<aside class="ttb-tldr" data-testid="post-tldr" aria-label="TL;DR — quick answer" style="background:#fff5f8;border-left:4px solid #ec4899;padding:1.1rem 1.4rem;margin:0 0 2rem 0;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;"><div class="ttb-tldr__label" style="font-size:0.7rem;font-weight:800;letter-spacing:0.2em;text-transform:uppercase;color:#db2777;margin:0 0 0.5rem 0;">TL;DR</div><p class="ttb-tldr__body" data-speakable="true" style="font-size:1.0625rem;line-height:1.55;color:#1a1a1a;margin:0;font-weight:500;">If you want books that genuinely move the needle on motivation — not just the ones everyone buys and never opens — this list covers 13 worth your time. From Jen Sincero&#8217;s no-excuses energy to James Clear&#8217;s habit science to Brené Brown twice (she earned it), these are the ones that stick.</p></aside>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There&#39;s a version of this list that would just be &#39;books that look good on your nightstand.&#39; This isn&#39;t that list.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are the ones that actually do something. The ones you dog-ear and then go back and read the dog-eared pages again. The ones that show up in your brain at 2 a.m. when you&#39;re talking yourself out of a thing you should absolutely be doing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thirteen books. No filler. Grab one and go.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. <em>You Are a Badass</em> by Jen Sincero</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Jen Sincero writes like that friend who loves you too much to let you keep making excuses. This one is funny, sharp, and genuinely useful — which is a combo that&#39;s harder to pull off than it sounds. She breaks down exactly how self-doubt is the thing standing between you and everything you say you want, and then she hands you a crowbar.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#39;s not soft. It&#39;s not a pat on the head. But it doesn&#39;t feel mean, either. Tough love done right.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=you+are+a+badass+jen+sincero&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. <em>Atomic Habits</em> by James Clear</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Atomic Habits</em> is the book that proves you don&#39;t have to overhaul your entire life — you just have to stop underestimating what a 1% improvement compounds into. James Clear lays out the actual science of how habits form and stick, and then makes it usable. Not theoretical. Usable.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#39;ve seen people recommend this book for everything from fitness goals to creative work to just remembering to drink water, and honestly? All of those recommendations are correct.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=atomic+habits+james+clear&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large margin-top-lg margin-bottom-lg"><img width="1264" height="848" decoding="async" src="https://cdn.totallythebomb.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/06306b88c73b473e96643cfa65641b58.jpg" alt="13 motivating books that'll actually get you off the couch this year step 1" style="width: 100%; max-width: 800px; height: auto; border-radius: 10px; margin: 20px auto; display: block;" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. <em>The Power of Now</em> by Eckhart Tolle</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the one that sounds a little woo-woo until you actually read it, and then you realize it&#39;s just extremely practical advice dressed in spiritual language. Tolle&#39;s whole argument is that most of your suffering comes from living everywhere except right now — in the past you&#39;re replaying or the future you&#39;re dreading.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hard to argue with that when you think about it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If your motivation tends to get swallowed by anxiety about what&#39;s coming, this is the read.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=the+power+of+now+eckhart+tolle&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. <em>Daring Greatly</em> by Brené Brown</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Brené Brown built a career on research that basically proves what most of us already felt but couldn&#39;t name: vulnerability isn&#39;t weakness, it&#39;s the whole ballgame. <em>Daring Greatly</em> is where she makes that case most directly.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The argument here — backed by <a href="https://brenebrown.com/research/" rel="noopener">years of qualitative research at the University of Houston</a> — is that showing up, being seen, and risking failure is the only path to anything that actually matters. Which is motivating in a way that&#39;s almost uncomfortable.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=daring+greatly+brene+brown&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large margin-top-lg margin-bottom-lg"><img width="1264" height="848" decoding="async" src="https://cdn.totallythebomb.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/3f17c92132cf4b9887c6ff378c6f8ac3.jpg" alt="13 motivating books that'll actually get you off the couch this year step 2" style="width: 100%; max-width: 800px; height: auto; border-radius: 10px; margin: 20px auto; display: block;" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5. <em>The Gifts of Imperfection</em> by Brené Brown</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, Brown gets two spots. She earned them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Where <em>Daring Greatly</em> is about vulnerability as a strategy, <em>The Gifts of Imperfection</em> is more personal — it&#39;s about letting go of who you think you&#39;re supposed to be and getting on with being who you actually are. If perfectionism is the thing that keeps you frozen, this is the one to read first.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=gifts+of+imperfection+brene+brown&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6. <em>Girl, Stop Apologizing</em> by Rachel Hollis</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rachel Hollis goes straight at the specific excuses women use to talk themselves out of their own ambitions. It&#39;s a little blunter than your typical self-help read, which — depending on your mood — is either exactly what you need or a lot. Most of the time it&#39;s exactly what you need.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The chapter on stop asking permission is worth the price of the book alone.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=girl+stop+apologizing+rachel+hollis&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large margin-top-lg margin-bottom-lg"><img width="1264" height="848" decoding="async" src="https://cdn.totallythebomb.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2921730a262b4e07b580d47db43b0ca7.jpg" alt="13 motivating books that'll actually get you off the couch this year step 3" style="width: 100%; max-width: 800px; height: auto; border-radius: 10px; margin: 20px auto; display: block;" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">7. <em>The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F\</em>ck* by Mark Manson</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Manson&#39;s whole thing is that the self-help genre has a positivity problem — it tells you to feel good about everything, which is both impossible and exhausting. His counterargument is that you have a limited number of things you can genuinely care about, so you&#39;d better choose wisely.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That&#39;s it. That&#39;s the book. And somehow it&#39;s one of the most motivating things you can read, because it stops you from spending energy on things that were never going to matter anyway.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=subtle+art+of+not+giving+a+fck+mark+manson&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">8. <em>Big Magic</em> by Elizabeth Gilbert</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Big Magic</em> is for anyone who has a creative project they&#39;ve been circling for two years without actually starting it. Gilbert&#39;s argument is that ideas are alive, they&#39;re looking for someone willing to act on them, and if you wait too long they&#39;ll find someone else.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That image has personally haunted me in the best possible way.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=big+magic+elizabeth+gilbert&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large margin-top-lg margin-bottom-lg"><img width="1264" height="848" decoding="async" src="https://cdn.totallythebomb.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/912c9a0e0c374533aa090a0afff84223.jpg" alt="13 motivating books that'll actually get you off the couch this year step 4" style="width: 100%; max-width: 800px; height: auto; border-radius: 10px; margin: 20px auto; display: block;" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">9. <em>Lean In</em> by Sheryl Sandberg</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This one is worth reading even knowing everything that&#39;s happened since it was published, because the core argument — that women are socialized to step back right when they should step forward — is still true and still relevant. Sandberg&#39;s research on workplace dynamics holds up, and the practical strategies are solid.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There&#39;s a reason it sparked the conversation it did. It named something a lot of people had felt but couldn&#39;t articulate.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=lean+in+sheryl+sandberg&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">10. <em>The Confidence Code</em> by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>The Confidence Code</em> is one of the more interesting entries on this list because it takes a journalistic approach — Kay and Shipman are both reporters, and they actually went and interviewed neuroscientists, psychologists, and high-achieving women to figure out what confidence actually is and where it comes from.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Spoiler: it&#39;s less about what you&#39;re born with and more about what you&#39;re willing to do even when you&#39;re scared.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=confidence+code+katty+kay+claire+shipman&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:1.35rem;font-weight:900;line-height:1.2;margin:0 0 1rem 0;">Which one are you actually grabbing first?</h3>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">11. <em>Mindset</em> by Carol Dweck</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Carol Dweck&#39;s research on fixed vs. growth mindset is the kind of thing that sounds obvious until you start watching yourself operate in a fixed mindset and realize you&#39;ve been doing it your whole life. The idea is simple: people who believe their abilities can be developed through work outperform people who think talent is fixed. Every time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This book is why <a href="https://totallythebomb.com/friends-getting-theirs/" rel="noopener">that post I wrote about getting unstuck</a> kept coming back to the same idea — what you believe about your own potential is doing more work than almost anything else.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=mindset+carol+dweck&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large margin-top-lg margin-bottom-lg"><img width="1264" height="848" decoding="async" src="https://cdn.totallythebomb.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/bb7ddded84b640158f141e0b556e665b.jpg" alt="13 motivating books that'll actually get you off the couch this year step 6" style="width: 100%; max-width: 800px; height: auto; border-radius: 10px; margin: 20px auto; display: block;" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">12. <em>The 5 Second Rule</em> by Mel Robbins</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mel Robbins built an entire book — and a pretty enormous career — around one idea: when you have an instinct to act on a goal, you have five seconds before your brain talks you out of it. Count backward from five and move.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But what do I know? I was skeptical too. Then I used it to get out of bed at 6 a.m. three days in a row and now I&#39;m a convert.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=5+second+rule+mel+robbins&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">13. <em>You Are Here</em> by Thich Nhat Hanh</h2>

<figure class="ttb-figure">
</figure>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the quieter one on the list. Thich Nhat Hanh doesn&#39;t yell at you to hustle or optimize anything — he makes the case that being fully present is the foundation that makes everything else possible. It&#39;s the kind of book you read slowly, and it still lands harder than most things written twice as long.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you need something that&#39;ll slow you down in order to speed you up, this is it. There&#39;s a reason it keeps showing up on <a href="https://totallythebomb.com/my-book-in-a-picture/" rel="noopener">my list of books I actually reread</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=you+are+here+thich+nhat+hanh&#038;tag=totathebombco-20" rel="noopener">buy it here</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thirteen books, and I&#39;d genuinely stand behind every single one. Not because they&#39;re all the same — they&#39;re not, they argue with each other a little — but because motivation isn&#39;t one-size-fits-all and neither is the year you&#39;re about to have.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pick the one that sounds like it&#39;s talking directly to your specific problem right now. Read that one first. The others will still be there.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you&#39;ve already read half of this list and didn&#39;t find what you were looking for, check out <a href="https://totallythebomb.com/obsessed-with-podcasts-lately/" rel="noopener">the one about podcasts that do the same job</a> — sometimes you need someone talking at you more than you need to sit still with a book.</p>
