Alicia Silverstone is back as Cher Horowitz and I am not okay

Okay, so I am standing in my kitchen and I see the headline and I actually said ‘AS IF’ out loud. To no one. Just to the air.

Alicia Silverstone is coming back as Cher Horowitz. Not a reboot. Not a remake with a different actress who we all pretend is fine. The actual, original, iconic, plaid-suit-wearing Cher. For a Paramount+ sequel series. And Cher is now a mom. With a teenager.

I don’t know whether to cry or immediately go dig out my old copy of the DVD. Probably both, honestly.

Why does this reboot actually feel different from the rest of them?

Most nostalgia reboots feel like someone at a studio looked at a spreadsheet and said ‘people liked this once, let’s do it again.’ That’s how you get reboots that nobody asked for, starring people who weren’t in the original, that exist purely to drain the goodwill out of something you loved.

This one is different. Alicia Silverstone is Cher Horowitz. There’s no version of Clueless that works without her — and I think Hollywood finally figured that out after the 2020 musical reboot attempt that we all collectively agreed to forget.

The fact that it’s a sequel instead of a remake is the smartest creative call they could have made. We’re not re-watching Cher figure out high school. We’re watching what happened after.

What’s the actual premise — Cher is a MOM now?

Cher Horowitz is now a mother dealing with her own teenager. Let that sink in for a second. The girl who famously could not pass her driver’s test. The girl who negotiated her grades like a hostage situation. The girl who thought Hait-ee was in Europe. She’s now the parent.

The poetic justice of that alone is worth the entire Paramount+ subscription.

There is so much comedic and emotional gold in that premise — watching someone who was legendarily, lovably oblivious as a teenager now try to parent a version of herself. If the writers room has any sense, they will lean into that contradiction hard.

What do we actually need this show to get right?

First thing: the tone. The original Clueless worked because it was sharp but never mean. Cher was ridiculous but you rooted for her. That warmth is the whole thing. If this show goes cynical or tries to be too self-aware in that exhausting modern-TV way, it’s going to lose what made the original feel like a hug.

Second: it needs to let Cher have actually grown up — not just sideways. We need to see who she became. Did she go into fashion? Law? Did she and Josh actually last? These are pressing questions that I have been sitting with for thirty years.

Third: the fashion. Obviously. According to Vogue’s extensive coverage of the original film’s costume legacy, costume designer Mona May built Cher’s wardrobe as a character unto itself. The new show has to honor that. Cher in her forties should still be dressed like she personally invented the concept of an outfit.

Is Alicia Silverstone actually the right person for this moment?

Alicia Silverstone has been weirdly, quietly cool for years in a way that doesn’t get enough credit. She never went away — she kept working, she stayed genuinely herself, she never did the thing where a former teen star implodes publicly for our entertainment.

She’s also talked openly about how much Cher meant to her and to audiences. That’s not nothing. When the person reprising the role actually cares about getting it right, you can feel it on screen.

And honestly? There’s something really powerful about watching a woman in her late forties be the lead of a major streaming show playing a character she originated as a teenager. That’s not common. That should be celebrated.

How wild is it that Cher’s kid is now the age Cher was in the original film?

This is the part that genuinely short-circuits my brain a little. The timeline works out that Cher’s teenager — if they’re around 15 or 16 — was born when Cher was in her early thirties. Which means we get to see the direct generational handoff of the most confident girl in fictional Beverly Hills.

Does the kid have Cher’s oblivious optimism? Her step-brother Josh’s moral compass? Some terrifying combination of both?

This is genuinely the most interesting character dynamic the show could explore, and I really hope they don’t waste it by making the teenager a generic ‘sullen Gen Z kid who won’t look up from their phone.’ Give us a character as specific and weird and lovable as Cher was in 1995.

What would actually make this bomb instead of brilliant?

Honest answer: recasting. If they bring in a bunch of new characters and sideline Silverstone to make room for younger faces, we’re going to feel that. This is her show. Let her carry it.

Also — and I say this with love — the temptation to make it comment on social media, influencer culture, and whatever Gen Alpha is doing will be real. And a light touch is going to serve them so much better than hitting us over the head with ‘see how much things have changed!’

The original Clueless was actually an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, and that’s part of why it has held up so well. There’s an actual story structure underneath the jokes and the clothes. The sequel needs the same thing — a real emotional through-line, not just vibes and nostalgia.

In my reaction to other streaming reboots that went sideways, I’ve talked about this before — the ones that survive are the ones that have something new to say, not just something old to remind you of.

So is this actually going to be good?

I think it has a genuinely better shot than most. The premise is smart. The lead is right. The nostalgia is real but the creative angle isn’t purely backward-looking.

And look — even if it’s only pretty good, we’re going to watch every single episode. You know that. I know that. Paramount+ definitely knows that.

But what do I know? I also thought that every Clueless Halloween costume I saw between 1995 and 2010 meant we all collectively understood this film was perfect. And yet some studios still tried to remake it without Alicia.

We don’t make those mistakes anymore. Apparently.

Cher Horowitz is back and she’s a mom now and I honestly think that’s the most relatable character arc anyone could have written for her. The girl who had everything figured out at sixteen, now completely unraveling because teenagers are chaos regardless of how many designer blazers you own.
