What did we ever do before Alexa, right?

I use Alexa for everything from getting the weather, to word definitions, to settling debates with my husband, to help with recipes, and I even get my news from this little smart device.

My kids LOVE to use Alexa to tell jokes — ’cause she’s got them all! Trust me, I hear them all. day. long.

Besides verbally talking to us, did you know that she also communicates through color? You may have noticed your Alexa blinking or pulsing red, blue, green, yellow, purple, white, or orange, but you had no idea why the heck you were getting said light show.

Don’t worry, we are here to help with each color, and what Alexa is trying to tell you!

Why is my Alexa Glowing Green?

There are two types of green lights that your Alexa device might show: A pulsing green light, and a spinning green light.

A pulsing green light means that you have an incoming call, or that someone wants to “drop in.” You can choose to either accept or decline this message by simply speaking to Alexa.

A spinning green light means that you are actively on a call. You don’t need to do anything, it will stop spinning once the call is over.

Why is my Alexa Pulsing Yellow?

A yellow light that pulses on and off is Alexa trying to tell you that you have a notification or message.

You can simply say, “Alexa, what is my notification?” and then she will answer you.

A LOT of times, this is Amazon telling me that a shipment is on the way. Be careful here, because if it’s a gift, you don’t want the recipient to hear what they are getting — she WILL inadvertently tell them.

Why is my Alexa Glowing Blue?

If your Alexa is spinning with a blue color, she is currently in the middle of thinking — or processing your request, if you want to get all technical.

She will also spin blue when you are powering her up.

Why is my Alexa Glowing White?

This one is easy. The white light indicates at what volume you are listening to Alexa.

So, if you say, “Alexa, volume up” you will notice the white light grows just a tad bit, and vice-a-versa.

This shouldn’t happen all too often. A red light means that Alexa’s microphone has been turned off, and she can’t communicate with you.

In simple terms, she is ignoring you. Ha!

Why is my Alexa Glowing Purple?

This can mean one of two things. Either there was a problem setting up the WiFi, or your Alexa is in “Do Not Disturb” mode.

Correct the problem, and she will be happy.

Why is my Alexa Glowing Orange?

Orange is the bane of my existence in the world of Alexa. Besides the spinning yellow light, orange is the color that I tend to see the most!

An orange light means that Alexa is trying to connect to the wireless network. The wireless SUCKS in my house, so we tend to see a LOT of orange.

If you have good wireless in your house, this shouldn’t be a problem all too often.

Let us know if this helped you. What has your Alexa been trying to tell you?
