Some party desserts ask you to sculpt fondant until you lose the will to live. These Princess Leia cupcakes ask you to stick chocolate sandwich cookies to the sides of a cupcake and call them hair buns. Correct.

What you need for Princess Leia cupcakes

  • Cooled cupcakes, homemade or from a mix
  • White frosting
  • Black decorating icing with a small round piping tip
  • A drop of red food coloring to tint a little white frosting pink, or tiny heart candies for the mouth
  • Chocolate sandwich cookies

StarWars.com has highlighted justJENN’s Princess Leia cupcakes with Oreo side buns. Once you see it, an Oreo is going to look a little like a tiny hairpiece.

How to decorate them

1. Start with a completely cooled cupcake. Spread a smooth layer of white frosting across the top. This becomes Leia’s face, so take it all the way to the edge.

2. Pipe the hair. Use black decorating icing to draw a center part, then fill in the hair along the upper edge of the cupcake. Add two small dots for the eyes.

3. Give her a mouth. Mix a little white frosting with a drop of red food coloring, then pipe a small pink smile. A tiny heart candy works, too. Keep it simple. The hair buns are doing most of the character work here.

4. Add the buns. Put a dab of frosting on each side of the cupcake liner and press on one chocolate sandwich cookie per side. If the white cream stripe is visible, cover that edge with a little black icing.

The tiny details that make this work

A small round piping tip gives you cleaner hair and eyes, but perfection is not the assignment. Princess Leia’s hairstyle is so iconic that the two cookie buns carry the whole design. If the icing line wiggles a little, congratulations: it still looks homemade in the charming way.

Servings: 24 Cupcakes

Ingredients

  • Box cake mix or your favorite homemade cake recipe
  • White Buttercream Frosting
  • Red food coloring
  • Oreo Cookies
  • Black Wilton Frosting
  • Heart Candies optional

Method

  1. Make cupcakes according to the directions on the box (or according to the directions of your recipe).
  2. Generously frost each cupcake with a thin layer of white icing.
  3. Using a thin writing tip (I used a #4) take your black icing, start one side of the hair first, from the center down. (You will want to create a middle part) Add the other side of the hair and then add the eyes.
  4. To make the mouth, use a small amount of the white frosting and add one drop of red food coloring to make pink. You can also use these heart candies to make a cute simple mouth if you have any on hand.
  5. For the hair buns, use a dab of icing to stick Oreos to the sides of the cupcake liner. To get rid of the ‘white line’ from the creamy center of the Oreo simply run a thin layer of black frosting down the center of each Oreo.
  6. Enjoy!!!

Notes

You don’t have to use Oreo’s. Any chocolate cookie will do!

Two cookies for her hair, one cupcake for her face. Finally, a party hairstyle I can manage.
