Two ponytails and a pair of scissors. That is a very short supply list for something you will be wearing on your head for the foreseeable future.
Brad Mondo’s DIY butterfly haircut is meant to create face-framing layers and movement while keeping a longer overall shape. The appeal makes sense: you want your hair to DO something, but you do not necessarily want to say goodbye to all of it.
The ponytails are doing different jobs
According to the guide on Mondo’s XMONDO website, the method starts with wet hair, a comb, hair-cutting scissors and two hair ties.
He divides the hair into front and back sections. The front ponytail sits near the forehead; the other goes at the highest point of the head. Those placements help create the different layers.
This is where watching the actual demonstration matters. Two ponytails sounds simple. Knowing exactly where to put them and how to hold the hair while cutting is the haircut.
Watch Brad Mondo’s butterfly haircut tutorial here. Watch it all the way through before you pick up the scissors, not with one ponytail already on the bathroom floor.
The blowout is part of the look
XMONDO’s instructions also include blending the front and back and styling the finished cut. Those swoopy layers in the reveal are not a promise that your hair will dry that way on its own.
That is worth considering before you commit. Do you want the haircut, or do you want the haircut plus the blowout? Both are valid. They are just different amounts of Tuesday morning.
Would we treat this as a foolproof haircut hack? Absolutely not. A tutorial cannot assess your existing layers or tell you exactly where you want the shortest pieces to land.
If that part feels like a guess, take the video to a stylist. You can like the result without personally supervising its construction.
And please, leave the scissors that open the frozen pizza alone.
