I don’t know about y’all, but my cooling bill is OUTRAGEOUS this summer. We are home a whole lot more, so we tend to keep the air conditioner on more.

I had to come up with some ways to lower my electricity bill, while still maintaining a cool living environment. I was literally throwing money away every month on our cooling bill.

Ways To Cut Your Cooling Costs

Adjust That Thermostat:

When you go to bed at night, bump the thermostat down to a comfortable level. I know I can’t sleep when it’s hot. Maybe you are the same.

Then, during the day, bump the thermostat up. Researchers have said you should keep your house at 78 degrees, but that’s just crazy talk! I take the temperature up to about 72 degrees.

Use a Fan:

Fans use a LOT less energy than an air conditioner. That equates to a lower electricity bill, if you utilize fans to move and circulate that air.

When I am working at my desk — which is MOST of the day — I keep a small fan pointed at my torso. This helps keep me cool during the day.

The kids each have tower fans in their rooms. If it starts to get too warm for them in the house, they just turn on their fans. Just circulating that stagnant air will do wonders to keep you cooler!

Invest In Sun Shade Screens For Your Windows:

Place these screens (or any sun shade screen) on your windows that get direct sunlight. These shades will block a lot of the sun’s rays, and will cut down on the amount of heat getting into your house, thereby cutting down the amount of money you have to spend to cool the house down.

Invest In Some Good Shades:

This can be in the form of curtains that block the sun (I like the blackout kind), or a vinyl shade that rolls up when you need it to. You can roll it down when the sun is out in full-force.

Check The Seals Around Your Doors And Windows:

I noticed light getting in through a couple cracks in the frame of my door. Where there are cracks, there is a breach in temperature control. I was letting the hot air in through the cracks in the door.

Some simple weather stripping, and a super cool draft stopper has made all the difference in keeping the house cooler.

Maintain Your Air Conditioner, And Change That Filter:

We had a situation at our house where the air conditioner was running CONSTANTLY. It simply would NEVER get cool enough to shut off.

Turns out, the problem was that our filter for the air conditioner was so thick with dog hair, it was like throwing a big old blanket over the unit. It eventually burned out, and we had to get a whole new system. Don’t be us.

Remove Plants And Debris From Around AC Unit:

One really quick way to improve the efficiency of the air conditioner, is to go check the intake on the unit. Sometimes, dirt, leaves, weeds, bugs, and other things will gum up the works, and cause the air conditioner not to work as well.

Make sure you are checking for that overgrowth of weeds and plants that can block the intake of the AC. You can HUGELY improve the working condition of your AC by keeping this area free of debris.

Close The Rooms You Are Not Using:

Have a guest bedroom or storage room that isn’t currently being used by anyone? Shut off the vents in that room, and shut the door.

This will improve the AC air flow to the rest of the house, and make the system work more efficiently. A more efficient system means less money on cooling costs.

If you think of any other ways to cut your cooling costs, I’m all ears. I’m willing to try almost anything that will help save money.
