If you somehow missed the entire Backrooms era of the internet, congratulations on having a healthier algorithm than the rest of us.
For everybody else: A24’s Backrooms is now listed as a premiere in HBO Max’s U.S. app.
Yes. That Backrooms.
The movie came from Kane Parsons’ viral YouTube universe
The basic nightmare is simple: a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom, leading into the kind of endless beige maze that looks like an office building forgot how reality works.
A24 lists Kane Parsons as the director, with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve starring. Parsons created the original Backrooms YouTube universe as a teenager, and HBO Max’s press materials describe the feature as his first full-length film.
There is something especially rude about taking one of the internet’s most effective “what if fluorescent lighting was evil?” concepts and turning it into a whole movie, but here we are.
Where to check Backrooms on HBO Max
HBO Max’s U.S. app lists Backrooms as a premiere; you can check that listing here. The service’s Spanish press site announced a September 25, 2026 streaming date. Availability can vary by account and region, so check your own HBO Max listing before subscribing just for this movie.
A24’s own movie page also points viewers to digital purchase options including Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, and Fandango, depending on availability.
What is Backrooms actually about?
A24’s official synopsis is wonderfully unhelpful in the exact correct way: a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom.
That doorway is, obviously, not going somewhere normal.
If you have ever stared at an empty office hallway at night and thought, “This building feels wrong,” you already understand the assignment.
You can see the film details on A24’s official Backrooms page.
