Home Depot’s little red-and-green Holiday Train is a December project, but the signup date is in November. The retailer lists November 7, 2026, as the registration-opening date for its free December 5 Holiday Train Kids Workshop.

Put both dates on the calendar. November 7 is the day to check registration; December 5 is the day to build. And if you see a Christmas Car Ornament while you’re looking, that’s a separate project with a November date.

When do you sign up for the Holiday Train?

Start with Home Depot’s Kids Workshops page. Its Holiday Train listing gives November 7 as the registration-opening date, but it does not list an opening hour.

Choose your own store and check the workshop name and date before submitting: Holiday Train, December 5, 2026. A general “Register Now” button can lead to other workshops, so the button alone doesn’t tell you the train is available at your location.

If the train isn’t in your store’s workshop choices, check again later or contact that store before making plans. The national schedule doesn’t confirm local openings or available kits.

The Christmas Car Ornament is a different workshop

Home Depot lists the Christmas Car Ornament for November 21, 2026, with its own registration button. Signing up for that project is not a signup for the December train.

The retailer’s photos make the difference easier to spot: the train has a green cab, red body and wheels. The ornament is a car with a Christmas tree on top. Check the project name, too, especially if your child already has a favorite.

What to expect on December 5

Home Depot’s free in-store Kids Workshops are designed for ages 5–12, with a parent or guardian there to help.

Home Depot says workshops start at 9 a.m. and kits usually take about 30 minutes to complete. Check your selected store’s details when registering.

Plan to arrive early. Supplies are limited, and Home Depot’s registration form specifically warns that it cannot guarantee a kit for every participant. A registration confirmation is useful; it isn’t a reason to save the trip for the last few minutes.
