They say that people who decorate their house early for Halloween (or Christmas) are the happiest people alive, and I must be simply giddy!

We are quickly headed into my favorite three months of the year. In October — August, if we are being honest — my house turns into a scene from The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, and slides easily into a Christmas Town by the end of November.

I mean, you haven’t lived until you’ve put up a Halloween Tree, turned it into a Thanksgiving Tree, and finally, its magnum opus, it becomes a Christmas Tree on December 1st.

But, why do we love decorating our houses for these holiday seasons?

The answer is quite simple. It helps us reminisce about a time when we were younger, when things were magical, and when the holidays were a wonderous thing.

Remember the excitement you felt choosing your Halloween costume every year? That thrill you felt, transforming into a character from the depths of your imagination was the highlight of the fall season.

Remember believing in Santa Claus, and the excitement you felt when you walked into a room that was decorated with red, green, garlands, fluffy snow, and presents?

In a world full of stress and anxiety people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas (or Halloween) decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood.

Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas (or Halloween) decorations early extend the excitement!

It also might be a way to remember a time when we spent the holidays with those we love who have passed. A reminder that things were once pretty perfect.

For people who have lost a loved one, the holidays may serve as a reminder of happy times they had with that person in the past. Decorating early may help them feel more connected with that individual.

Decorating our houses, and turning them into a holiday nightmare or fairytale, might make us seem more friendly. There is something inviting and fun about a house that has transformed into a scene straight out of our imaginations.

Turning our houses into an imaginary wonderland might also help us deal with loneliness and anxiety. Again, it ties us back to a time when things might have been just a little less stressful and full of friends and family.

We often find comfort in the decorations. They allow us to escape the realities of life for a brief moment.

So, go ahead and dress your house up with all the wild and crazy decorations you want, as early as you want.

I’ll be right there with you, living my best life, and celebrating the seasons with every over the top decoration I can find.

When do YOU start decorating for the holidays??
