So I've spent a serious chunk of time with God of War Ragnarök and I have to tell you — it's the rare sequel that actually sticks the landing. Not 'pretty good for a sequel.' Actually sticks it.

This isn't just a video game. It's a brutal, gorgeous meditation on fathers and sons, redemption and ruin, told through the eyes of two characters you genuinely care about. And yeah, the combat is absolutely unhinged in the best way.

Santa Monica Studio could've coasted. They didn't.

Why does this ending actually matter?

Most games don't earn their conclusions — they just sort of… stop. Ragnarök is different. Every story beat, every quiet moment between Kratos and Atreus, every piece of Norse mythology woven into the world has been building toward this since the 2018 reboot. The prophecy. The fate of the Nine Realms. What Kratos is actually afraid of.

It all lands. Which is not something I say lightly.

I've written before about games that tried to do too much and ended up doing nothing — Ragnarök is the opposite problem. It does everything and somehow pulls it off.

Is the combat as good as everyone says?

Yes. Aggressively, almost offensively good. You've got the Leviathan Axe, the Blades of Chaos, and new moves that make every single fight feel fresh even forty hours in. The difficulty scaling actually works — there's a real sweet spot between "I'm just mashing buttons" and "I need to lie down."

The environmental kills alone are worth the price of admission. Finding new ways to smash a giant's face into a wall genuinely never gets old. But what do I know — I also think the Blades of Chaos sound design deserves some kind of award.

Does the story hit harder than the first game?

Without spoiling anything — and I mean I genuinely won't — the writing in Ragnarök operates at a level most prestige TV can't reach. Atreus goes through real character development that doesn't feel forced. Mimir's voice acting will make you forget he's a disembodied head on your belt.

There's a scene about halfway through that made me pause and just sit there for a minute. Not because something exploded. Because something was said. That's rare in any medium, not just gaming.

How long is this thing, really?

Plan on 30 to 40 hours for the main story plus side quests. And the side content actually matters here — it's not fetch quests designed to pad a number. Some of the optional boss fights are harder than the main campaign bosses, and the rewards are worth chasing.

There's a full New Game+ mode too, if you somehow want to go back through it all with upgraded gear and a harder difficulty. Which, honestly, you probably will.

Does it look as insane as the trailers?

Your TV will feel inadequate. I played on a PS5 with a decent 4K setup and there were genuine moments where I just stopped moving to look at Midgard or Muspelheim. The level design is architectural perfection — every area tells a story just by existing in it.

The "no cuts" camera thing Santa Monica pioneered in the 2018 game continues here. You never once leave Kratos's perspective. Some people hate that choice. I think it's genius — it forces an intimacy that most action games actively avoid.

Are there frustrating moments?

Sure. A couple of boss fights lean hard into pattern memorization in ways that feel a little cheap. One puzzle section dragged longer than it needed to. Performance mode stutters occasionally on PS5, which is annoying when you've just paid for a next-gen machine.

But these are nitpicks on something that's otherwise close to flawless. I'm not going to pretend the whole thing is perfect — that would be doing you a disservice. The frustrating parts are real. They're just not the story.

Is Ragnarök worth buying if you skipped the first game?

If you played the 2018 reboot, this is a no-brainer. It's better in almost every measurable way. If you haven't played the first one — stop here, go do that first. The 2018 God of War reboot is where the whole emotional foundation gets built and you'll appreciate Ragnarök infinitely more when you actually understand who these people are and what they've been carrying.

If you don't care about God of War specifically but want a single-player narrative game that respects your time? This is the one. Full stop.

Ragnarök closes the book on Kratos's Norse saga in a way that feels genuinely earned — not rushed, not convenient, not wrapped up in a bow that doesn't fit. It's one of the best video game stories made in the last ten years, and it's the kind of ending you'll be thinking about long after the credits roll.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go back through it on a harder difficulty. Because apparently that's just where I am now.
