There’s a lot of heavy energy floating around right now. You don’t need me to tell you that. And if you’ve been feeling it inside your house — that thick, stagnant, something-is-off feeling — a cleanse is probably overdue.

Most people Google this and land on the same answer: burn sage. And look, I get it. Smudging is everywhere. But white sage is being overharvested to the point of serious ecological concern, it holds deep ceremonial significance for Native American cultures, and also — your landlord is going to lose their mind.

The good news is there are a lot of ways to move bad energy out of your space that don’t involve smoke, cultural appropriation concerns, or a fire alarm going off at 2am.

Why is sage such a problem to begin with?

White sage is being harvested faster than it can grow back, and that’s not a small issue. According to reporting from the LA Times, wild white sage populations in Southern California are under serious pressure from commercial overharvesting driven almost entirely by New Age demand. And on top of the environmental piece, smudging with white sage is a sacred ceremonial practice — not a vibe. Using it casually because it showed up on your Pinterest board is worth thinking twice about.

There’s also just the practical stuff. Smoke alarms. Lease agreements. Asthma. If any of those apply to you, sage was never going to work anyway.

Does a floral bowl actually do anything?

A fragrant floral bowl is genuinely one of my favorite cleansing methods — and I say that as someone who has tried most of them. You mix lavender and thyme (fresh or dried, doesn’t matter) with sea salt and hot water in a bowl, and you stir slowly. The act of making it is half the point. It’s intentional. It forces you to slow down.

Add a few drops of lavender essential oil or a squeeze of lemon if you want to deepen the scent. Let it cool — open a window while you wait, let the air move through. Then carry the bowl through each room, setting it down in spots that feel heavy or stuck. Leave it in a room for a few hours if somewhere feels particularly off.

It sounds simple because it is. That’s the whole thing.

Can sound really clear negative energy from a space?

Sound vibrations are one of the oldest cleansing methods there is — this isn’t a new concept someone invented for Instagram. The idea is that stagnant, heavy energy has a low vibration, and sound physically disrupts it. Think about how certain music changes the entire atmosphere of a room. Same principle.

Instruments that work well for this:

  • Singing bowls
  • Bells or chimes
  • Tuning forks
  • Drums
  • Cymbals or gongs

Your voice counts too. Chanting, humming, repeating affirmations out loud — all of it works. Walk through each room, let the sound bounce off the walls and corners, and pause between rounds. You’re not just making noise. You’re intentionally shifting the energy in the space.

I’ve done a whole sound cleanse after a particularly rough week and felt the difference immediately. It makes sense because sound is literally vibration moving through matter.

How do you use salt to cleanse a house?

Salt absorbs negative energy — that’s the short version. It’s been used as a purifier across cultures and centuries, which is part of why it feels so reliable. You don’t need a fancy ritual. You just need salt.

A few ways to use it:

  • Place small bowls of salt in the corners of rooms you want to cleanse, and leave them there for 24 to 48 hours
  • Mix salt with water in a spray bottle and mist doorways and windows
  • Draw a line of salt across a threshold to keep negative energy from entering
  • Grind salt with dried herbs in a bowl for a combined approach

When you’re done, dispose of it — down the drain or in the trash. The salt has done its job. Don’t reuse it.

If you want something a little more ambient, a Himalayan salt lamp pulls double duty — it looks beautiful, gives off a warm low light, and does the cleansing work passively just by sitting there.

What crystals work best for house cleansing?

Clear quartz is the one I’d start with if you’re new to crystals for cleansing. It’s straightforward — place one in each corner of a room and it disperses negative energy while keeping the space protected. It’s also easy to find and not expensive, which matters.

Black tourmaline is worth knowing about too. It’s a heavy-duty protective stone — good for near doorways and entry points if you want to stop bad energy from coming in at all rather than just clearing it once it’s there. And selenite is another solid option — it’s self-cleansing, which means unlike most crystals, you don’t have to regularly clear it yourself.

If you’re curious about going deeper with crystal work, I wrote about it more in my post on crystals for anxiety and healing.

Are there any other methods worth trying?

A few that don’t get talked about enough — houseplants are genuinely underrated for this. Living plants shift the energy of a space just by being alive in it. Spider plants, peace lilies, snake plants — they’re also air purifiers, so you get a practical and an energetic benefit at the same time.

And honestly — decluttering. I know it sounds like I’m about to tell you to Marie Kondo your bathroom cabinet, but stagnant physical stuff creates stagnant energy. You don’t have to go full minimalist. Just clear out the spaces that feel heavy and watch what shifts.

For more on building a full protection practice, my guide to protection spells and intuition work goes into a lot more of this.

You don’t have to burn anything to cleanse your space. That’s really the whole point here. Salt, sound, crystals, a bowl of lavender water — these are all real methods with real history behind them, and none of them require a smoke alarm or a cultural conversation.

Pick one and actually do it. Don’t overthink the process. The intention you put into it matters more than doing it perfectly.

And if you’ve been sitting with that heavy, something’s-not-right feeling in your home for a while — today’s a good day to do something about it.
