Disney Is Getting Their First Jewish Princess in Time for Hanukkah

Disney is out to make sure everyone feels included and I love it. I just read that Disney Is Getting Their First Jewish Princess in Time for Hanukkah and that makes my heart happy.

In an episode of Elena of Avalor that aired on December 6, they introduced Princess Rebecca, of the Ladino kingdom of Galonia who is a Jewish Princess.

Jamie-Lynn Sigler (who used to be Meadow Soprano on the HBO series The Sopranos) voices the Jewish princess.

In the episode titled “Festival of Lights,” Rebecca and her family are shipwrecked off the coast of Avalor while returning home to observe Hanukkah.

Elena welcomes them to her palace and invites them to celebrate the holiday and teach them about its traditions. Rebecca lights a Hanukkiah, the holiday candelabra, and she and her family tell the story of her people’s struggle and the miracle of the oil lasting eight days in the neir tamid.

This is a big deal because this is the first time EVER in Disney history that a Jewish princess has been seen or even mentioned.

“It has always been important to us on Elena of Avalor to showcase the diversity of Latin and Hispanic cultures. We decided to focus on Hanukkah and a part of the culture that we hadn’t yet represented on the show.”

Craig Gerber, the creator and executive producer of the series, said in an interview with Remezcla

While the episode aired on Disney a week ago, word is, the episode will be airing on Disney+ once the season is over and added to the streaming platform.
