I didn’t know the earth star chakra existed for an embarrassingly long time. I was over here obsessing over my root chakra like it was the whole basement of my energy system — turns out there’s a sub-basement. Nobody told me.
The earth star sits about 12 to 18 inches below your feet. It’s the anchor point that connects your entire energetic body to the actual planet. When it’s blocked, it doesn’t announce itself dramatically. You just feel like nothing is landing. Like you’re living slightly above your own life and can’t figure out how to come down.
Once you know what to look for, you can’t unknow it. So. Let’s do this.
What even is the earth star chakra?
The earth star — also called Vasundhara — is the eighth chakra, and it operates outside your physical body entirely. It’s a transpersonal chakra, which means it exists below you in your etheric field rather than inside you, but it absolutely affects how grounded, stable, and present you feel every single day. Think of it as the root beneath the root.
Without a clear earth star, your root chakra is essentially floating. You can meditate, do the affirmations, burn the candles — and still feel like your stability has a hole in it. That hole is usually down there in the earth star, and most people never think to look.

How is a blocked earth star different from a blocked root chakra?
A blocked root chakra tends to show up as fear — fear about survival, money, safety. It’s reactive and loud. A blocked earth star is quieter and deeper. Less fear, more disconnection. Like you’re too untethered to even locate what you’re afraid of.
If your root chakra is your foundation, your earth star is the bedrock under that foundation. You can work on the foundation all day. If the bedrock is cracked, nothing stays level. That’s the difference — and it’s why people can do years of root chakra work and still feel unmoored.
What are the 7 signs your earth star chakra is blocked?
A blocked earth star rarely announces itself with one dramatic symptom. It’s a pile of small things that all point in the same direction.
1. Chronic ungroundedness. Floaty. Scattered. Head always somewhere else. You forget basic things, lose track of time, and can’t finish what you start even when you genuinely want to.
2. Anxiety with no identifiable source. Not situational anxiety — a low hum of dread that doesn’t attach to anything. It’s just there. You can’t argue yourself out of it because there’s nothing to argue against.
3. Financial instability that loops. Money comes in and immediately disappears. Plans fall apart. There’s a “nothing is building” quality to everything, like you’re filling a container that has no bottom.
4. Physical symptoms in the lower body. Heavy legs, cold feet, numb feet, knee problems, or a deep fatigue that makes you feel like you’re dragging through sand. Your body is trying to tell you something.
5. Feeling like you don’t belong anywhere. Not dramatically — just a quiet disconnection from your home, your city, your own life. Like you’re visiting your own existence.
6. Sleep that doesn’t restore you. You wake up tired. Your body can’t fully drop into rest because there’s no energetic ground to land on. You’re hovering even when you’re horizontal.
7. The gap between intention and action is enormous. Great ideas. Terrible follow-through. And not because you’re lazy — because you genuinely don’t know why nothing is sticking.
If you checked four or more of those, your earth star is asking for attention.
What causes the earth star chakra to block?
Some of this is lifestyle. Some of it goes deeper than that.
Spending most of your life indoors, on screens, on concrete — your body literally never touches the earth. Chronic stress that keeps your nervous system elevated indefinitely. Living somewhere that doesn’t feel like home. Trauma that made it feel genuinely unsafe to be present in your body or in the world.
And then there’s the ancestral piece — which tends to surprise people. The earth star connects to lineage. If your family history includes displacement, instability, or collective trauma — literal or metaphorical uprootedness — that can show up in your earth star. It’s one of the reasons earth star work can get unexpectedly emotional even when all you’re doing is sitting outside barefoot. You’re not just clearing your stuff. Sometimes you’re clearing old stuff that was handed down.
I’ve done a lot of deep dives into chakra work and what actually moves the needle on this — the ancestral layer is real, and it’s one people skip.

How do you actually unblock the earth star chakra?
You get physical about it. The earth star doesn’t respond to thinking or journaling — it responds to actual contact with the earth and to practices that signal to your nervous system that it’s safe to land.
Walk barefoot outside. Grass, dirt, sand, rock — any of it counts. This is called earthing, and research published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health found that direct contact with the earth’s surface can actually shift your body’s electrical state. Not just woo. Real physiology. Go outside and take your shoes off.
Use grounding stones. Black tourmaline, hematite, smoky quartz, black obsidian — these are the earth star’s crystals. Hold them, place them below your feet during meditation, keep them near your bed. If you want crystals that are actually chosen for energetic purpose and not just aesthetic, check out what I’ve been curating over at Elementually.
Visualize roots extending below your feet. I know how that sounds. Do it anyway. Sit still, close your eyes, and imagine a root system extending from below your feet — down through the floor, through the soil, through rock, all the way to the earth’s core. Breathe slowly through that image. It works whether or not you understand why it works.
Get your hands dirty. Gardening. Clay. Cooking from scratch. Anything that puts you in physical contact with the material world. Your earth star responds to that.
Eat dense, earthy food. Root vegetables especially. Beets, sweet potatoes, carrots, parsnips. There’s a reason they feel grounding — they come from the ground. That’s not metaphor, that’s just how it works.
If you’ve been experimenting with crystals and grounding tools and want a framework for where to start, the earth star is honestly the place most people should begin and almost no one does.
Can you tell if your earth star is blocked without a practitioner?
Yes — and here’s a quick self-check. Stand barefoot if you can, close your eyes, and notice whether you feel any awareness below your feet. A healthy, open earth star tends to feel like a warm magnetic pull downward. A comfortable weight. A blocked one usually feels like nothing. Just air. Just absence.
Another tell: if meditation makes you more anxious instead of less — if sitting still makes your brain louder — that’s a sign you’re not anchored at the earth star level. You’re trying to quiet a house that has no foundation. Fix the foundation first.
The basics of grounding meditation and why some people feel worse before they feel better is something I’ve talked about before, and it applies directly here.
The earth star chakra is one of those things where once you know it exists, a lot of old confusion starts making sense. That floaty nothing-is-sticking feeling. The exhaustion sleep doesn’t fix. The sense that you’re orbiting your own life instead of actually living it.
That’s not a character flaw. That’s not a personality problem. That’s just a chakra that needs some dirt.
Go outside. Take your shoes off. Eat a sweet potato. It’s less mystical than it sounds — and somehow that’s exactly what makes it work.
