Your Instagram messages don’t have to stay the same color. Open a chat, tap its name, then choose Themes and pick an available option.
If a group chat needs 27 messages to agree on a pizza topping, it might as well look cute while everyone argues about pineapple.
Give the chat a little makeover
- Open your messages in the Instagram phone app.
- Choose the conversation you want to change.
- Tap the chat name at the top.
- Choose Themes, then pick an option from the list.
That’s the route in Meta’s Instagram DM instructions. Start inside the conversation. There is no reason to wander through your entire profile looking for a color palette.
One thing before you go rogue with the pink: Meta says chat themes change the background and text-bubble colors for everyone in the conversation.
Everyone. This is a group decorating decision.
My suggestion? Ask before giving the family chat a dramatic makeover. “Want to change the theme?” is plenty. We do not need a decorating committee, but a little warning is nice.
Pick from the choices your app actually shows. An older example is not a promise that the same theme will be there. These steps follow the phone-app route, so don’t use them as a map of desktop menus.
If Themes is missing, first check that you’re inside a conversation and have tapped its name. Checking for an app update and consulting Instagram’s Help Center are sensible next steps, not a guaranteed fix.
