is coming about because I am now faced with getting a job out of the house and my children will have to be home alone. I know a lot of people don’t see this as a big deal, and that thousands…even millions of children have to do this everyday, but I don’t want this for mine, this wasn’t how our family plan was set. I’m not saying either is right or wrong for anyone, all I know is what is best for my family and this is such a shell shock for all of us. I love being there for them whenever they need me, or when they don’t. Just to have that time with them, because you only get a short amount of time with them really before they are ready to begin their own lives and you’re just a second thought. Pretty soon they’re doing their own laundry, feeding themselves, driving around, and they have friends who fill in the gaps…what’s a helicopter mom supposed to do? It’s truly a beautiful thing seeing them get older and become independent, yet pulls the heartstrings, because those times of them needing mom all the time are gone.

1.”You ever figure out what causes that?” Seriously people!! Uh.. yeah, and we pretty much became pros at it. Then I smile real big…

2. “Are they all yours… and why is there a blonde one?” Um, genetics? Also, they all look like siblings! Neither me or their father could deny they belong to us, even if we wanted to. Also, his dad had blonde hair. GEEZ

3.  “You don’t look old enough to have 5, you must have gotten started early.” Well, yeah kinda. Met hubby at 17, married at 19, first baby at 20, and all delivered by the time I was 26. We had a plan and a goal, big family and no more after 25! We are a little more specific when throwing things like that out there in the universe to God to direct.

4. “You should get a tv to put in your room!” UMMM… why?  A tv, really, does that even work for some people…? You’re not paying for them, why does it matter if there are five? Plus, a tv wouldn’t make a difference anyways ’cause, remember? We perfected the art of making them. *wiggles eyebrows up and down suggestively*

Look, I get that a lot of people today see the typical family as something straight out of the Simpsons – 2.5 kids, and a dog – but we knew what we wanted early and we made it happen. Our kids are happy, healthy, and love having so many siblings to tussle around with. So feel free to put a television in your room and pop birth control like Skittles, ’cause we good, boo!
