Día de Muertos is one of those celebrations that gets flattened into “skulls and flowers” online when the actual meaning is so much bigger.
So this is our living Día de Muertos 2026 guide — the page I’m going to keep updating with the dates, traditions, current events, new collections, beautiful finds, and the Totally The Bomb stories that actually belong together.
If you searched for Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, you’re in the right place too.
First: the beautiful stuff
This holiday is visually incredible, and the 2026 collections are already proving it. We’re keeping the consumer side of this page separate from the cultural meaning below, because a gorgeous cup or collector doll is fun — but it is not the whole tradition.
Stanley’s Papel Picado collection
Stanley released a 2026 Día de Muertos collection featuring artwork by Mexican-American artist Guadalupe Hernandez, with Salt Papel Picado and Marigold Papel Picado designs.
The smallest cup starts at $35, and the collection includes an Everyday Tumbler plus two Quencher ProTour sizes. We broke down the sizes, prices and lid differences in our Stanley Día de Muertos guide.
Barbie and Ken are both ridiculously beautiful this year
Mattel’s 2026 Día de Muertos Barbie wears a deep-red satin mermaid gown with embroidery inspired by traditional Mexican pottery, plus a removable sugar-skull-inspired mask. Mattel lists the collectible at $81 and credits doll designer Edna Vogel-Amezcua and packaging designer Charis Ceniseroz.
The matching 2026 Ken doll is also $81, with a deep-red jacquard coat, skeleton-print shirt and pants, skull-style mask and a removable top hat with a red rose.
And Mattel went way beyond the dolls. Its current Día de Muertos collection also includes totes, clear glasses, mugs, posters, sweatshirts and tees.
Disney’s Plaza de la Familia is back
Disney California Adventure’s Plaza de la Familia runs from August 21 through November 2, 2026. Disney describes the annual event as a celebration of the everlasting bonds of family and the spirit of Día de los Muertos, inspired by Pixar’s Coco.
That whole thing deserves its own TTB rabbit hole, and we’ll keep feeding the best Disney finds back into this page.
When is Día de Muertos in 2026?
The celebration is most closely associated with November 1 and November 2, though traditions and observances can begin in late October and vary by community.
UNESCO describes the Indigenous festivity as an annual period at the end of October and beginning of November that honors the temporary return of deceased relatives and loved ones.
This is also why lumping Día de Muertos into “Mexican Halloween” misses the point. Día de Muertos centers remembrance, family, ancestors, community and continuing bonds with people who have died.
What is an ofrenda?
An ofrenda is an offering or altar created to honor someone who has died. There is no single universal checklist because practices differ by family, region and community, but common elements can include photographs, candles, flowers, favorite foods and meaningful personal objects.
Marigolds — cempasúchil — are especially associated with Día de Muertos. Papel picado, candles, food and paths of flower petals also appear in traditional observances described by UNESCO.
The important part is that an ofrenda is not random “spooky décor.” The objects are there because they carry memory and meaning.
Colorado Springs has a whole Día de Muertos season this year
This part is especially useful for me because the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center is not doing one tiny event and calling it done.
The FAC’s 2026 Día de Muertos programming includes The Bones of Tradition: The Many Lives of the Day of the Dead on October 23, a paper marigold workshop and an Art, Memory & Making program with artist Cal Duran on October 24, a tequila tasting and food pairing on October 28, and the main community celebration on November 1 and November 2.

The main celebration is free and open to the public. The FAC says it will include a community ofrenda, live music and performances, art activities, ofrendas from local schools and community groups, food, artisans and children’s costume parades.
If you’re local, bookmark the Fine Arts Center’s Día de Muertos page because individual times, performances and registration details live there.
A quick note about celebrating respectfully
You do not have to turn this into an anxiety spiral where you are afraid to learn anything.
Just start by remembering that Día de Muertos is a living cultural and family tradition, not an aesthetic that exists because colorful skulls look good in an October display.
Learn what the symbols mean. Credit artists. Support Mexican and Latino creators and businesses when you can. If you are invited into a community celebration, follow the people hosting it. And if you make an ofrenda, build it around remembrance rather than trying to make it look Pinterest-perfect.
