‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Shatters The Record For Tom Cruise Movie Openings
I may not be his biggest fan, but that hasn’t stopped Tom Cruise from having his best career opening day at the theater yet.
According to Variety, Top Gun: Maverick — which was originally slated to open June 2022 — had a GIANT 4-day opening! It shattered expectations, and garnered $156 million over the long Memorial Day holiday weekend.
And that’s JUST in the United States! Worldwide, the hit sequel to the beloved Top Gun made $248 million.
Not too shabby.
Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel 36 years in the making, shattered the earnings of Cruise’s other opening weekend films. That’s saying a lot, because Cruise has been in the movie-making business for a whopping 40 years!!
“Maverick” also secured the biggest debut in Cruise’s 40-year career, marking his first movie to surpass $100 million in a single weekend. “War of the Worlds,” which opened to $64 million in 2005, previously stood as Cruise’s biggest opening weekend, followed by 2018’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” with $61 million.

This film even beat out the film that held the record for Memorial Day opening record, which was previously held by Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, in 2007.

Now, I may not be Tom Cruise’s biggest fan — I haven’t even seen any of his movies from like the last 20 years.
(Side Note: Don’t even get me started on the Jack Reacher series. Have you read the books? He is NOT Jack Reacher.)
But, Top Gun: Maverick is going to break my Cruise-less streak.
I mean the OG Top Gun is a CLASSIC. There is no way I’m going to miss out on seeing the sequel.
I feel the need. The need for speed!

Now, as you might guess, the majority of the tickets sold for the Top Gun sequel belonged to people over the age of 35.
But, those tickets only counted for 55% of the traffic to Top Gun: Maverick this weekend.
The film has been hyped up for its amazing stunts and fun cameos.
Whatever the reason, Top Gun: Maverick is bringing in plenty of younger movie watchers.
Maybe it’s the fact that their parents wouldn’t shut up over the years about how freaking awesome Top Gun was back in the day. LOL!!
What do YOU think? Are you one of the many that hit up theaters for the opening weekend of Top Gun: Maverick?
