Dollar Tree can make a tiny ice-cream-shaped lip gloss look like the best idea you’ve had all day. The packaging is adorable. The price feels low enough to take a chance. Into the basket it goes.
But cute packaging doesn’t get the final vote once you actually use something.
In a Facebook video about her Dollar Tree disappointments, creator Jennifer Lyn walks through the beauty aisle and points out six products or product groups she wouldn’t buy again. These are her opinions and reported experiences.
1. Ice-cream-shaped lip gloss
The Body Raves Ice-cream lip gloss is exactly the kind of tiny, adorable thing that could talk its way into a shopping basket. Jennifer’s complaint is the taste. The cotton-candy-scented packaging shown in her video looks sweet; she says the experience doesn’t live up to it.
2. Candy-themed lip gloss
Another cute tube, another pass from Jennifer. She shows the strawberry-scented Body Raves Candy lip gloss and says she dislikes both the taste and the applicator. If the little lollipop cap is what caught your eye, her review gives you something else to consider.
3. Pro Silk products
Jennifer says the smell puts her off the Pro Silk line, including its body lotion. The shelf she shows includes Peppermint Twist. She also acknowledges that other shoppers love these products, which makes this one especially dependent on your own fragrance preferences.
4. The boxed perfumes
The perfume display includes Le Mercerie boxes labeled Sage Marine and Rouge Royal. Jennifer isn’t impressed with the fragrances’ scent or staying power and says she would put her money toward another perfume. These are her reported impressions of the products in the video.
5. Ice-cream-flavored toothpaste
Jennifer isn’t a fan of most of the ice-cream toothpaste flavors she discusses—but vanilla gets a pass. The shelf shows Brush Buddies boxes in chocolate and mint chocolate chip, with vanilla visible below. That exception matters: this isn’t a blanket thumbs-down for every flavor.
6. Scented face-mask gift sets
Jennifer finds these masks overly fragranced. The sets shown include “Pop the Bubbly!” and “Cheers, Darling!” with cocktail-themed sheet masks. The gift-ready packaging might be the attraction, but her complaint is what they smell like once you use them.
Would you buy it without the cute packaging?
This is a shopping opinion worth comparing with your own preferences. Someone who loves a strong fragrance may have a completely different reaction from someone who wants everything barely scented.
The useful question is: am I buying the product, or am I buying the packaging?
If you’re tempted by a whole collection, trying one item first can spare you a drawer full of things you don’t enjoy. Especially with fragrance, a bargain that never gets used is still money spent.
And there’s a difference between deciding something isn’t for you and deciding an entire store isn’t worth shopping. Jennifer ends her video by saying Dollar Tree still has plenty of good finds.
For another aisle to explore, we’ve also put together a guide to Dollar Tree bathroom cleaning supplies.
