You Paid How Much For That? Why LuLaRoe Is More Than Money

Look, you could read the rest of this if you are wondering, “Why is LuLaRoe so expensive?” But let me be honest with you, I have no idea why it’s so expensive. Even LuLaRoe sellers know that LuLaroe Leggings are total crap, and you should NOT waste your money on the LuLaRoe dresses, shirts, or skirts.

LuLaRoe used to be worth the money. LuLaRoe used to be expensive for a reason. Then a lawsuit claimed that LuLaRoe stopped paying their manufacturer, MyDyer, and they now owe them millions of dollars. This means that they’ve since changed manufacturers, and now they are just awful in every way. They treat their retailers like second class citizens, and I am not impressed.

Whatever you do, do not buy LuLaRoe.

LuLaroe Consultants have actually filed several class action lawsuits against LuLaroe and one even claims that in 2017, retailers of LuLaRoe encouraged one woman that she should sell breast milk in order to be able to afford starting a LuLaRoe business.

LuLaRoe is a pyramid scheme

They prey on helpless moms via social media who are hoping to take care of their families and bring some extra income into their home. Their unfair business practices have resulted in Lawsuit after lawsuit filed against them.

I’ll never forget the day LuLaRoe announced their new t-shirt dress, the Carly. I about went nuts over the pictures.

I could see myself layering it with a long sweater, leggings and boots. Belting it with flats. Oh, the options were endless!

And then my friend scrunched her nose at me and said those words, “$50 for a t-shirt? Really?”

Honestly, I never even blinked at the price tag, and that’s a new one for me.

Why LuLaRoe Is More Than Money

LuLaRoe clothing runs from about $25 for leggings all the way up to $70 for a duster style sweater. Most of their dresses fall somewhere around $40-$60. Before LuLaRoe entered my life I was a career thrift store shopper, clearance rack stalker, and sale obsessed.

If it wasn’t discounted, I wasn’t interested. If something didn’t fit quite right or look perfect–who cared? It was only $5.

When a friend of mine invited me to this LuLaRoe sale I eyeballed the prices, laughed and said, “Yeah, right.” I snagged a few pairs of brightly patterned leggings because I’d worn holes in my discount bin pairs and figured some prints could liven up my life.

Little did I know…I was about to have a problem…

It started slowly enough in December 2017, LuLaroe became an obsession.

A few more leggings.

I’ll try that skirt.

Might as well give that dress a whirl.

I like that print so much I don’t care what it’s on so long as I have it.

And then…I realized I was going whole weeks at a time with at least part of my outfits being a LuLaRoe thing.

Then a big life event happened for me in February: I was laid off from the same job I’d had for nine years. Nine. Years. And I was devastated.

That day I cried my eyes out, put on my favorite pair of LuLaRoe leggings and let myself be hopeless and miserable. The very next day I got up, put on the most rediculous outfit of leggings, a skirt, a tank top and a sweater possible and got to work.

I was going to be a full time author, dang it, and the first thing I reached for on all occasions that week to make me feel better? My LuLaRoe.

Though there’s not really a “typical” person who wears LuLaRoe, I’m probably less typical than most. I’m weird. Out there. And still, this is a brand that speaks to me.

I’ve found that, when I wear their clothing, when I compliment other people on their Roe and likewise receive compliments, I feel better about myself.

As a creative person, this is a big deal.

My state of mind, keeping myself thinking positive, is worth more than a $50 t-shirt dress.

And I’m not alone.

There are many other women out there who feel like I do.

Yes, I can hear you now. All the reasons why I’m silly, why $50 is still $50, and the rational is valid. And so is mine.

LuLaRoe makes clothing that has changed the way I feel about myself and the way I approach getting ready for my day. It’s created a more positive, happier person in me, and for that reason, I’ll gladly remain a loyal customer.

  1. Thank you! I am just starting my lularoe adventure but I already love every piece I’ve bought so far! I have pretty bad buyers remorse. The only reason I purchased a lula shirt was because I had still been wearing my maternity clothes and I was sick of it! I wanted something that fit that didn’t make me look frumpy and feel fat! I was feeling bad for some of the purchases I made which would have given me sticker shock in the past. This really spoke to me. Lularoe has made me feel normal again instead of postpartum! I rock out in my Lula and that is priceless ❤️

  2. have you tried Silver Icing exclusive leggings? They are amazing! Just sayin’ 😉

    1. @Deanna, maybe log out before posting a comment Deanne

  5. I love everything about this and can totally relate! Since I hasa baby earlier this year I haven’t really bought any clothes for myself and would mostly wear old/super cheapthings that looked bad…enter LLR and I feel cute and put together most days! It’s amazing what a difference it makes. More power to you! Keep rocking it girl

  6. Oh Sidney… I think we’d be friends! 🙂 I have those shoes, except mine are heels. Plus, Lularoe UNICORNS!!!

  7. How can I buy this in Austarlia? Is there an online store with international postage? I desperately need some fun leggings!

      1. Unless you make a friend that will buy it for you and ship it, you won’t be able to purchase… yet. I’m sure the company will be international eventually

      2. If you are still looking for a way to get your hands on some LuLaRoe, shoot me an email and I will gladly get some to you!

  8. This is exactly what happened to me. I bought a Randy from a friends launch to “help her out” and now I am weeks away from my own onboarding call. I can’t wait to see other women find their confidence again. LuLaRoe has changed my life! Love your article!

  9. Love this! THIS is why I became a LLR consultant! 🙂 I love helping women feel good about themselves. That is truly priceless!

  10. Actually your outfit for your first day of the rest of your life after job loss is fantastic! You look amazing—- and I’m a nearly 75 year young mother of 8, grandmother of 24 and great grandmother of one! Love your post and personally love LuLaRoe clothes as well. My tastes for myself run more on the classic track with dramatic touches but I love it when people are able to express who they are physically as well as all the other ways we normally do. Keep up the good work!

  11. I have been a fellow addict for the last 2 years. It is amazing to me how many times I am complimented on my LLR outfits. My body does not fit into most department store jeans, and with 3 kids, shopping is a frustrating, tear inducing torturous punishment. So to have comfortable, flattering, beautiful clothing that feels like it was made just for me – utter perfection. For me, the price tag doesn’t matter because I feel like a million bucks!

  12. I so feel ya! When I read the first several lines of this, it was like I wrote it myself! I did become a consultant myself and have loved every minute of it! For just the sheer delight I can bring to the women who try it for the first time. From the sparkle in the eyes and smile of the 75 year old grandma to the grin of the 16 year old girlfriend of my teen son, it brings me so much joy to be able spread the comfort and happiness! It feels like I’m a LuLaFairy rather than it being a job.

  13. I feel exactly the same way! I gained a lot of weight when I had my son due to a host of medical issues and have HATED clothes shopping for the past 6 years because of it. LuLaRoe clothing makes me feel beautiful again. I love it so much.

  14. I am not a consulant whatsoever. I am a mom of 3, has two part time jobs (m&a analyst and online esl teacher) just so I can keep up with my kids’ lives and activities. I used to be a jean and tshirt or a shorts and tshirt mom. I never spent more than $20 for a piece of clothing — but lo and behold the first time I tried on LLR leggings and LLR nicole — I fell in love with LLR. I kept buying coz I feel adorable, young but sophisticated and my kids think I look awesome. I feel classy and comfy at the same time I can’t even explain how exactly I feel. I don’t even look at the prices anymore it’s scary but happy at the same time if I’m the first one who says sold on a unicorn. Thanks for sharing your story!

  15. I think you are amazing! This story rang true to me as well, looking for work I found LuLaRoe. My friends probably think I am crazy as well, as a starving artist this brand made me feel happy, and satisfied. My girlfriend sent this to me, thinking I could relate. Congratulations on your success!

  16. hello loved reading your article i could realate with what you were saying except i’m 65,but my heart is 30 and i too feel more like a 30 yr old when i wear my lularoe and bargain hunting is just my favorite items CHRISTMAS items can’t wait for lularoe holiday leggings

    1. I love your response to this!! My daughter introduced me to Lularoe about a month ago…..she is 26…

and I am 65 just like you!! I feel exactly like you have described. Made me feel happy to read your comments!

  17. Exactly how I feel when I’m wearing LLR. I used to be jeans and a t-shirt mom of 4. That was my total identity. I was “the” swim mom. Then I bought one pair of fun leggings. Then another. Then a Classic T, then a Perfect T. I tried a few of the dresses, but ended up sending them back — they weren’t “Me” Until the Carly came out. Now I have 5 or 6 Carly’s, a dozen or more Perfect T’s, a few Classic T’s and a bunch of Irma’s. Oh, and an entire drawer for of Leggings (shhhhh, no one knows about those) The fun part? I’m a plus size 50 yo mom that works from home now I still get dressed every day in my LLR as if I’m going somewhere – just makes me feel good !

  18. Love your story and your look! Keep rockin the Roe girl. You’re amazing!

  19. Thanks for sharing your story! You are adorable. Keep rocking Lula (or whatever you wear) in your own style.

  20. Yup – sitting here all kinds of emotional.

As a consultant all the things you mentioned are also all the reasons I joined LLR. I am a plus size girl who didn’t wear dresses, or skirts, or color, or apparently have a personality – though my Hello Kitty half sleeve clearly indicates that I do – I just didn’t like getting dressed – clothes didn’t reflect my personality – until I found LLR.

Now I wear flamingo shirts, pineapple/pizza/ice cream skirts, and doggie dresses. My legs are often adorned with candy, critters, and funky patterns, and I feel comfortable in the clothes, and my own skin!

And in addition to fun well made clothes – they are also ethically made. You pay a little more for a shirt made in a factory that provides a safe work environment and pays their workers a living wage. When they can’t make the clothes in the US (because the factories are already at capacity) they always thoroughly inspect their factories. In fact Deanne frequently makes trips to Guatemala to tour our facilities.

Anyway – thank you so much for this -you rock!

    1. AMEN sister! Same here! Never did I ever think I would as much as try on a pencil skirt until my inventory arrived and the Cassie was starting me down. Now one of my favorite pieces!

  21. You described my addiction to LLR to a T, a Perfect T! My wardrobe used to consist of ill fitting clothes that I was always tugging on or adjusting or just feeling eh about. It covered my body, was acceptable for my work and mostly black.

July 7th I bought my first Azure skirt because I won $5 in a pop-up. Because the consultant was local I went to her house to pick up my skirt and tried on several styles. I left with the skirt, an Amelia dress (my favorite for work) and a perfect T. I now own 4 skirts, 9 dresses, 3 Perfect T’s and 6 leggings! August 24th I signed up to become a consultant…waiting To onboard! Getting dressed each day is now fun! I look forward to Roeing!

Quality, fit, easy wear and the extra pep in my step because I FEEL great is worth every dime!

    1. Welcome to the LuLaRoe sista-hood! Sounds like you got a lot of experience before signing on! I just signed on to help my daughter and THEN I got hooked!

  22. This is a great story and I do like the clothing line I just recently was invited to a pop up and really did want to purchase something but the price is just out of my budget. I would love to be able to feel the same way you do in these clothes as I’m sure all women would but as I showed up to this pop up really excited as I looked through the racks and matched up really cute leggins with some really cute tops. Only to have the price chart posted in a picture frame on the counter where I found I had almost $250 in my hands in only 4 or so items of clothen and knew there was no way I could afford that I slowly walked back to the racks and put it all back. As I felt horrible for leaving the hostess home not buying a single thing and was a bit embarrassed at the same time at having to put it all back, As I’m sure a few more of her guest felt the same as I did. I Only wished more women could have the opportunity to wear these type of clothes if only the price was more reasonable priced for all types of budgets. I just wonder how much more they would sale if this was the case. What really topped it off that weekend of my first pop up was the next time I saw the hostess she apologized to me saying ( I had no idea the stuff cost that much. If I had I wouldn’t have had the party) I believe she felt bad seeing her guest feel bad. Just something to think about.

    1. Clothes made ethically that wash and wear well cost a little more. They won’t compromise cost for quality of life.

I would encourage you to research some of the bigger, cheaper stores like H&M and see how their factory workers are treated – then look into LLR. The clothes are worth the investment I assure.

      1. yes.

I totally get that they’re on the pricier side, but they have a commitment to get out of the “fast clothing” realm (Target, Old Navy, H&M) where inhumane conditions exist across the board.

It’s the same thing with healthy, organic, ethically made food- if that’s important to you, you find a way to work it into your budget.

I hope you can find something you love! I’m so sorry you felt embarassed putting the clothes back- I guarantee you the consultant and hostess didn’t mind- we all have different life circumstances.

    2. I totally see what you are saying, it would be amazing if all women could get LLR because it really does make women feel great about themselves. However, I think you are looking at it wrong. LLR is Boutique clothing, have you ever visited a real boutique? Their clothing can range from $100-$200 for one item! LuLaRoe has been able to cut that in half, if not more so more womeb can enjoy it. Plus the offer rewards for hostesses so you can get free itens! My advice to you is buy 1 piece at a time, you dont have to be dressed head to toe all the time in LLR. Wear leggings with a Target Top. Buy a top that pairs with some Kohls jeans. Then find a hostess with great rewards & earn yourself some clothing for free! I personally think LuLaRoe is better than any “real” Boutique or Department store at making it’s clothing afforadable to everyone because I have never walked out of a real boutique or department store with 6 free items just for inviting my friends to shop.

  23. That is great to hear how this brand changed your life. I found the same feeling with legging army. I don’t have the budget for lalaroe. Legging army is more affordable and is the same blend as lalaroe. So i know i am getting that same confort. And less worries about my favorite print being hard to find or no pop up events. Should you want to try legging army brand. Please contact me !!

    1. They might be the same blend (poly/rayon/spandex) but the double brushed process that makes the leggings buttery soft is patented and cannot be reproduced by another brand.
