The basic nightmare is simple: a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom, leading into the kind of endless beige maze that looks like an office building forgot how reality works.
A24 lists Kane Parsons as the director, with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve starring. Parsons created the original Backrooms YouTube universe as a teenager, and HBO Max’s press materials describe the feature as his first full-length film.
There is something especially rude about taking one of the internet’s most effective “what if fluorescent lighting was evil?” concepts and turning it into a whole movie, but here we are.

HBO Max’s U.S. app now lists Backrooms as a premiere; you can check that listing here. The announced streaming date was September 25, but availability can vary by account and region.

What is Backrooms actually about?
A24’s official synopsis is wonderfully unhelpful in the exact correct way: a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom.
That doorway is, obviously, not going somewhere normal.
