A steam-train ride and trick-or-treating in the same outing is a pretty solid pitch to a kid who already waves at every train.

Harvest Haunt at the Colorado Railroad Museum runs October 17–18, 2026, in Golden. The online child ticket is $7 for ages 2–17, and that includes both admission and a train ride.

This is a daytime event. Activities and trains run from 10 a.m.–3 p.m., so the Halloween costume can get another outing without adding a late night to the plan.

A real steam locomotive does the pulling

The museum says a coal-burning Colorado steam locomotive will pull the event’s trains. Around the grounds, there’s trick-or-treating, a hay-bale maze, the Olde Railroaders Silly Graveyard and haunted railcars the museum describes as “not-so-spooky.” Costumes are encouraged.

That sounds like a better fit for a train-loving child than choosing an event just because it has the biggest scare factor. The ride gives the day a main attraction, with Halloween activities around it.

Buy online if you can

The museum’s 2026 pricing policy makes advance planning worth actual money:

  • Online admission plus a ride: $17 adults, $15 seniors ages 60+ and $7 children ages 2–17
  • At the gate: $22 adults, $20 seniors and $12 children
  • Museum members and children under 2: Free, according to the event listing

For two adults and two ticketed children, the listed ticket prices add up to $48 online versus $68 at the gate. That’s a $20 difference before any checkout charges or food purchases.

Harvest Haunt uses the combined admission-and-ride ticket; the museum says a separate admission-only purchase isn’t offered for this special event. Food and treats are available to buy.

The museum is at 17155 W. 44th Avenue in Golden. Grounds open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m., but the event activities finish at 3. Choose your departure through the official ticket link and arrive 30 minutes before it for parking and check-in.
