‘Buttered Saltine Crackers’ Are The Hot New Snack Trend Everyone Is Talking About
Buttered Saltine Crackers are the snack trend everyone is talking about right now. They are an easy 2-ingredient snack that you can make in seconds!
Buttered Saltine Crackers
I am not going to lie, until a few weeks ago, I had no idea Buttered Saltines were a thing.
I guess it could be that I never really had grandparents in my life to teach me this!
Apparently, this has been a thing for many years and the majority of people I have talked to know about this easy snack and ate them as a kid.
However, some were just as confused as I am but I have to say, I’ve tried it and it is DELICIOUS.
Well, whether you’ve tried it or not, Buttered Saltine Crackers have made a comeback as an easy and tasty snack you make it just seconds! Seriously, you need to try these!
Oh, and while you are at it, give our Christmas Crack a try (you can enjoy it anytime of the year).
How to Make Buttered Saltine Crackers
Ingredients:
- Saltine Crackers
- Butter – I like the sweet cream butter
How to Make Them:
Start by softening your butter just enough to smear them onto the cracker. If you don’t, you risk breaking the cracker.
Using a butter knife, smear a thin piece of butter onto the top the cracker.
Eat and enjoy!
Now, some people have even said you can flip the cracker upside down so the salt side hits your tongue and the other side is covered in butter. That is also delicious.
You can even put these on a cookie sheet and bake them for a few minutes to make them warm and then apply the butter so it’s a bit melty.
I have to say, I am sad that I just learned this tasty snack but I am so glad I did!

You need grandparents to have discovered this? Wait what? Lol…. ? this has to be a joke right?
Lol – the idea that not only is it some undiscovered secret, but that it might require instructions. Ugh.
No only was this a thing growing up, taking the leftover frosting from a cake and placing it between two saltines was and is the absolute best cookie in existence!! 🙂
@Stephen, we used the frosting on graham crackers as well.
@Jen, me, too! Best ever! ?
This is ridiculous. It’s like saying, “hey there’s this new taste treat–toast with butter!” Or “I just discovered this: if you add ice cubes to water, you get ICE WATER.” I mean, it’s hardly a culinary breakthrough. How about something a little more interesting.
Best enjoyed when topped with chicken noodle soup or chili!
As a woman in my late 30s, this was a snack of mine as a young kid.. my parents also had this for a snack from the time they were kids. This isn’t new or inventive.
Oh how I love this! My mom and my aunt always ate these crackers!n
Why? Less salt and sugar.
My mom put some tasty sauce on the cracker and topped with a dab of cheese and into the oven for what? 3 minutes!
It was the best!
Your kidding, right? “Hit me snack trend?” That’s like saying cars are the “hot new mode of transportation”. ??
We would dip them in out chicken soup !
Wait until she tastes them with peanut butter on top of the butter ?
I can’t believe anyone had to write it up as a recipe! I’ve always eaten them that way. Even better are oyster crackers filled with butter. My mom used to put marshmallows on saltine crackers and broil them til they were brown as a special treat.
@Beth Widdows, I was scrolling through to see if anyone would mention oyster crackers, lol. Yummy. A bit mor work, but pretty durn elegant!!
This is nothing new. I had this when I was a kid 50 years ago. Next hot trend will probably sliced bread!
My mother made this for me when I was a little girl but she would also put them in the oven to lightly toast (long before toaster ovens). Delish! Still my go to comfort food.
Not new! Been around for ages. Introduced to this snack by my grandmother who was introduced by her grandmother… This was a cheap affordable snack that hit the spot in a pinch!! My grandma would be 104 today… just thought people should know this new “discovery” is really an old delicacy:-)
You’ve GOT to be kidding! I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a saltine that hasn’t been buttered—with soup, chili or just plain. My mom always made us ‘toasted crackers’. Spread a little butter on the cracker, sprinkle with a little sugar and toast under the broiler. Best snack ever.
Nothing “new” about this. People have been doing this since saltine crackers were invented, which was in the early 1800’s.
Try buttered rye crisp crackers! Warm the crackers first and spread with sweet cream butter. Awesome snack!
Brittanie Pyper… this has to be satirical right?! You can’t honestly purport this journalist quality on the tableau of premium plus salted crackers and butter as a “new trend”… what has become of our “avocado toast” enthusiastic millennials?!
Blaming the fact you didn’t have grandparents to prep you said tasty treat with war,Ed soup is absurd… you sound like the poor white soul without a nanny to “bring you up”… could you be more out of your league in making a rhetoric about saltines and butter? This is the most absurd thing I’ve read in decades, and I’ve followed American politics for some time, so that tells you something. Here’s a tip, do a teeny tiny bit of research and you might find old ads, commentary, and the like about your topic of ignorance and then POST a “Did you know” article about MANY easy, cheap, homey, relevant ideas OF FOOD to give the next gen an idea of common sense meals they could easily achieve in their own kitchens… it’s not a trend or the next big thing… grow up.
@Lindsay Pringle, what is your problem ?
@Lindsay Pringle, well aren’t you slightly condescending?! Being kind is an important manner of bringing meaning to our own life and others’ life.
@Minnie, proof the internet can argue fiercely about literally anything no matter how small.
Miss Ma’am,
Perhaps this is a cultural thing but Black people have been eating butter on saltines FOREVER. Your article was posted in a Black women’s cooking group and we are laughing our butts off at your “discovery”. This is not a new “thing”. I’m not sure what’s funnier: your “discovery” of this new snack or the fact that you have actually written “instructions”. Girl bye!
@averill dorsett, it’s hilarious! This “new thing” has to be at least 60+ years old. I’m over 50 and ate these as a kid.
@averill dorsett,
LMFAO!! I agree with you 100%. This has also been a Hispanic thing since time eternal. And instructions? Just take the damn crackers and spread butter on them. If you can’t figure that out without instructions, you don’t need to be eating them LOL!!
@averill dorsett, I’m 51 years old and as white as the aforementioned crackers and ate buttered crackers as a kid too. I can’t believe people actually think this is new and wrote instructions for it! As I was reading this I kept thinking am I really reading THIS?! Lol
I used to do that but… I then put it in the oven and buttered would melt..Yummy
Make cracker sandwiches. Two slices of bread; mayo, miracle whip or dressing of your choice, 4 individual crackers (once upon a time, the 4 crackers were attached into a unit). Spread dressing on bread, place 4 crackers in a square, top with second slice of spread bread – voila, cracker sandwich. Very filling when you haven’t got $ for anything else.
@Janie P, I will be 55 this year yes thank you for reminding me they were connected! As everyone else is getting angry with this post I am finding the amazement and clean humor of it! It made me smile and giggle a bit! NEW AND IMPROVED SNACK IDEA!
This cracks me up!! I’ve been doing this for decades…but my twist on it is scraping it into a tub of something like “I Can’t Believe it’s not Butter”! ?
Haha! I am loving the gourmet plating 😀 My great grandma ate this during the Great Depression
I’m curious to know the age of the person who wrote this article because this little tasty treat has been around longer than I have and I’m 42, lol
There’s nothing “new” about this snack! LOL!!! Southerners have been eating this for decades!
@Janice,
For real!!! We have too in the Midwest, lol
@Janice, up north too!
