Category: Heavy Handed Advice

Heavy Handed Advice is exactly what it sounds like — opinions you didn’t ask for but probably need. This is the corner of the internet where I tell you what I’d tell my best friend, which is sometimes “you’re right” and sometimes “you’re being ridiculous.”
What kind of advice is on TTB?
Life stuff. Money stuff. Relationship stuff. Parenting stuff. The kind of advice that doesn’t come with a 17-step plan or a $99 download. Just honest takes from someone who’s made every mistake worth making and lived to write about it.
Who writes the advice posts?
I do. — blogger since the AOL days, currently raising one kid and several houseplants. If I write it, I mean it.
Got a question that isn’t covered here?
If it’s the kind of question you’d ask at midnight when nobody else is awake — love, work, the weird dreams — that’s exactly what I built Elementually for. No scripts, no judgment, just answers.

The Secret Life of Night Owl Moms

    Me Time, At Last!

You see, when you’re a night owl, you get to experience the best parts of parenting – minus the actual kids.

The House is Mine, All Mine!

But the real beauty of being a night owl as a mom is getting to see the house in a whole new light. It’s like being in a secret club where the house is only yours for a few precious hours.

And let’s be real, there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of a tidy house before the sunrise. I mean, who needs daylight to see a clean house, right?

And remember, even if the night may seem long, it will soon be morning and we can share our night owl wisdom with other moms out there and laugh about it!

    The Snacking Delight

Also, let’s not forget the best part about being a night owl, the snacking. You know, the one guilty pleasure we all have but feel guilty about.

But not as a night owl mom, no sir! We get to indulge in all the snacks we want without anyone judging us for it.

    The Magic of the Night

What’s even better, being a night owl mom, we get to experience the true magic of the night, like the silence that comes with the darkness, a sensation that many of us never get to experience during the day.

Plus, who needs a social life when you’ve got a never-ending list of to-dos and a full fridge of snacks?

    The Final Thought

So, to all the night owl moms out there, embrace your love for the night. It may seem tough at times, but trust me, it’s worth it.

  • Dear Dads: Why Helping with Household Chores is Essential for Building Strong Families

Dear Dads: Why Helping with Household Chores is Essential for Building Strong Families

Dads, when it comes to household chores, we know many of you may feel like they are not your responsibility.

But the truth is, helping with household chores is essential for building strong and healthy families. Not only does it make the workload more manageable for moms, but it also teaches children valuable life skills and sets a positive example for them.

    dads helping with chores

When dads take on an active role in household chores, it helps to break down gender stereotypes and teaches children that household responsibilities are not just the responsibility of one gender.

It shows them that everyone has a role to play in keeping a household running smoothly.

Moreover, helping with household chores can also improve communication and teamwork within families. When you take on more responsibilities around the house, it allows you to better understand the daily tasks and challenges that your partner faces, and opens up opportunities for discussing ways to make those tasks easier or more efficient.

By working together as a team, you can create a more harmonious home environment.

Not only that, but by helping with household chores, you will have more opportunities to bond with your kids. It can be as simple as cooking dinner together, or doing laundry as a family.

These seemingly mundane tasks can provide valuable time to connect and create memories.

It’s important to note that when we talk about dads helping with household chores, we don’t mean that moms should not also help with tasks traditionally associated with dads, like car repairs or yard work. Both parents should take on a variety of tasks and responsibilities based on their strengths, preferences, and availability.

We know that many dads work long hours and are exhausted by the time they get home. But remember, it’s not about being perfect, it’s about being willing to try. Even small efforts, like loading the dishwasher after dinner or doing a load of laundry, can make a big difference. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to ask for help or to discuss a more equitable division of labor with your partner.

In conclusion, helping with household chores is not just a task to be completed, but an opportunity to strengthen the bonds of your family.

It shows your children that you are an active and engaged parent, and it helps to create a more harmonious home environment. So next time you’re at home and see a chore that needs to be done, roll up your sleeves and jump in. Your family will thank you.

  • Unlock Love’s Secret Tradition: Give a Penny on Valentine’s Day

Unlock Love’s Secret Tradition: Give a Penny on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a time for love, flowers, chocolates, and cards, but have you ever heard of the tradition of giving “lucky pennies” on this holiday of love?

The practice of giving a “lucky penny” as a Valentine’s Day gift dates back to the 19th century. It was believed that giving a penny to your loved one on Valentine’s Day would bring them good luck and prosperity.

    Penny For Valentine's Day

The penny would be wrapped in a special message or poem, and it was thought that the more original the message, the more luck it would bring.

Today, the tradition of giving a “lucky penny” has largely fallen out of practice, but it is still remembered by some as a quirky and nostalgic way to show love and appreciation on Valentine’s Day.

So next time you’re looking for a unique and meaningful gift, consider giving a “lucky penny” and make it a tradition in your relationship.

It may seem strange and quaint by today’s standards, but it’s a reminder that Valentine’s Day has been celebrated in many ways throughout history and many cultures, and it is a nice way to show a person that you care for them.

  • Why Potty Training is the Actual Worst: A Parent’s Confession

Why Potty Training is the Actual Worst: A Parent’s Confession

Raising a child is a beautiful, joyous experience, but let’s be real here, some aspects of it are just plain hard. And among all the challenging stages of parenting, potty training might just be the absolute worst. I know, I know, you’re thinking, “But it’s such a small thing. How bad can it be?”

    Potty Training Is The Worst

Oh, my dear friends, let me tell you.

First of all, there’s the constant worry. Are they ready? Are they showing signs of readiness? Are we doing this right? Are we setting them up for success or failure?

The stress of it all is enough to drive a parent insane. And then, once you finally decide to take the plunge and start potty training, it’s like you’ve entered some sort of never-ending loop of dirty underwear, accidents, and bargaining with a toddler who just doesn’t seem to understand the concept.

And don’t even get me started on the public bathroom situation. Trying to maneuver a squirmy, uncooperative child onto a strange, public toilet is a special kind of nightmare.

The looks of judgment from other parents and strangers alike as you try to explain to your child why they need to “go potty now” are enough to make you want to crawl into a hole and hide.

But the worst part, the absolute worst part, is the emotional toll it takes on you as a parent. The constant reminders of “I need to go potty” when you’re already stretched thin and running on empty, the feeling of defeat when yet another pair of underwear gets tossed into the laundry pile, and the guilt that maybe, just maybe, you’re screwing your child up for life because they aren’t potty trained at exactly the same time as all their peers.

But here’s the thing, in the grand scheme of things, potty training is a small and fleeting stage of parenting. And one day, in the not-so-distant future, you’ll look back on this time and chuckle at the memories (or try to forget them altogether).

So, to all the parents out there currently in the thick of it, hang in there, you got this. And to those yet to embark on this particular parenting woe, good luck, you’re gonna need it.

You’ll Soon Be Able to See This Green Comet in The Sky and It Won’t Happen Again for 50,000 Years

If space and comets are your thing, you are going to love this…

Discovered in March of last year by astronomers at the Palomar Observatory in San Diego County, California, this comet will soon make its closest approach to the sun this month, according to NASA.

    Courtesy of @particle_science

Named the C/2022 E3 (ZTF) comet, this particular comet acquires a long journey to pass by Earth because it orbits around the sun and passes through the outer reaches of the solar system, according to The Planetary Society.

In fact, according to the Planetary Society,  this particular comet takes around 50,000 years to orbit the Sun, so an opportunity to see it will only come once in a lifetime.

    Courtesy of @belneus

The bright green comet which has only strengthened in color as it gets closer to the sun will also make its closest pass by Earth between the first two days of February according to EarthSky.

    Courtesy of @timmytoskas

Stargazers should be able to view the green comet in the evening near the North Star according to EarthSky.

    Courtesy of @kiew_aspirin_n

Observers on the Northern Hemisphere should point their telescope or binoculars low on the northeastern horizon just before the clock strikes midnight to catch the celestial event on January 12.

Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) should also be visible (with binoculars) for those on the Northern Hemisphere during the morning time most of this month, while individuals in the Southern Hemisphere can count on spotting the green comet in early February, according to NASA.

And depending on how bright the comet becomes, you may even be able to see C/2022 E3 with the naked eye towards the end of January at night.

And keep in mind that you’ll know you have spotted the green comet when you notice its streaking tail of dust, energized particles and of course, the glowing green color that will surround the comet!
