Cheerios has a new answer to the cereal bag that gets rolled down, folded over and held shut with whatever clip is nearby: put a Ziploc seal right inside the box.

Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal is a new packaging option for both Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios. General Mills says it launched exclusively at Walmart.com on October 27, with a wider retail rollout planned in the coming months.

The bag stays in the box

This isn’t a separate storage container or a new cereal flavor. The resealable bag sits inside the regular cardboard box, so you can close it after pouring without transferring breakfast into another container.

According to the General Mills announcement, the top is designed to open only partway across, creating a pour spout. The bag then seals closed inside the box.

A built-in closure is a pretty sensible place to put the thing that keeps getting borrowed from the chip bag.

Look for the PantrySeal packaging

The new option is available in Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios. The Honey Nut Cheerios packaging has a blue band identifying the resealable Ziploc PantrySeal bag. Look for that label rather than assuming every box has the new closure.

The brands say the packaging is designed to help keep cereal fresh longer. That is their product claim, not a freshness test we have conducted.

For the initial release, General Mills directs shoppers to Walmart.com. The announcement does not give an exact date for the broader store rollout, so this is not a claim that every cereal aisle already has the new boxes.
