Colorado really will give you a lake full of witches on paddleboards, and somehow that feels like a perfectly reasonable way to spend a Saturday.

The witchy paddle at Quail Lake in Colorado Springs on October 3, 2026, had pointed hats, striped stockings, bright boards and fall color along the water. This is exactly the kind of colorful Colorado thing that makes living here feel a little magical.

And yes, I brought the spiderweb tights.

The witches traded broomsticks for paddleboards

The Witches & Ghouls Halloween Paddle was hosted by Dragonfly Paddle Yoga. The organizer called this its tenth annual gathering and welcomed paddleboards, kayaks and canoes for a free community paddle at Quail Lake.

The photos show people sitting together on a little cluster of colorful boards, with witch hats in every direction. Pink, yellow, orange and blue boards on the water. Red-and-white stockings. Purple-and-black stockings. A floppy hat that appears to have its own plans.

Halloween has a lot of very serious decorations. I appreciate a version where you can sit on a paddleboard in your costume and hang out.

A very Colorado kind of magic

One paddler went all in on purple, right down to the striped socks and the ruffles around a tall witch hat. Another stood on a blue board in a black dress, with the mountains behind her. There were yellow leaves along the shore and all that blue sky above the lake.

Adding witches to that view was a good decision.

And then there is the photo of a witch stretched out on a yellow paddleboard, hat still on, paddle resting across the board. Even the coven gets a break.

My own lake view came with spiderweb tights in the foreground and a bright pink board underneath. October attire, Colorado edition.

Keep a little room for the colorful stuff

I have already written about a simple paddleboarding afternoon at Quail Lake. This was the Halloween version, and the costumes made an already pretty place feel wonderfully ridiculous.

This is the Colorado I love. The pretty lake is great. The people showing up in witch hats make it magical.
