Jeni’s newest fall ice cream starts with something you’re more likely to spot under an oak tree than in the freezer aisle: actual acorns.
Appalachian Acorn Pie pairs ice cream made with foraged acorn flour and a graham cracker swirl. The brand spent five years developing it, which is quite a commitment to a scoop.
What does acorn ice cream taste like?
According to Jeni’s October 1 announcement, the flavor is sweet and nutty, with notes the company compares to hazelnut, coconut and chestnut.
The official product page describes acorns milled into flour and folded into the ice cream, with natural flavoring and a salty-sweet graham cracker swirl. So the acorns are part of the base; the graham cracker brings the pie-crust element.
If the name had you picturing a pint full of whole acorns, that clears things up considerably.
Why it took five years
Jeni’s says its early international sources for acorn flour fell through. The company then partnered with Route 9 Action Network, an agricultural cooperative in Carroll County, Ohio, to help develop a local supply.
The acorns were foraged and processed, then sent to a nearby Amish farm to be milled into flour. Jeni’s says keeping that part of the project moving involved letters, a community phone and in-person visits.
That is a fairly elaborate route to the ice cream case, and it explains why this particular fall flavor took a little longer than a seasonal label swap.
Where to find Appalachian Acorn Pie
The limited-edition flavor launched October 1, 2026, at Jeni’s scoop shops nationwide and online, while supplies last. The brand has not announced a fixed end date.
You can check the current online listing or find a nearby location through Jeni’s scoop-shop directory. Check with your shop before making a special trip; the national announcement does not guarantee stock at every location.
For more seasonal treats, our fall food and drinks guide has the apple, pumpkin and pecan options, too.
