There are approximately one million ways to do Halloween.
You can be scary. You can be sexy. You can be a sexy version of something that absolutely did not need a sexy version.
But there is another category of Halloween costume that I think deserves way more respect: the deeply specific costume that is not sexy at all and somehow gives off the weirdest possible energy.
I’m not talking about costumes that are trying to be creepy. I mean the ones where you walk into a party, see a full-grown adult dressed as a frog or a traffic cone, and immediately have 14 questions about the person inside it.
These are the costumes that make me think, “Okay. So this was a choice.”
And honestly? I love them.
1. This Frog Costume Is The Entire Reason We Are Here
Tipsy Elves has a women’s frog costume that is basically a green zip-up jumpsuit with a padded frog belly, a frog hood and enormous attached frog hands.
Nothing about it is sexy. Nothing about it is scary.
But imagine walking into a Halloween party and this frog is already sitting on the couch.
No group costume. No pond theme. Nobody else is dressed as an amphibian.
Just frog.
Weird vibe: She knows something about the pond and she is not telling you.
2. The Caterpillar Is Somehow Even More Concerning
Tipsy Elves also made a women’s caterpillar costume with a fuzzy green body, plush legs and antennas.
Again: objectively pretty wholesome.
And yet I cannot imagine having a normal conversation with someone who has committed this hard to being a caterpillar.
Weird vibe: She keeps saying she is “working on herself” and you are starting to worry she means metamorphosis.
3. You Can Dress As An Entire Car Wash
Not a car wash employee.
Not someone holding a sign for a car wash.
The costume has blue and yellow fringe all over it plus a little car wash hat, and this is exactly the kind of thing I mean when I say the costume itself isn’t weird until you picture a human being standing silently in your kitchen wearing it.
Weird vibe: Absolutely going to brush against every person at the party whether they consented to the deluxe wash package or not.
4. The Light-Up Angler Fish Has Too Much Information
The light-up angler fish costume is sequined, has a giant fish hood and includes the little glowing lure that hangs over your head.
This is a very specific deep-sea commitment.
You could have been a cat. You could have been a witch. You chose a fish that lives where sunlight cannot reach.
Weird vibe: Has been waiting all year for somebody to ask about bioluminescence.
5. The Rubber Ducky Is Not Here To Explain Himself
Tipsy Elves’ rubber ducky costume is bright yellow, has an attached duck tail and comes with an enormous duck hood.
This feels less like a costume and more like the beginning of an extremely specific personality.
Weird vibe: Walked here from a bathtub and refuses to elaborate.
6. Being A Lobster Is A Very Personal Decision
There are so many animals available to you.
You can be a bunny. A cat. A bear. Even a dinosaur makes a certain amount of Halloween sense.
But the full lobster costume comes with giant integrated claws, a hood with antennas and the kind of bright red color that makes sure absolutely nobody misses the fact that you have chosen crustacean.
Weird vibe: Not a mermaid. Not a sailor. Just lobster.
7. The Fly Costume Feels Like A Social Experiment
The adult fly costume comes with wings and even a fly swatter.
I do not know why the fly has access to its own swatter. That feels threatening.
Weird vibe: Keeps hovering around the snack table in a way that is becoming less funny by the minute.
8. The “Cuddly Cockroach” Is A Phrase We Should Never Have Invented
HalloweenCostumes.com is currently selling something literally called the Cuddly Cockroach Costume.
It has a hood with giant bug eyes, little roach legs sticking out of the sides and wings.
I appreciate the attempt to put “cuddly” in front of cockroach, but I reject the premise.
Weird vibe: Your landlord has been trying to reach you.
9. A Giant Pigeon Is Different From A Bird Costume
There is something about dressing as a majestic bird that makes sense.
An eagle? Sure.
A peacock? Beautiful.
A pigeon?
That is an entirely different emotional experience. There are full adult pigeon costumes out there right now, including giant gray versions with the unmistakable city-bird head.
Weird vibe: Has already eaten something off the floor and is making intense eye contact near the patio.
10. A Traffic Cone Is Maybe The Purest Version Of This
HalloweenCostumes.com has an adult traffic cone costume that turns a human being into a giant orange cone with reflective-looking stripes and a face hole.
There is no backstory here.
You are infrastructure now.
Weird vibe: Has redirected foot traffic through the living room for reasons no one understands.
11. Corn Is Not A Costume. Until Apparently It Is.
The adult corn-on-the-cob costume is a giant foam-backed ear of corn with green husks and a tuft of fake corn silk on top.
Honestly, the commitment to the corn silk is what takes this from “funny” to “I need to know more about you.”
Weird vibe: Nobody invited a vegetable, but here we are.
12. The Potato Is Almost Too Normal, Which Makes It Worse
HalloweenCostumes.com also has a full adult potato costume in its current vegetable-costume lineup.
A potato does not have a recognizable personality. It does not have a cute little sound. It does not have claws or wings or a tail.
It is just a potato.
Which means if you dress as one, every ounce of the energy is coming directly from you.
Weird vibe: Planned this six weeks ago and has been waiting patiently.
13. The Two-Person Crab Requires A Level Of Coordination I Cannot Explain
The two-person crab costume puts two adults inside one enormous crab complete with giant claws, plush eyes and a mouth that can be puppeteered.
This is not a couples costume. This is a joint business venture.
Weird vibe: Two people made a spreadsheet before arriving at the party.
14. And Finally: The Light-Up Dumpster Fire
The light-up dumpster fire costume is exactly what it sounds like: a wearable dumpster with glowing flames.
Technically this one is a joke.
But if someone walks into a party alone dressed as a light-up dumpster fire and does not immediately explain the situation, I am still putting them in this category.
Weird vibe: Self-aware, but perhaps too self-aware.
So What Makes A Halloween Costume Weird Instead Of Just Funny?
I think it comes down to specificity.
A funny costume tells a joke. A weird costume raises questions.
Why a frog? Why a pigeon? Why did two adults agree to become one crab?
And that is why these are so much better than another costume that is just “regular thing, but make it sexy.”
Give me the woman in the frog suit. Give me the traffic cone. Give me an inexplicably confident potato standing next to the punch bowl.
Halloween is supposed to be weird.
Let it be weird.
