I Wasn’t Emotionally Prepared To Watch Onward Right Now

Disney’s new Pixar movie Onward was just released to Disney+, and I was so excited to watch it.

Until I started actually watching it, and within seconds me and my daughter were both in tears. The thing is, this movie should have come with a Trigger warning and I am not sure with everything happening in the world right now that anyone is emotionally prepared for this movie.

Let me just say that it is an awesome movie. I loved it so much. It’s sweet and endearing, funny in all the right places and all around adorable.

But it’s also a little deep, and a little sad.

There’s a whole lot of love and a whole lot of family bonding, but there’s also — the most famous of all Disney tropes, a dead parent.

I don’t know why in order to tell a good story both parents can’t be alive, but it seems that, yet again, they’ve gone the route of killing off one of the parents in order to sell tickets.

And, for the most part, it works in Onward, but it’s really hard to watch. It’s especially hard to watch right now.

There’s a whole lot of good, but if you’re anything like me, you’re all sorts of stressed out right now and you can’t handle anything emotionally heavy. I am still thinking about this movie DAYS after watching it.

So, for now at least, hold off on this one until you’re in a better place.
