McDonald’s has a menu right now with Japanese Spicy Garlic Black Pepper McNuggets, Australian onion rings, a Canadian Bacon Hot Honey McCrispy and a South Korean salted caramel dipped cone.
And naturally, most of us cannot just drive over and order it.
The latest Global Favorites lineup is being served at McDonald’s restaurant at its corporate headquarters in Chicago, where the chain rotates food from McDonald’s menus around the world.
I need whoever is making these decisions to explain why onion rings are apparently an international privilege.
What’s on McDonald’s Global Favorites menu?
According to current coverage of the Chicago menu, the savory lineup includes a Bacon BBQ Stack associated with the U.K., a Bacon Hot Honey McCrispy from Canada, Spicy Garlic Black Pepper McNuggets from Japan and onion rings listed with Australia.
Then dessert gets involved.
The menu also includes a Salted Caramel Dipped Cone and OREO Salted Caramel McFlurry associated with South Korea, plus filled McPops in dulce de leche, berry and chocolate-hazelnut flavors.
That is an aggressively good fast-food menu for something available at one restaurant.
There is one catch
This is not a nationwide McDonald’s rollout.
The Global Favorites menu is at the McDonald’s HQ restaurant at 1035 W. Randolph Street in Chicago. Current reporting says this particular lineup is expected to stick around into roughly mid-November, although limited-time menus can change.
So if you are nowhere near Chicago, please join me in staring at the Japanese McNuggets from afar.
McDonald’s should absolutely steal from itself more often
The funny part about McDonald’s international menus is that they make it painfully obvious how much food the company already knows how to make.
We are not asking somebody to invent onion rings from scratch here.
And the Bacon Hot Honey McCrispy? Hot honey is already everywhere. Put bacon on it and let America make its own choices.
The item I’m most curious about, though, is the Spicy Garlic Black Pepper McNuggets. A McNugget that comes preloaded with actual flavor instead of making me conduct a sauce-selection interview at the kiosk feels like progress.
Could any of these go nationwide?
McDonald’s has not announced this Global Favorites lineup as a nationwide U.S. menu.
That distinction matters because the Chicago HQ restaurant is basically its own little McDonald’s universe. An item appearing there is not a promise that it is headed to every drive-thru.
But if McDonald’s needs somebody to formally submit the request for nationwide onion rings and salted caramel McFlurries, consider this submitted.
Especially the onion rings.
