There is a yearly race in North Carolina, and it is the SWEETEST race you’ve ever heard of. It’s called the Krispy Kreme Challenge, and just the name makes me say, ‘How do I sign up?!?’

This is the sixteenth year of the challenge, and it just keeps growing bigger! In 2019, alone, there were over 5,200 people who accepted the challenge to fight this not-so-harrowing battle. But, how does it work?

Participants begin the Challenge at the Memorial Belltower on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. Runners then travel 2.5 miles through historic downtown Raleigh to the Krispy Kreme located at the intersection of Peace and Person Streets, where they attempt to consume one dozen original glazed doughnuts. The hardest part of the Challenge awaits them as they run 2.5 miles back to the Memorial Belltower.

Yes, you read that right — CONSUME ONE DOZEN GLAZED KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUTS. I would do this just because it sounds DELICIOUS, but what makes this race EVEN BETTER — All proceeds go to UNC Children’s Hospital in Raleigh, NC.

Krispy Kreme AND helping kids. YES, PLEASE!

Your generous donation to the UNC Children’s Hospital through the Krispy Kreme Challenge will help children and families get the care that they need. Donations can help fund anything from a teddy bear for a child waiting treatment to specialty training equipment for hospital nurses and doctors.

Well, I can’t say ‘NO,’ now! It’s for the kids, afterall. The kids, and the doughnuts. But, mostly the kids.

What if you can’t make it to Raleigh to run in this one-of-a-kind tasty challenge?

Never fear. You can run it from afar! Just sign up, plot a course, and go for it! All Virtual Races are done at your own leisure. You don’t have to run it on race day. In fact, they suggest you do it early, and send in pictures to be featured on the Krispy Kreme Challenge Website.

It’s more fun with a buddy, so grab your bestie, and get to running. Remember, not only do you get to eat a heck-ton of doughnuts, you get the chance to help kids in the process. I can’t think of a better reason to run five miles!

What if you don’t want to eat the donuts? That’s okay, too! You can sign up as a Casual Runner. You will get a dozen donuts when it’s over, and you can eat them whenever you want.
