Heavy Handed Advice is exactly what it sounds like — opinions you didn’t ask for but probably need. This is the corner of the internet where I tell you what I’d tell my best friend, which is sometimes “you’re right” and sometimes “you’re being ridiculous.”
What kind of advice is on TTB?
Life stuff. Money stuff. Relationship stuff. Parenting stuff. The kind of advice that doesn’t come with a 17-step plan or a $99 download. Just honest takes from someone who’s made every mistake worth making and lived to write about it.
Who writes the advice posts?
I do. — blogger since the AOL days, currently raising one kid and several houseplants. If I write it, I mean it.
Got a question that isn’t covered here?
If it’s the kind of question you’d ask at midnight when nobody else is awake — love, work, the weird dreams — that’s exactly what I built Elementually for. No scripts, no judgment, just answers.

  • You Might Be Shocked When You See Your Tax Return This Year, And Not In A Good Way

You Might Be Shocked When You See Your Tax Return This Year, And Not In A Good Way

The last couple years have been pretty stellar for tax returns.

I’ve been quite pleased with my returns, and have been able to take some fun trips with the money.

But, that might not be the case when it comes to tax returns this year.

This is super bad news, especially since everyone is forecasting a recession in the coming year.

It turns out that the end of this year will see the expiration of many pandemic benefits that were put in place to help Americans ease their pockets during the crisis.

According to Mark Steber, chief tax information officer at Jackson Hewitt, the end of financial benefits might mean that families will see smaller tax refunds when they file after the beginning of the year.

One big benefit that is going to be changing is the Child Tax Credit.

When I say “changing,” it’s really going to be reverting to its pre-pandemic amount.

Prior to the pandemic, the CTC was $2,000 per child. Still a pretty good amount, but it was raised to as much as $3,600 per kid to help us through the pandemic.

Depending on how many kids you have, this can be a pretty hefty cut in the tax returns that we’ve seen during the last couple years.

You’re probably going to have not as pleasant [a tax return] experience as you had last year.

    Mark Steber

So, bottom line, file those tax returns like normal, but don’t expect large refunds.

A good rule of thumb is to expect close to what you received BEFORE the pandemic hit.

Of course, that is assuming that your job situation hasn’t changed.

Everyone’s situation is different, so unfortunately you have to plan accordingly.

  • How to Save Money at Starbucks Every Time You Visit

How to Save Money at Starbucks Every Time You Visit

Are you a Starbucks addict who can’t resist stopping by for your daily latte fix? While we love the tasty treats and cozy atmosphere at Starbucks, it can be easy to overspend on your caffeine habit.

So if you love your daily Starbucks fix but feel like it’s burning a hole in your wallet, don’t worry, you’re not alone! But, did you know that there are plenty of ways to save money at Starbucks without sacrificing your favorite drinks and snacks?

We’ve got some clever tips and tricks to help you save money at Starbucks without sacrificing your love for the iconic coffee chain.

How to Save Money at Starbucks Every Time You Visit

    Use a rewards program.

If you’re not already a member of Starbucks Rewards, now is the time to sign up! As a member, you’ll earn points for every purchase you make at Starbucks, which can be redeemed for free food and drinks. Plus, you’ll get exclusive offers and discounts throughout the year. The app is the easiest way to pay and gather those rewards so make sure you download it.

    Bring your own cup.

Did you know that Starbucks offers a discount if you bring your own reusable cup? Simply bring in your own mug or tumbler and ask for the “BYOC” discount at the register. You’ll save 10 cents on your purchase, which may not seem like much, but it adds up over time!

    Skip the fancy drinks.

It’s easy to get tempted by all the fancy drinks on the Starbucks menu, but they can also be the most expensive. If you want to save money, stick to the basics like a regular coffee or tea. You can still add your favorite syrups and toppings for flavor, but it will be much cheaper than a specialty drink.

Take advantage of Starbucks happy hours.

Starbucks often has happy hours where you can get half-priced drinks, so be sure to check the app or your local Starbucks to see when the next happy hour is happening.

    Order a smaller size

Order a “short” size drink. Starbucks offers three different drink sizes: tall, grande, and venti. If you’re trying to save money, order a “short” size drink instead of a tall. The short size is smaller than a tall, but it’s still a satisfying amount of coffee and it will save you some cash.

  • How to Make the Perfect Hot Chocolate for Winter

How to Make the Perfect Hot Chocolate for Winter

Winter is here, and with it comes the desire for warm, comforting drinks. Hot chocolate is a classic favorite, but it can be easy to get it wrong. Whether you’re making it for yourself or for a group of friends, these 5 easy tips will help you make the perfect hot chocolate every time.

    1. Choose high-quality chocolate.

When it comes to hot chocolate, the quality of the chocolate you use makes a big difference. Look for chocolate that is at least 60% cocoa, and avoid anything that contains artificial flavors or preservatives. The higher the cocoa content, the richer and more chocolatey your hot chocolate will be.

    1. Don’t use too much water.

One of the most common mistakes people make when making hot chocolate is using too much water. This can dilute the flavor and result in a thin, unappealing drink. Instead, use just enough water to cover the bottom of your pot, and then slowly add more as needed to reach your desired consistency.

    1. Don’t boil the chocolate.

Another common mistake is boiling the chocolate, which can cause it to seize up and become thick and clumpy. Instead, heat the water and chocolate together over medium heat, stirring constantly until the chocolate is melted and smooth.

    1. Add a little something extra.

For an extra special touch, try adding a pinch of cinnamon, a splash of vanilla extract, or a dollop of whipped cream to your hot chocolate. These simple additions can take your hot chocolate from good to great.

    1. Enjoy it with friends.

Hot chocolate is best enjoyed when shared with others. So invite some friends over, make a big pot of hot chocolate, and enjoy each other’s company on a cold winter’s night.

    FAQ:

Q: Can I use milk instead of water to make hot chocolate?

Yes, you can use milk instead of water to make hot chocolate. In fact, using milk will make your hot chocolate richer and creamier. However, keep in mind that using whole milk will make your hot chocolate thicker and more luxurious while using skim or low-fat milk will make it lighter and less rich. You can also experiment with different types of milk, such as almond milk or soy milk, to give your hot chocolate a unique flavor.

Q: Can I make hot chocolate without cocoa powder?

A: Technically, you can make hot chocolate without cocoa powder by using melted chocolate instead. However, it will be much richer and more expensive than using cocoa powder, so we recommend using cocoa powder as the base for your hot chocolate.

Q: Can I make hot chocolate with water instead of milk?

A: While it is possible to make hot chocolate with water, it will not be as rich and creamy as hot chocolate made with milk. Milk adds a depth of flavor and creaminess that water cannot provide. If you are looking for a dairy-free option, you can use a plant-based milk such as almond or soy milk instead.

  • Drew Barrymore Says She Doesn’t Buy Christmas Gifts For Her Kids. Here’s Why.

Drew Barrymore Says She Doesn’t Buy Christmas Gifts For Her Kids. Here’s Why.

The highlight of my year is buying Christmas gifts for my kids, but Drew Barrymore says she doesn’t buy Christmas gifts for her daughters.

    Like, seriously. None.

Before you feel bad that her daughters — Frankie, 8 and Olive, 10 — won’t be waking up to a ton of presents under the tree come Christmas morning, check out her reasoning.

I always take them on a trip every Christmas.

    Drew Barrymore

I mean, a trip somewhere special would be kinda cool.

I don’t get them presents, which I think at their ages they don’t love, but I say, ‘I think we’ll remember the place and the photos and the experience and that’s what I want to give you

    Drew Barrymore

But, I’m not sure how I would feel about missing out on the giggles and squeals of delight from my kids come Christmas morning.

They get plenty of things throughout the year, so I’m not like some weird, strict, cold mom who’s like, ‘You don’t get any gifts!’

    Drew Barrymore

I just feel like a better gift would be a life memory. I’d rather invest [in that than in] a doll house or something. It all evens out and it’s fine.

    Drew Barrymore

Drew said that there was one Christmas where they couldn’t go on a trip — through the Pandemic, like most of us — so she did end up giving her girls Christmas gifts instead.

The experience was apparently not a great one — not as good as a trip together, making core memories.

I’m fine to skip this. This sucks.

    Drew Barrymore

She says that Frankie and Olive “don’t complain about not liking what they get,” and rather enjoy taking a family trip.

While she is sticking to her guns about her Christmas gift stance, Drew understands that this trip tradition might not be forever.

[I try] to remember that one holiday won’t be probably the same as one 10 years from now, that your life can dramatically change, and new people and new traditions can come into it.

    Drew Barrymore

I like looking at the holidays through a comedic, realistic lens of, we’re gonna have a lot of different holiday stories.

    Drew Barrymore

What do you think of Drew’s presentless Christmas tradition?

  • Anne Heche’s Autopsy Report Says She Did Not Have Active Drugs In Her System At The Time Of Her Crash

Anne Heche’s Autopsy Report Says She Did Not Have Active Drugs In Her System At The Time Of Her Crash

The report is finally back on Anne Heche’s death, and the results are a bit surprising.

Back in August, Anne Heche crashed her car headfirst into a Los Angeles home in a horrific accident that landed her in a coma.

She eventually succumbed to her injuries, and sadly, passed away a few days later.

It was reported, early on, that Anne had drugs in her system at the time of the crash.

According to CNN, there were no active drugs found in actress Anne Heche’s system at the time of her terrible crash.

Now, there were inactive drugs found in her system during the original toxicology tests.

The coroner report states that the drugs that were present in Anne’s system were from prior use, but she didn’t have anything active in her system at the time of the crash.

“Cannabinoids were detected in the urine” but not in her blood test. This “is consistent with prior use but not at the time of injury,” the report states.

So, basically, drugs were not the cause of her accident.

There were reports that Anne also had Fentanyl in her system — but that was determined to be from treatments administered while she was at the hospital.

According to the coroner, the official cause of Anne’s death was inhalation and thermal injuries (burns).

That doesn’t explain how her car ended up crashing into the home, but it explains why she eventually succumbed to her injuries.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this incredibly difficult time.

  • Here’s How You Can Play The ‘Mystery String Challenge’ With Your Entire Family This Holiday Season

Here’s How You Can Play The ‘Mystery String Challenge’ With Your Entire Family This Holiday Season

I’m going to be honest, I’m a sucker for Party Games.

But, when those Party Games are Christmas themed — stop it right now!! Gah!! I’m obsessed.

This year, my brother and his family are driving in from Texas, and you better bet that I have all kinds of Christmas games planned for our Holiday endeavors.

One Christmas game that I’m super stoked to play is the Mystery String Challenge.

What is the Mystery String Challenge, you ask?

It’s super easy to set up.

The hardest part is choosing the prizes — but that’s secretly my favorite part.

Money, cookies, gift cards, movie tickets, a cool mug, noise-canceling earbuds — you can choose anything you want!

    Amazon

So, you choose a bunch of prizes — one for each person playing the game.

You want to put each prize on a paper plate, and attach a pretty long string to each plate.

Then, you’re going to thread those strings up through an upside down cup — like a Solo cup — that you’ve poked a hole in.

To play the game, each person chooses and pulls a string out of the top of the cup.

The lucky player gets to keep whichever prize moves when they pull the string.

    Fun, right?!? Everyone wins!!

Another game we LOVE to play, and you better bet we are playing it this Christmas, is the Saran Wrap Game. If you haven’t played it, you HAVE to check it out!!

  • I Was Today Years Old When I Learned What The Lever On The Tape Dispenser Is For

I Was Today Years Old When I Learned What The Lever On The Tape Dispenser Is For

Seriously. How did I never know this.

It seems so obvious now that I’ve seen it.

How many times have you struggled with the dang tape, trying to find the beginning of the roll?

I can tell you, I’ve mangled a roll or two in my lifetime, trying to get the flipping roll of tape started.

But, did you know that the tape manufacturers actually tried to make it easy for us.

It would have been really nice if they would have put the instructions on the actual roll, so incompetent users — like me — know what the heck we are doing.

But, no. They like to see us struggle. LOL!!

Did you know that little lever that hangs off the back of the roll of tape actually has a function.

    Life With Wes & Alison

I just thought it was to hold the tape on the roll, so it doesn’t fall off.

    Yeah, I was wrong.

Turns out, this lever has a function, and I’ve been using it totally wrong this entire time.

So, when you lose the beginning of the tape — which happens all the time, right? — you just hold down that little lever on the back of the tape dispenser.

    Life With Wes & Alison

Slide it along the tape until you find the start of the roll.

    Life With Wes & Alison

    Voila. It lifts right up.

    Life With Wes & Alison

No more tearing it off in pieces, wrecking your nail polish, and completely destroying half the tape to try to get it working properly again.

    Life With Wes & Alison

    Mind blown.

    Try it. It actually works!!

Miss Molly Moon Is Giving Everyone The Creeps With Her Strange and Unusual Videos

If you haven’t yet heard of Molly Moon, give it a minute. She’s bound to end up on your “For You” timeline soon.

Miss Molly Moon makes unique horror videos, and her weird-ass videos have garnered over 293,000 followers.

They’re not gruesome or scary horror videos. They are more like total weirdness and jump scares — things you won’t quite expect.

Most of Molly’s videos start with her catchphrase — “Excuse me, Sir” — said in a robotic voice, followed by small vignettes that look very similar to The Sims video games.

Many times, an action prompt window will appear on the screen. You see a mouse cursor click the prompt, and the video continues.

It looks like Molly’s interacting with someone playing a game — a game which stars her.

You will find yourself binge watching Molly Moon’s videos, unable to look away and not quite knowing what the heck is going on.

In each video, the ending has a bizarre twist — one that you didn’t quite see coming.

In one, she seems to be reverting to cannibalism. In another, you see a drawer full of men’s drivers licenses. And, in yet another, her mouth unhinges, and she appears to be eating your face.

All the comments on her videos are totally positive — people are LOVING them!
