We’ve known for a while that it was coming, but this week we said goodbye to Dr. Meredith Grey.

Let me just start by saying, there will be spoilers. If you don’t want to know, turn back now.

We are so used to departures from the show being traumatic and final.

It started with George getting hit by a bus, Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan dying from that horrible plane crash, and we can’t forget McDreamy.

I still can’t talk about Derrick’s death without tearing up.

But, our farewell to Meredith was — well — rather uneventful.

If you have been keeping up with the show, you know that Meredith has been dealing with a possible impending move.

Then, right before the show went on hiatus, Meredith’s house caught on fire.

As her last show starts, she is dealing with the aftermath of the fire, her move away from the city that she loves, and her failing relationship with Nick.

All pretty standard for a Grey’s Anatomy episode, right?

Only, this time, we are keenly aware that this is it for Meredith.

We kind of go the entire episode, waiting for a big BOOM, but we never get it.

At the end of the day, her colleagues throw her a going away party, Bailey and Webber struggle with the words to tell her goodbye, and Meredith tells Nick that she is choosing herself, her kids, and her career over a man.

I’m not going to beg you to love me.

Meredith Grey

Something that never would have happened with Derrick, right?

So, Meredith catches a plane, and we say goodbye.

Now, Nick DID try to make it to the airport before Meredith and the kids left. He wanted to profess his love, but he was just a bit too late.

He tries to call her before her plane takes off, but the signal is bad.

She ends up leaving.

Does this mean we will get another goodbye between the two in a future episode?

We will have to see.
