Josh Hartnett has a very good reason to stay out of the water. His new Netflix thriller, Below, arrives Thursday, October 8, with all six episodes landing at once.

A sea creature and no waiting a week to find out what happens next? That is a useful combination for an October watchlist.

The series follows Calvin Penney, a fisherman in a small Newfoundland town that becomes the target of something dangerous in the ocean. Netflix’s current weekly guide puts Below on its October 8 schedule and describes Calvin’s fight to protect both his family and the community around him.

The trouble gets personal. Calvin’s father died under mysterious circumstances decades earlier, and his son Wade starts experiencing disturbing symptoms as the town’s crisis unfolds. Calvin joins forces with marine biologist Fonda to investigate what is happening beneath the water.

Hartnett plays Calvin, Charlie Heaton plays Wade, and Mackenzie Davis plays Fonda. Ruby Stokes and Rohan Campbell also appear in the cast. Creator Jesse McKeown previously wrote for The Umbrella Academy.

There is real Newfoundland scenery behind the mystery, too. In Netflix’s July teaser coverage, Heaton described filming on the ocean and kayaking there. Hartnett prepared for the regional accent by listening to local radio conversations with fishermen. Those are unusually specific ways to get ready for a monster story.

Want a quick look before adding it to your list? Netflix’s title page has a one-minute, 10-second teaser and a two-minute, five-second trailer. The teaser dates to July, and Netflix published its full-trailer story in September.
