Holiday beauty season is here, which means perfectly normal lip balm has put on a pink party outfit and brought three tiny friends. I am listening.

Choose the gift before falling for the packaging
My shortcut: the $25 balm set for someone who already loves collecting lip colors; the $49 palette for someone who enjoys doing an eye look. A familiar category is a better starting point than an impressive-looking box. Check the shades they already reach for, then decide whether these add something they would want.
Neither gift needs to become an excuse to spend more than you planned. If your budget is $25, the lip set is the whole gift. Add a card and you are done. The palette makes sense when makeup is already their thing; it is a very specific present for somebody who normally skips eyeshadow.
