Phones at game night can actually be useful. Give everyone a ridiculous drawing prompt and suddenly that little screen has a better job than scrolling.
With a purchased Jackbox Party Pack, one person runs the game on a compatible device. Everyone else joins from a browser and uses their phone as a controller. Put the host’s screen where the whole group can see it, and you have the makings of a very silly evening.
Sort out the TV part first
Your phone is the controller. It does not replace the device running the game.
Jackbox’s platform guide explains the options: a computer, a supported console or certain TV devices. A laptop connected to the TV by HDMI is one route. Some TVs can run Jackbox directly, but compatibility depends on the model.
Choose the platform before buying. Jackbox says purchases do not transfer between platforms, so buying for a console and then deciding to use a laptop can mean buying again. That is an annoying way to spend the snack money.
For a purchased Party Pack, Jackbox’s setup instructions are straightforward:
- One host buys and installs the pack on a compatible device.
- Launch the pack and choose a game to open its lobby.
- Players visit jackbox.tv in their phone browsers and enter the room code shown on the host’s screen.
- Once everyone has joined, start the game.
Only the host needs to own that Party Pack. The guests are joining the game, not buying their own copies.
Pick the game for the people on your couch
Check the individual game’s player range before inviting everyone. For example, Party Pack 11 contains five games, but its Legends of Trivia supports one to six players while Suspectives takes four to eight. A pack does not have one universal player limit.
Kids joining? Read Jackbox’s family-friendly guide and check the chosen game’s settings. Many games have a filter; some do not. Trivia Murder Party still has a murder theme. A cute cartoon is not a permission slip.
Playing from different houses? The host also needs to share the game’s video and audio. Sending a room code alone will not give your friends the shared screen they need.
