Category: Heavy Handed Advice

Heavy Handed Advice is exactly what it sounds like — opinions you didn’t ask for but probably need. This is the corner of the internet where I tell you what I’d tell my best friend, which is sometimes “you’re right” and sometimes “you’re being ridiculous.”
What kind of advice is on TTB?
Life stuff. Money stuff. Relationship stuff. Parenting stuff. The kind of advice that doesn’t come with a 17-step plan or a $99 download. Just honest takes from someone who’s made every mistake worth making and lived to write about it.
Who writes the advice posts?
I do. — blogger since the AOL days, currently raising one kid and several houseplants. If I write it, I mean it.
Got a question that isn’t covered here?
If it’s the kind of question you’d ask at midnight when nobody else is awake — love, work, the weird dreams — that’s exactly what I built Elementually for. No scripts, no judgment, just answers.

Dr. Pepper Peeps Exist And You Have To Try It

Peeps just unveiled a new flavor that we never knew we needed, and it’s actually good!!

It seems like we can’t get away from those bright, animal shaped marshmallows.

They used to be an Easter delicacy, but the Peeps were front and center in my kids stockings this year.

In fact, you can get Peeps in things like Soda, Ice Cream, and even Nail Polish — the latter of which was a must-have for my teenage daughter.

    Peeps and Company

Every now and then, Peeps will release a flavor that we simply can’t resist checking out.

When they dropped Donut Shop flavor and Cotton Candy Peeps, I’ll admit, I threw them in my shopping cart just for funzies.

    Peeps

Now, Peeps has teamed up with my favorite soda to bring us a brand new flavor.

    Dr. Pepper Peeps!

I mean, we already knew that Peeps and Pepsi were bringing us a flavor hybrid, expected sometime in February.

But, we never expected a Dr. Pepper X Peeps collab!

Now, these have been found at Walmart, but we aren’t yet sure if they are exclusive.

Have you tried them? Let us know where you got them!

  • Starbucks Is Changing Their Rewards Program And It’s Going To Cost More Stars For Free Stuff

Starbucks Is Changing Their Rewards Program And It’s Going To Cost More Stars For Free Stuff

I use the heck out of my Starbucks Rewards App.

    Starbucks App

It’s really amazing how quick those stars add up when you hit up Starbucks twice a day. LOL!

    Starbucks

BUT, it’s about to get just a bit more difficult to rack up those rewards stars.

    Boooo!

Starbucks is changing up their rewards program, and it might mean spending a bit more $$ to earn your way to free stuff.

Here Are The Details Of The Starbucks Rewards Program

So, you will still be able to earn stars towards free Starbucks. That’s the good thing.

You will get one star for every $1 you spend.

Bump that up to two stars for every $1 you spend on a pre-loaded Starbucks gift card.

The number of stars needed for free stuff is changing up, so pay attention.

HOT coffee, HOT tea, and some of the baked goods, which were originally 50 stars, will now require 100 stars to get them for free.

BUT, you can now also get Iced Coffee or Iced Tea for 100 stars. They used to require 150 stars, so yay!

That 100-star tier will also now earn you a few of their packaged goodies, ham and cheese croissants, and some of their plastic to-go cups.

Here’s the part that hurts my heart.

Cold brews, lattes, and all other “handcrafted drinks,” which currently cost you 150 stars, will now require 200 stars.

If you have a craving for one of their lunch sandwiches or salads, you will have to drop 300 stars.

HOWEVER, you can also spend 300 stars to get one of their pre-packaged coffees.

Starbucks merch will still be available at 400 stars, which is the current rate of exchange.

Another thing that will remain unchanged is the 25-star tier.

Customers will still be able to add an espresso shot, flavored syrup, or alternative milk to any drink for 25 stars.

According to Business Insider, these changes to the Starbucks Rewards system will take effect on February 13th.

  • Kim Kardashian Admits ‘It’s Really F—ing Hard’ To Co-Parent With Kanye West

Kim Kardashian Admits ‘It’s Really F—ing Hard’ To Co-Parent With Kanye West

Co-parenting is hard enough all on its own, but try doing it under the scrutiny of the microscope that is the public eye.

To make it even harder, try doing it with Kanye “Ye” West.

    Ugh, right?

That is exactly the waters that Kim Kardashian is having to traverse, and she says it’s hella hard.

    Co-parenting is really f—ing hard.

    Angie Martinez IRL

In a recent sit down with Angie Martinez on her Angie Martinez IRL podcast, she discussed the difficulties of trying to keep a brave face in front of her kids while co-parenting with Kanye.

    Angie Martinez IRL

If we are riding to school, and they want to listen to their dad’s music — no matter what we are going through — I have to have that smile on my face and blast his music and sing along with my kids. [I can] act like nothing is wrong and as soon as I drop them off, I can have a good cry,

    Kim Kardashian

With their divorce finally officially done in November of 2022, Kim is having to learn how to cope with the decree of the co-parenting issue.

I definitely protected [Kanye] — and I still will in the eyes of my kids. For my kids. So, in my home, my kids don’t know anything that goes on [in] the outside world.

    Kim Kardashian
    Angie Martinez IRL

The divorce papers say that Kim and Kanye will have joint custody — both physical and legal — of their four kids.

Kanye also has to pay Kim $200,000 a month in child support. (I choked just a little bit just now)

That’s a hefty chunk of change, but it’s almost worth it for everything that Kim has to go through because of the divorce.

If [the kids] don’t know things that are being said, why would I ever bring that energy to them? That is real, heavy, grownup s— that they are not ready to deal with. — When they are, we will have those conversations. One day, my kids will thank me for not sitting here and bashing their dad. I could.

    Kim Kardashian

Kim also got real about divorce, keeping her kids safe from the media, and how her dad shaped the way she parents her own kids.

I had the best dad, and I had the best memories and the greatest experience and that’s all I want for my kids — that’s what I would want for them.

  • This Man’s Photos Prove No Two Snowflakes Are The Same And It Is Mesmerizing

This Man’s Photos Prove No Two Snowflakes Are The Same And It Is Mesmerizing

We’ve always been taught that no two snowflakes are alike.

And, turns out, there’s photographic proof that no two flakes are, in fact, exactly the same.

Millions and billions of the feathery light flakes of snow float down from the sky — and each one of them is entirely different.

Kind of blows your mind, doesn’t it?!?

The man who first discovered this awesome snowflake phenomenon did so WAY back in 1885, when he became the first person to successfully photograph individual flakes.

Wilson Bentley, a farmer from Jericho, Vermont, rigged up a microscope on his camera, and was able to capture these “snow flowers” on film.

It took him 3 years to get his special microscope camera correct, but when he did, a whole new world opened up.

Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty; and it seemed a shame that this beauty should not be seen and appreciated by others.

    Wilson Bentley

    And, they are spectacular!

Something pretty cool that you might notice is that ALL the flakes have 6 sides. It’s the way water molecules form each and every time.

Every crystal was a masterpiece of design, and no one design was ever repeated. When a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost. Just that much beauty was gone, without leaving any record behind.

    Wilson Bentley

Mr. Bentley became known as “Snowflake” Bentley, because of his work with the snowflakes.

His photographs can now be seen at the historic Old Red Mill in Jericho, Vermont.

Not only are his photos found in Jericho, some of them are even a part of the Smithsonian Institution Archives.

  • Here’s How You Can Watch A 3-Hour Version Of The ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Shirtless Football Scene

Here’s How You Can Watch A 3-Hour Version Of The ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Shirtless Football Scene

Sure, I was a fan of Top Gun: Maverick.

    Paramount Pictures

The dare devil flying, the reunion of Maverick and Iceman, getting to know Goose’s son — the dudes on the beach shirtless and sweaty.

Thanks to a little Christmas present from Paramount+, we can now watch a 3-hour loop of that football, sweaty shirtless aviators, fun on the beach scene, and I love it.

Top Gun: Maverick just dropped onto Paramount+ — and you best bet I was first in line to stream it.

    Paramount Pictures

To celebrate the addition of the Top Gun sequel to their lineup, they dropped a little bonus material for us all to enjoy.

    Paramount Pictures

That bonus material comes in the form of a video that stretches out just over the 3-hour mark, and it’s glorious.

    Paramount Pictures

Perhaps the best part (okay, there were a LOT of best parts) of the film was when the aviators took that break from work to do a little bonding on the beach.

    Paramount Pictures

Shirtless on the beach. With more beautiful sweaty muscles than I will ever see IRL.

I just have the video streaming in the background while I go about my business of cleaning the house and working. LOL!

    Paramount Pictures

If you haven’t yet had a chance to catch Top Gun: Maverick, you MUST get on that ride now.

    Paramount Pictures

You can catch Top Gun: Maverick, the film on Paramount+.

  • Krispy Kreme Says Robots Will Be Frosting and Filling Doughnuts Very Soon

Krispy Kreme Says Robots Will Be Frosting and Filling Doughnuts Very Soon

Robots are taking over Krispy Kreme.

    Courtesy of @krispykreme

The famous donut chain recently announced that robots will begin filling, frosting, and even decorating their delectable donuts soon, to cut time in the doughnut production line.

    Courtesy of @krispykreme

“Probably within the next 18 months, you’ll see some automation starting to go into the frosting, the filling, the sprinkles, and even the packaging,” Krispy Kreme CEO Mike Tattersfield explained to Yahoo Finance Live.

    Mike Tattersfield
    Courtesy of @krispykreme

Krispy Kreme’s incentive to “hire” robots is an effort to maximize the fresh hub and spoke model opportunity in the U.S., as well as increasing the access for delivering fresh donuts daily.

    Courtesy of @krispykreme

“We’ve got some pretty big factory stores…we do 12,000 points of access today, which get fresh doughnuts globally,” Tattersfield mentioned. “You need to start looking at what the automation capacity of that is because it is going to the grocers. It is going to the convenience shops.”

    Mike Tattersfield
    Courtesy of @krispykreme

Within the next 18 months, Krispy Kreme’s robots are likely to make 18% of the donut chain’s doughnuts which are expected to bring in $2 million worth of annual savings from a $6 million investment.

    Courtesy of @krispykreme

J.P. Morgan Analyst John Ivankoe says that the popular donut shop shells out more than $100 million on doughnut production labor in the United States and “$60 million is related to post-production labor that includes inline icing, inline filling and traying/boxing functions which can be automated.”

    Courtesy of @krispykreme

However, despite the donut making robots, Tattersfield made an important note to say that Krispy Kreme employees will still be at the core of their donut shops with also the intention of omitting tedious tasks.

    Courtesy of @krispykreme

“We still are going to continue to drive the experience side with our Krispy Kremers and Insomniacs, so I always find that when companies do a great job, they’re balanced in how they try to do that and you try to get the repetitive task out of the business,” he stated.

    Mike Tattersfield
    Courtesy of @krispykreme

He also mentioned that the ability for someone to grow as an employee is what sets them apart from the rest.

    Courtesy of @krispykreme

“It’s really about the growth opportunity,” he explained. “When you’re in a company of our size that even, today, it’s still just 400+ producing doughnut shops with a long trajectory of growth … that growth across country becomes a very attractive proposition. I love to see that our doughnut shop managers are now owners.”

  • You Can Recycle Your Old or Broken Christmas Lights at Home Depot. Here’s How.

You Can Recycle Your Old or Broken Christmas Lights at Home Depot. Here’s How.

I’m not going to lie, I cringe at how much “stuff” we just throw away.

Take Christmas lights for example, I swear we are replacing several strands every single year and that is so much waste. UGH.

Well, if you happen to feel the same, I have some good news!!

You can actually recycle your old or broken Christmas lights at Home Depot. Here’s how…

How to Recycle Christmas Lights at Home Depot

Many hardware stores such as Home Depot and Ace Hardware have bins inside their store where you can dispose of Christmas lights for recycling.

The best thing to do is, call up your local Home Depot and ask where they keep their recycling light bin.

Each location may have specifics regarding what they accept, so it’s worth calling them ahead of time before hauling Christmas lights into your local store.

I am all for this so we can hopefully keep items like these out of the landfills.
