The heart chakra, or Anahata, is the fourth chakra in the modern seven-chakra system. It is usually associated with love, compassion, connection, grief, forgiveness, and the way we relate to ourselves and other people.
That is the spiritual framework. It is not a physical organ layered over your actual heart, and Western science does not recognize chakras as anatomical structures.
You can still use the symbolism. You just do not have to make every bad date a cardiovascular energy emergency.
What does the heart chakra mean?
In modern chakra traditions, the heart chakra is called Anahata and is placed around the center of the chest. It is commonly linked with love, compassion, empathy, connection, and emotional openness.
Healthline describes the heart chakra as representing our ability to love and connect with other people. Cleveland Clinic explains the larger chakra system as a South Asian spiritual and wellness framework rather than a set of structures recognized by Western science.
What color is the heart chakra?
The heart chakra is most commonly associated with green. Some modern traditions also use pink for love and compassion.
The color is symbolic. Wearing green will not medically “heal” your heart, and disliking green does not mean your chakra is blocked.
What does a “blocked” heart chakra mean?
In spiritual language, people may use that phrase when they feel closed off, lonely, resentful, guarded, disconnected, or unable to give and receive affection comfortably.
Those feelings can also come from very ordinary human things: grief, betrayal, stress, trauma, conflict, depression, or simply needing a boundary. A chakra interpretation can be a reflection prompt, but it should not replace therapy, medical care, or a needed conversation.
How do you work with the heart chakra?
- Notice where you are overgiving. Compassion is not the same thing as having no boundaries.
- Journal about what you are still carrying. You do not have to forgive on command, but naming resentment can be useful.
- Try a loving-kindness meditation. Keep it simple: wish yourself and someone else safety, ease, or peace.
- Use green or pink as a focus color. A candle, flower, crystal, clothing, or visualization can be symbolic without needing to be magical proof.
- Do something relational in the real world. Send the text. Apologize if you mean it. Make the boundary. Ask for help. Connection gets a lot less mystical when somebody actually answers the phone.
Does “opening” your heart chakra mean you should trust everyone?
Absolutely not.
Being loving does not require ignoring red flags, tolerating mistreatment, staying in unsafe situations, or granting access to somebody who has not earned it.
If anything, a grounded heart-chakra practice should make space for both compassion and discernment.
Is the heart chakra connected to the crown chakra?
They belong to the same modern seven-chakra framework, but they symbolize different themes.
The heart chakra centers on love and connection with self and others. The crown chakra is more commonly associated with spirituality, meaning, and connection beyond the individual self.

A simple heart chakra practice
- Sit somewhere comfortable.
- Put your attention on the center of your chest without trying to force a sensation.
- Take a few slow breaths.
- Ask: Where do I need more compassion, and where do I need a better boundary?
- Write down one answer for each.
- Choose one ordinary action you can actually take.
No green flash required.
The short version
The heart chakra is the fourth chakra and is spiritually associated with love, compassion, connection, and emotional openness. It can be useful as a framework for reflection, meditation, and relationship questions, while keeping the evidence line clear: chakras are spiritual concepts, not scientifically established physical structures.
