That premise should be a five-minute bit. Somehow it became a whole show with actual stakes.

Hulu’s season 2 description says Chad is a star on the field, but his behavior off the field has Coach Hudson and Gerry suspicious. Ricky knows the truth, and Russ and Danny need her help if Chad is going to survive the regular season and get the Catfish anywhere near the College Football Playoff.
Which is exactly where this story needed to go. The funniest part of Chad Powers was never just “look at this guy in a terrible disguise.” It was watching Russ build a whole second life and then realizing that every good thing happening to Chad makes Russ’s original lie harder to escape.
Why does the fake mustache premise work this well?
The disguise is so bad it is perfect. The joke is not that Chad Powers is some masterclass in undercover work. The joke is that people accept him anyway.
There is something genuinely funny and a little sad about that. Russ wants a do-over so badly that he becomes someone else entirely, and the new version of him starts getting the opportunities the old version destroyed.
That is a much better engine for a show than “football guy wears fake face.” The football is the setting. The ego, desperation and consequences are the actual story.
Who is back for Chad Powers season 2?
Glen Powell returns as Russ Holliday/Chad Powers. Hulu also lists Perry Mattfeld as Ricky, Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd, Wynn Everett as Tricia Yeager, Frankie A. Rodriguez as Danny and Steve Zahn as Coach Jake Hudson.
That matters because season 2 is not a reset. It is the next part of the same increasingly complicated lie, so the relationships from season 1 are doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
Should you watch season 1 before season 2?
Yes. Absolutely.
This is not one of those shows where you can read a three-sentence recap and basically understand everything. Season 1 establishes why Russ created Chad, who knows what, who suspects what, and why the disguise is becoming less of a joke and more of a problem.
